Youll notice that the Buyers Guide is divided into six sections, separated by divider tabs.

Each section begins with an alphabetical list of com-panies, including their address and a description of their business. That is followed by a product index, in some cases, broken down into sub-sections.

In most cases, it will be self-evident what section to look in. But there are a few product categories that fall into a grey area. Heres where youll find them:

The Buyers Guide matters heres why

A s I write these words in mid-November 2010, the U.S. recession has officially been over for almost two months at least according to the National Bureau of Economic Research. With so much of our economy tied into that of our neighbor to the south, this should be good news for Canadians.

But the announcement will probably do little to appease the manufacturing sector, either in Canada or the U.S. And for good reason. Weak economic data from the past few months continue to stoke fears of a double-dip recession.

Double-dip or not, two things are clear: First, Canadas plastic manufacturing sector will continue to face some real challenges in 2011; second, manufacturing in general will have to play a large role in kick-starting the recov-ery, whenever it happens.

On what do I base this last statement? After all, the idea that manufacturing still matters strikes a lot of people as silly. In an article published in Harpers Magazine in January 2010, U.S. economic researcher Alan Tonelson summed up the anti-manufacturing argument nicely. For decades, Americas economics and business elites have been confidently assuring their countrymen that the alarming decline of the U.S. manufacturing sector was nothing to worry about, he wrote. They claimed the demise of manufacturing simply heralded the rise of alternatives bet-ter suited to modern circumstances chiefly, the spectacular progress of information technologies and the impres-sive advances in the psychology and mathematics of finance.

But that was then, before North Americas production-light economic expansion officially collapsed into the most sustained economic downturn since World War II. Today, the idea of maintaining genuine prosperity without a vibrant manufacturing sector stands exposed as a fairy tale, Tonelson wrote. Business leaders are beginning to understand that real, self-sustaining recovery and prosperity require a manufacturing base that is not only highly productive and innovative but is a much larger share of gross domestic product.

In other words, economic prosperity comes from making things. Its a fact to keep firmly in mind during the tough months, and possibly years, to come. And its just one reason why the 2011 Canadian Plastics Buyers Guide is such an invaluable tool. If youre making things from plastic, chances are youre going to have to get in touch with other Canadian plastics companies or equipment suppliers. And if youre selling equipment to Canadi-an plastics processors, youre definitely going to need that contact info. To help you figure out who to call and who not to call which business cards to keep, which to throw out; which coordinates to update in your BlackBerry weve streamlined our own information gathering. Companies that havent responded to us in three years have been dropped from the Buyers Guide (sorry, but dont say we didnt warn you!), and a number of startup compa-nies are making first time appearances.

You might also notice that weve fine-tuned our popular list of industry acronyms, and updated our list of indus-try associations. And if youre working with a limited travel budget and want to decide which events are worth your time and money, no problem consult our event calendar on page six.
