Relative Location• One location in relation to (or compared) to
another location.• More easily determined by using compass
references.• Relative location can change depending on
what a location is in relation or compared to.• Example:
– Badger is WEST of Gander.– Badger is EAST of Springdale.– St. John’s is 424 Km EAST of Grand Falls-Windsor– Yukon is NORTH of British Columbia
Lines of Latitude• Also called “Parallels”• Parallel, horizontal lines on globe.• Determine location/position North or
South (of the equator). • Go from Equator (0o lat.) to North Pole
(90o North Latitude) and South Pole (90o South Latitude)
• Increase by increments of 10o
• Equator is the MOST prominent.• Equator divides world into Northern and
Southern Hemispheres.
Lines of Longitude• Also called “Meridians”• Vertical lines that go from Pole to Pole on
globe.• Determine location/position East or West (of the
Prime Meridian). • Prime Meridian is 0o at Greenwich, England.• Meridians go from 0o to 180o West and 0o to
180o East.• The Prime Meridian divides world into Eastern
and Western Hemispheres.
* Greenwich, England
* Greenwich, England
Absolute Location• Location as defined by a set of points or
coordinates.• Latitude and longitude!!• Absolute location does not change!!• Badger is located at 49o North latitude
and 56o West longitude….
