The Benefits of ReadingThe Benefits of Reading

    The BibleThe Bible

W ithout question, the Bible is the greatest book ever written. In it God Himself speaks to us. It is a book of divine instruction, comfort in sorrow, guidance in perplexity, advice for our problems, rebuke for our sins, and daily inspiration for our every need.

The Bible, alone, truly answers the greatest questions asked throughout human history, "Where

have I come from?", "Where am I going?", "Why am I here?", "How can I know what truth

really is?". The Bible answers all these critical questions and much more. The Bible reveals

the truth about God, the origin of the human race, points out the way to salvation and eternal

life, and explains the age-old problem of sin and suffering.

The great theme of the Bible is the Lord Jesus Christ and His redemptive work for humanity.

The person and work of Jesus Christ are promised, prophesied and pictured in symbols and

types throughout the Old Testament. The humanity and divinity of Christ is revealed in the

Gospels while His death and resurrection are explained in the Epistles. His glorious return to

earth is clearly foretold in the Book of Revelation.

In short, the great purpose of the Bible is to reveal the living

Word of God in the person of Jesus Christ (John 1:1-18). My

beloved Canaan family, you do not need a whole library of

books to study the Bible. The Bible is its own best commentary and interpreter, for the Bible

explains the Bible. The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed, and the New

Testament is the Old Testament revealed.

I'm looking forward to seeing you in Church School and WOW (Word on Wednesday) so we

may continue to grow together as Pastor and People in His Word.

    Stay Strong!

Dr. Christopher Alan Bullock, Senior Pastor

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

    Canaans Mission Statement

    An urban Baptist Church which

serves as a vanguard of liberation,

    faith and empowerment through our

    Christian witness. Canaans

mission is to do ministry for the

    Master through the five-fold

    ministries of Discipleship,

    Fellowship, Service, Worship and

    Evangelism.

    Canaans Core Values

    Congregational Intimacy

    (1 Corinthians 13:13)

    Salvation For The Lost

    (St. John 3:16)

    Applied Christianity

    (James 2:14-20)

    Impact the Human Condition

    (St. Luke 4:18-19)

Thank you for worshipping with us at Canaan Baptist church. The

corporate life of this congregation is the true witness of the vitality of our

faith. While the high point of our Christian service is to be found in the

experience of Sunday worship, what we do from Monday to Saturday,

speaks volumes about Canaans commitment and dedication to Christ and our community.

Canaan is a family where all of us are saved sinners hammering out our salvation under the auspices of Gods amazing grace. We are structured, but not so structured as to prevent the powerful work of the Holy Spirit to

impact the life of our in-reach and outreach ministries. We are organized, but not so organized to prevent the organism, which is the

    Church, from bearing full life.

    We Welcome You!

It is when there are no

    words to be said and

    our hands are lifted up

    that music is able to

express the inexpressible. And, as the organ sounds and

the drum beats on Sunday mornings our souls cry out in

praise. The Music Ministry at Canaan, led by the Minister

of Music and Sacred Arts- Dr. Arvis Strickling-Jones, has

in no small part contributed to the success of Canaan

Baptist Church and its efforts towards bringing souls to

Christ. This ministry, with its 7 distinct choirs The Voices of Canaan (V.O.C.), Silver Voices, Joyful Noize,

The Mighty Men of Canaan (M.M.O.C.), Singing Sisters,

Women of Worship, and the Unity Mass Choir offering both traditional as well as contemporary musical

selections, helps to lift the hearts of its worshippers

through its music, while ushering in the Holy Spirit and

setting the atmosphere for true worship and the preached

word. Nothing can soothe the heart like the right chord

played on an organ or the perfect song sung by a choir.

The power of music has always had the ability to wash

away the pain of the past and our daily worries; the music

at Canaan helps to lift the hearts of its members and

impact the human condition in a way that other ministries

cannot. This ministrys music allows all that hear it not only a source of praise but also a source of hope.

The ministry will soon offer classes to enhance/develop

    musical gifts in 2013:

    Vocal technique

    Soloist/lead singing

    Choir Direction

If you are interested in any of these classes or want to

join any of the choirs, please see or email Dr. Arvis at

    [email protected]

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God

while I have being (Psalm 104:33).

    Delawares Path to Freedom

Before the Civil War, Delaware was an important link in the Underground Railroad system for helping runaway

slaves travel to freedom. Situated between the southern slave-holding states and the northern anti-slave states,

Delaware was traveled by hundreds of escaping slaves each year.

Although neither underground nor a railroad, the system was named because its activities had to be carried out

in secret and because railway terms were used to refer to the behavior of the system. Various routes were called

lines; stopping places were called stations; those who assisted along the way were conductors, and the slaves

were known as packages or freight. One of the most important conductors in the system was the legendary

Harriett Tubman and Thomas Garrett, a Quaker from Wilmington. After the escapees traveled north through

rural Maryland and Delaware, Garrett arranged their passage, often by steamboat, to Philadelphia which was a

central station run by a large free-Black religious community and the abolitionist Quakers.

Delaware became the bridge to freedom and the site of the last attempt at capture for slave hunters. Harriet

Tubman made 19 trips into slave territory and led many people to free land. To avoid detection, she used a

variety of routes, which took her through many Delaware communities including New Castle, Dover,

Middletown, Laurel, Delaware City and Wilmington. Probably no one knew Delaware's geography better than

Harriet Tubman! Estimates of the number of slaves who reached freedom vary greatly, from 40,000 to 100,000

during the sixty years before the Civil War.

The Touch of The Masters Hand

"It was battered and scarred and the auctioneer thought

it hardly worth his while, to waste much time on the

old violin so he held it up with a smile. What am I

bidden for this old violin? Who'll start the bidding for

me? A dollar...who'll make it two? Two dollars, and

who'll make it three? Three dollars once, three dollars

twice, going for three, but no; from the back of the

room a gray haired man came forward and picked up

the bow. Then sweeping the dust from the old violin,

and tightening up all the strings, he played a melody

pure and sweet, as sweet as the angels sing. The music

ceased and the auctioneer, with a voice that was quiet

and low, said, "What am I bid for this old violin? and

he held it up with the bow. A thousand dollars, and

who'll make it two? Two Thousand, and who'll make

it three? Three thousand once, three thousand twice,

going, and gone,' said he. The people cheered, but

some of them said, 'We do not quite understand. What

changed its worth? Then came the reply, 'the touch

    of the Master's hand.'

And many a man with his life out of

tune, battered and scarred with sin,

is auctioned cheap to a thoughtless

crowd, much like the old violin. A

mess of pottage, a glass of wine, a

game, and he shuffles along; going

once, going twice, he's going and almost gone. But the

Master comes, and the thoughtless crowd never can

quite understand, the worth of the soul, and the change

that's wrought, by 'the touch of the Master's hand.'
