• Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada, was selected to host the 2010 Winter Olympics on July 2, 2003.

Ice Hockey

• Canada’s women’s hockey team beat the U.S. women’s team on February 25 to win the gold medal.

• Canada’s men’s team, although losing to the U.S., managed to fight its way back to the finals, where they beat the U.S. 2-3 in overtime to win the gold.

• Canada’s luge team consisted of 10 athletes, six individuals and two double teams.

Nordic Combined

• Men’s team: Charles Hamelin won gold in the 500m, Francois-Louis Tremblay won bronze in the 500m, and Charles Hamelin, Francois Hamelin, Oliver Jean, Francois-Louis Tremblay, and Guillaume Bastille won gold in the 5000m relay.

• Women’s team: Marianne St-Gelais won silver in the 500m, and Kalyna Roberge, Jessica Gregg, Marianne St-Gelais, and Tania Vincent won silver in 3000m relay.

Speed Skating

• Canada’s men’s speed skating failed to win a medal.

• Canada’s women’s speed skating team did much better, with Kristina Groves winning silver in the 1500m and a bronze in the 3000m, Clara Hughes winning bronze in the 5000m, and Christine Nesbitt winning gold in the 1000m.

• Mathieu Giroux, Lucas Makowsky, and Denny Morrison won gold in men’s tesam pursuit.
