About CAPS-I

• national non-profit association with a voluntary membership of 130 public

school districts/boards/divisions

• formally incorporated in 2008 to establish standards for the K-12 public

school sector of the industry, advocate for the interests of our members,

provide professional development and promote Canadian public schools

abroad

• members must comply with CAPS-I’s Standards of Practice in 5 areas:

Our members

• are publicly (government) funded educating students in urban, suburban

and rural communities across all 10 provinces

• offer educational programs in English or French with bilingual experiences

available in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick

• enroll over 32,000 international students in 1 semester or full academic

year programs and over 8,000 in shorter term programs in 2016-2017

• enroll international students in over 1,100 high schools and 1,500

elementary and middle schools each year with the majority beginning their

studies in Grade 10 or 11

K-12 Education in Canada

• Kindergarten (5 years) – Grade 11 (in Quebec) or Grade 12 (17/18 years)

• School year starts in September and ends in June

• Students can begin in September or at the start of 2nd semester in February

• Break over Christmas/New Year (2 weeks) and in the Spring (1-2 weeks)

• Linear (8-10 courses all year) vs. semester (4-5 courses each semester)

• 6 hour school day is typical but start and end times vary

• Canada ranked 2nd on the Reading Scale with Ireland in 4th, New Zealand 9th,

Australia 13th, UK ranked 18th and US ranked 19th

• Canada ranked 7th on the Science Scale with New Zealand in 12th, Australia

13th, UK 14th, Ireland 16th and the US 20th.

• Canada ranked 10th on the Math Scale with Ireland 16th, New Zealand 20th,

• Trade missions with members offered annually around the globe

• Provide content for websites, etc. re: education system in Canada, statistics.

Student &Educational AgentProtection

eCAP™ assures that every student registered at a

Languages Canada member program will be able to

complete his or her studies. In case of school closure,

students are transferred into a member program at no

additional cost.

Education Completion Assurance Program™ (

eCAP™)

Developed as a complement to eCAP™ in case a

placement under eCAP™ is not possible. Funds from

SEAF would be used to reimburse students who cannot

complete their studies due to circumstances beyond

their control.

Student Education Assurance Fund (SEAF)

All Languages Canada members are committed to student protection. We provide safeguards to protect the investment of our international students as well as our agency partners.

• Pathway agreements between high schools and post-secondary institutions can
