It's easy. The board has 8 filesand 8 ranks. Files are the rowsof squares that go up and down. Each one is named by a smallletter. Ranks are rows that gosideways. Each one is namedby a number.Every square also has a name.

The first part is its file and thesecond part is its rank. In thisdiagram, a white pawn movedto e4 and a black pawn to e5.

When moves are written down, the first capital letter shows thepiece which moves. Q is queen.B is bishop. R is rook. N is usedfor knight because the king is K.If there is no capital letter, thatmeans a pawn moves.

Next is the square that thepiece moves to. Bc4 says that abishop moves to the square c4.When a piece is captured, an xis put before the square. Qxf7means a queen takes on f7.

If a pawn captures, the letterof the file it starts on is givenfirst, then an x followed by thesquare it takes on. exd5 says apawn on the e-file captures onthe square d5.

When two pieces of the samekind can go to the same spot, another letter is put after thepiece to show what file it camefrom. Rae1 tells us that a rookon the a-file moves to e1.

If the pieces that can move tothe same spot are on the samefile, then their rank number isadded. N6e4 means the knighton the 6th rank moves to e4.

Rooks and bishops work great together. The diagonalpower of a bishop combines perfectly with a rook’s actionon the ranks and files.

A rook and bishop can cooperate in different ways tocheckmate a king. That’s the topic of this class.

Diagram #1 shows how a bishop can assist with a backrank mate even when the opponent has made an escapesquare for the king. 1.Re8+! Rxe8 2.Rxe8# is matebecause the bishop covers the h7 square.

A similar kind of mate can happen on a side file. Whitewins in diagram #2 by 1.Ng6+! hxg6 2.Rh3#. The bishopat c4 controls g8 and the rook takes care of business onthe h-file. Be careful! 1.Nf7+? Rxf7 2.Bxf7 Rd1+!

There are several cool R & B mates on the back rankwhen the opponent has advanced their g-pawn.

Example #3 is easy to figure out, if you have the habitof looking for queen sacrifices. 1.Qxd8+! Nxd8 2.Re8#.This time, the bishop stops the king from going to g7.

Position #4 is a little trickier. The black king has twoescape squares (g7 and h7) but that still isn’t enough.1.Qe8+! Rxe8 (1...Kh7 2.Qxf7#) 2.Rxe8+ Kh7 3.Rh8#. Thebishop covers g7 and protects the rook on h8.

A bishop can also command the g7square from h6. That’s a good clue onhow to find the mate in diagram #5.1.Qxf8+! Kxf8 2.Bh6+ Kg8 3.Re8#. (1.Bh6? Rc8 2.Qf6 Qd4! is fine for Black.)

Double checks are an extremely powerful tactic. Theonly way to get out of a double check is by moving theking. If the king has no moves, it’s checkmate.

In position #6, White sacrifices their queen to decoythe black king onto the same diagonal as their bishop.1.Qg8+! Kxg8. Then the rook moves to uncover checkfrom the bishop. 2.Rd8#. Double check and mate.

In example #7, it’s the bishop that moves to uncover therook check. First a knight is given up to open the e-file.1.Nf6+! exf6 2.Bc6#.

The two R & B mates shown above are very similar. In the Morphy mate (diagram #8), the bishop gives thefinal check against a king in the corner. It is named forNew Orleans master Paul Morphy, who won an importantgame with this pattern in 1857.

In the Pillsbury mate (diagram #9), it is the rook thatgives the final check. Harry Pillsbury, from Boston, wasone of the world’s leading players in the late 1800’s.

The real difference between a Morphy and Pillsburymate is the typical sacrifice that precedes them. Theseare shown in example #10.

Black to move wins with 1...Rxc3! If White recaptures,Black has a Morphy mate. 2.bxc3? Rb8+ 3.Ka1 Bxc3#.

However, if White goes first, we get a Pillsbury mate.1.Rxg7+ Kh8 2.Rg8+! Thisdouble check seals the deal. 2...Kxg8 3.Rg1#.

That’s all for this lesson.Good luck in your games.See you next time!

Many combos are based on pins. A piece is pinnedwhen it is attacked and can not move because theking or another valuable piece is behind it.

In this diagram, White to play uses the fork 1.Nc7!to clear the d5 square for a pin. After 1...Bxc7 2.Bd5,the black queen is lost. (1...Qe7 2.Qd5+ Kh8 3.Nxa8)

Black to play uses the pin 1...Bc5 to decoy thewhite queen into a fork. 2.Qxc5 Nd3+! 3.Kg1 Nxc5

you have to figure outwhich kind of promotedpiece can get throughthe maze fastest. Is it aknight, or a bishop, or arook? Good luck!

solutions page 46

PAWN MAZES Only the white pawn moves. When it reaches the last rank,it may become a rook, bishop, or knight. But not a queen. After the promotion, only the promoted piece moves. Findthe shortest path to capture the black king, without takingany pieces or moving to a square that is attacked by ablack piece. It is possible to go through the maze with arook, bishop, or knight. Figure out which piece has theshortest path, which the longest, and which the middlest!

It was Saturday afternoon and the pawns were over atLily’s house. Kiril, Moe, Larry, Frizoon, and Lily were allstanding in her backyard, wondering what to do with thebeautiful snow that surrounded them.

Then Lily came up with an idea. “Let’s have a snowballfight! Kiril and Moe can be on one team, and Larry andFrizoon will be on the other.”

“But how about you, Lily?”, Kiril asked. “Which team willyou be on?”

“Well, Kiril, I think two against two will be more fair.I’m going inside to make you guys some hot chocolate. And whoever wins gets an extra marshmallow!”

It seemed like a good plan. So Lily went in the houseand the other pawns started building their snow forts.Suddenly, they heard a noise by the trees at the back ofthe yard.

Can you imagine their surprise? There, right in front oftheir eyes, stood two deer.

Before the pawns could say anything, the deer walkedover and introduced themselves.

“Hi, everyone, my name is Bucky, and this is my sisterJane. We’re looking for something to eat. Do you knowwhere we can find any food?”

Kiril was the first to answer. “Hello, Bucky. I’m Kiril thePawn. These are my pals: Frizoon, Moe, and Larry. Myother friend Lily is in the house. I’m sure she has somecookies you could have.”

Then Moe shouted, “Hey, I want a cookie too! Let’s goask Lily.”

Frizoon agreed. “Excellent idea, Moe. And maybe thathot chocolate is ready by now.”

So they all went inside and sat down at the kitchentable. When Kiril introduced the deer to Lily, she smiledand said, “Oh dear, I hope I have enough hot chocolatefor everybody.”

Luckily, she did. It was hot chocolate and cookies allaround. And extra marshmallows for Bucky and Jane.

“Mmmm, these are good!”

Lily was the perfect hostess. She made them all feelat home. Of course, you know what happened next. Shesaid, “Hey, does anybody want to play chess?”

The deer’s ears perked up when they heard that. “Sure,we love chess!”

There were only two chess sets in the house, so theydecided that Jane would play Lily, and Bucky would playMoe. The other pawns were happy to be spectators, especially Kiril. This was going to be fun to watch.
