CAN I BE A !"#$%&FIRST THINGS

FIRST...

01

Most people will tell you to be a model you need to be tall, slender and beautiful. This might be the case for High End Fashion mod-els. But, if you do not have the High End Fash-ion model-esk look, do not worry, as there are so many other areas models can successfully work in. The modelling industry does not define what height, size or skin colour the agents want. The industry is as diverse as the description of a model. Every agency and every client looks for different things. Models can range from being on the runway in Milan to being in the background of a Neighbours commercial. Explore the various options of modelling and see which one appeals to you the most. You will need to find out the physical prerequisites

for the type of modelling you prefer most. However, do not get discouraged if you do not fit the criteria exactly. There have been many exceptions to the industry standard. As long as you are dedicated and committed you will be surprised what you can achieve. To give you an example of a famous model that does not fit the height minimum for run-way modelling, is the persistent Kate Moss. She is shorter than other supermodels and her height is below the industry standard, however she has been on numerous, prestig-ious, designer catwalks around the world and is now one of the highest paid top models! If you are good at what you do and work hard for it, there can always be an exception to the rule!

PLUS SIZE MODELS

PETITE MODELS:

COMMERCIAL PRINT

This model wears larger garments, is tall, in proportion, toned and is between sizes 12 to 20. This type of modelling has increased in popular-ity and more and more advertisers are using Plus Size Models to pro-mote their products in the efforts to appeal to a larger demographic. There is no market still for BiB male models. In North America these models sometimes earn more than editorial models! For High Fashion Plus Sized Models you need to be around 172 cm (5”8).

This model is quite small and will wear smaller garments. A petite model is usually around 5’6” (168 cm) to 5’7” (170 cm).

There is a great market for commercial print advertising. It ranges from magazines, to billboards, to products seen on the shelves at a supermarket. A great perk about working in this industry is that the target audience varies – so there are many opportunities for you here if you do not fall into the High Fashion division.

TV COMMERCIALS

PEOPLE MODELS AND TV OR FILM EXTRAS

These models do not have height, size or age requirements, as each commercial will need something different. It will usu-ally require you to have some acting skills, as you may need to talk or behave in a cer-tain way. Commercials range from highly stylised, photographic, to reality style.

If you like the idea of modelling, but you don’t quite fit into those categories, this could be perfect for you. Real life models, also known as people models, are used in everyday ads or corporate campaigns where they are looking for someone as a TV/ Film Extra.

Most of the time these jobs will have no speaking parts and you will simply be in the background. These jobs are quite interesting and can pay very well as the hours are long (there is a lot of waiting around... and the waiting around is paid for – hooray!).

ALL-ROUNDER MODELS

GLAMOUR MODELLING

This kind of model is usually working in all areas of modelling ie: photographic, catwalk, showroom and acting / TV commercials.

This type of modelling emphasises a model’s sex appeal and can range from lingerie and swimwear to nude photography for men’s magazines like ZOO or Ralph. A glamour model is confident, sexy and is extremely ex-traverted. These models do not have height require-ments, which is appealing for many mod-els. But if you consider doing this kind of modelling we would advise you have a good agent who will look out for your best interest – as many models, especially those that are younger, can get taken advantage of.

CATALOGUE MODELLING

BODY PARTS MODELS

You would have definitely seen a catalogue model in print or online before! Clients use these models to sell their latest line of cloth-ing or products and, of course, the model’s job is to make these items look more appealing to

the consumer. With the increasing number of websites and apps going up these days more models are being used to promote their goods online - this is a lucrative industry for many models!

This is not something a model generally thinks of when they go into the modelling industry, but yes, it is actually a very lucrative industry. Most common body parts are hair, eyes, lips, hands, feet, legs, etc, which are used to promote brands and products in print and TV. Surprisingly this industry can be quite profitable!

!"#$%%'()HOW DOES NUTRITION

IMPACT MY

LIFE?

03

Even if you were born with one of those super fast metabolisms that everyone wished they had... there is more to nutrition than meets the eye.

For a model that looks slim it doesn’t necessar-ily mean that they are fit and healthy. Working models are obligated to look after themselves more than any other profession. The main goal is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many new models go into the industry think-ing they need to diet, drink skinny teas, eat just carrots or do other crazy things. Our answer to this is NO, you don’t! You can probably eat more than you currently do now and more fre-quently, whilst maintaining a healthy model-esk weight, so long as you are eating the right foods! By eating the right types of foods you will main-tain a healthy body and healthy mind.

Our models go through healthy eating plans, get given healthy recipes which are heart tick approved (National Heart Foundation Ap-

proved) and approved by the DAA (Dietitians Association of Australia). Our models under-stand their food groups and much, much more. So our students can create a maintainable and healthy lifestyle as a model. They see improve-ments in the quality and strength of their nails, the shine of their hair and the glow and purity of their skin. YES, this comes from eating the right foods. Not eating or eating bad foods can lead to dry, fizzy, brittle hair, poor quality nails, acne and other problems. Not to mention the overall damage to your body. Some simple things you can change today are to start looking after yourself as part of your regular daily life - you will remain looking and feeling much healthier this way!If you eat well you will have a balanced diet (yes that means you can have a treat every now and then). As models work long hours (and can get quite tired) it is important to eat regularly to keep the body and mind active. You should also always keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water (at least 2Lts per day).

Page 14: Can I be a model?

There is a lot of pressure that goes onto a model when she or he is working – as the job is all about your appearance. Many mod-els don’t have enough time to dedicate to exercise but you need to prioritise it as part of your daily routine. Lack of exercise and working long hours can easily lead to your health deteriorating. Exercise is also a great time to give your mind some ‘me time’ and reflect on what you can improve on, set some new goals, and sim-ply enjoy the scenery and relax!

Building your portfolio, also known as folio, does take a lot of time, dedication and effort! It doesn’t happen over night. Even with our courses you are looking at spend-ing anywhere from 4 weeks (in an editorial short course) to 11 weeks. This requires a lot of your time in and out of the course to perfect your mind, body and skills. Without this dedication and time you cannot expect to jump from being a model starting out to getting signed with some of our large model alliances like Chadwick,

Vivien’s, London... to name a few. These agents rely on our recommendations and trust that we can vouch that you have taken the time and made the effort to get to where you need to go! You must be strong-minded and resilient to get into this industry. Even with castings, we may set up 3 or 4 castings or looksee’s for you and each time it will require you to be confident and strong willed. It is a fiercely competitive industry so you need to get your mind into gear!

PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE

-DON’T BE A#'./00000000000000000000!"#$%,

06

To be a successful model, believe it or not, you need to have the right attitude - despite some of the diva stories you would have heard. If you are a drama queen, you will be seen as high maintenance and could damage the agent’s reputation or worse, upset the clients, clientele or creative team! If you are happy, pleasant, helpful and pos-itive it will speak volumes to the client and their creative team. Remember, every photographer or makeup artist you work with, works with other clients... if you have a positive attitude and they take a liking to you, you never know where those contacts can take you! As a model you need to be prepared to work long hours in a studio or backstage getting ready for the runway and no one wants to get attitude from you (they are just as tired as you are!). Learn to keep your positive cap on!

I KNOW'0/!0+$/#1,07

If you want to succeed as a model you honestly have to put the time, effort, dedication and most importantly, your heart and soul into it. Now that you know you are ready to take the plunge you need to think about what the realistic steps are. Are you going to do this by yourself or will you invest in being taught by a model-ling academy like us?Start setting your goals with VIM – Visualise, Internal-ise, Materialise. With any aspiring model, it is important to write down what your goals are. Know what kind of modelling you would like to do. Think about how you are going to learn - will you learn the technical skills online or through a learning facility? There are various sources available online for new mod-els, you can even sign up to our blog, which will give you advice on what to wear to interviews, tips and tricks of the trade, updates on open castings and much more! As you are doing research on modelling, make a list of

the modelling agencies you would like to contact and categorise them (the directory we give out to our stu-dents for Melbourne alone has close to 300 reputable agents). A great idea is to divide your directory into categories: for example our directory is divided into Model Agents, Commercial / Talent Model Agents, Promotional Model Agents, Plus Size Model Agents, Scouting and Management Agents, Smaller Model-ling Agents, Casting Agents (Acting, Film and TV) and International Agents. This is an important step so you can choose the kind of agency that matches the kind of modelling you want to do. When you are confident you have short-listed the agents you like, you should send them a courtesy email (send them your Model CV along with your images: Po-laroid, High Fashion, Commercial and Beauty). Follow up with a call the next day to make sure they have re-ceived your email (if they haven’t already contacted you back) and ask if you can come in for a looksee. You are

Page 17: Can I be a model?

50% of the way there! If you are looking at the above steps and thinking, I don’t have a portfolio or those kinds of images you must get those arranged first! Agencies want to take models that look like they are serious about mod-elling and have invested their time to get to where they need to be. A photo from a friend on a white wall will not do! We speak to Agents every week, when we send them our student’s images and composition cards, and they want to see clean images by professional photographers who know what they are doing (not creative images with crazy makeup dripping down your face or covering your body holding loads of designer bags – it may look cool but its not what a top end agent wants to see). Clean images are what Agents like to call ‘industry ready’. When the portfolio is done right the agent can use these portfolio images straight away on their site and they don’t have to waste their time re-doing it (not to mention the fact that it will cost you more money to replace your old portfolio images)! Don’t waste your money on these

types of portfolios! Many models make this mistake be-cause Agencies sell you on creative photos that look ex-citing but they don’t have your interest at heart (they just want the sale) otherwise they would make your portfolio the way Agents what them done… like we do!If you want to pick a photographer by yourself some great questions to as are: 1.Does the photographer take portfolio photos FOR models (in which case they usually make the portfolio the way the model wants it done. It is usually very crea-tive BUT it is unlikely that it will be industry ready)?2.Does the photographer take portfolio photos for Agencies (in which case this photographer will have to take photos that are industry ready)? If the photographer answers ‘yes’ to questions 2, that would be the one we would go with! There are a lot of photographers these days that take advantage of aspiring models and they do not pro-duce the level of quality that agents want to see. Why? Because the cost of the camera and equipment is not something an everyday photographer would have. A photographer that makes industry ready portfolios may be more expensive to begin with but think about the savings seems you didn’t have to re-do your port-folio all over again (there is no such thing as cheap and cheerful in the modelling industry)!Ok so now you know the good and the bad about port-folios, lets look at what you can do with your industry ready images! As you are starting your modelling journey you want to start getting exposure – you can use sites or pages to promote yourself. Just be careful with the people that approach you. Remember, safety comes first and if you are working with someone new, (and you are freelanc-ing) take a friend along with you for security (if they are not happy about it, don’t do the shoot or job because something’s up!). For models that go through our course they are lucky as they get published online in our gradu-ates page (which has recently undergone some exciting new updates to enhance exposure) and they also get ex-posure to Melbourne’s most prestigious Agents. As long as your goals are set from the get-go you should have a well thought out and defined picture of where you want your modelling journey to go! And if you get rejected, try and try again! Just because you are not this agent’s look, doesn’t mean there isn’t someone else who is waiting for you!

These are great for castings and looksees – or even running from one job to the next. If you can perfect this style you will be ready for your castings and in-terviews.

Grab the centre of your hair (at the top), lean your head back and comb it back with a fine-toothed comb – this will also create some vol-ume. As you sweep your hair into the ponytail leave a few strands loose to make the style less formal. Pull a two centimetre wide section of hair from underneath your ponytail and spray it with hairspray (so it gives a smooth appearance when its wrapped around your elastic band). While the hairspray is still wet on the hair, wrap it around your elastic band (so its no longer vis-ible) and fix it in with a bobby pin. Backcomb at the crown of your head to get the Selina Gomez look and lightly hairspray.

:"+0000!/%$5You guys are pretty easy to teach! If you are going into a casting or a looksee be sure to use minimal product (nothing that looks wet). And style your hair for the occasion! For example, say you were going to a hair casting, you would do something to volumise your hair to show the client they can do something with it!

There is a trick to learning how to apply makeup as a male model... a little makeup can go a long way towards accentuating your best features and hiding flaws. Too much makeup and you run the risk of looking ‘made up’. The key is to apply a balance of how much you use and where you use it!

New York Fashion week was our inspiration for the barely-there beauty look. For jobs it is all about flawless beauty!

To achieve the barely-there beauty look you need to start with a moisturiser (be sure to have cleansed and toned beforehand to remove oils from your skin. This will help with applying your makeup better) and primer before putting on your foundation. If you are blessed with the perfect, flawless skin, you do

not need the foundation. If you need some covering up, use your ‘ring’ finger (this finger is the weakest finger and is perfect to use on gentle areas like covering blem-ishes or under the eyes). After you have applied a light layer of foundation move onto your eyebrows. Use a brow brush to define your brows and to make them look neater (if you have a case of the unruly browns use some brow gel to set it in place). In this look they have gone for an up-swept brow look.

The next step would be to dust the apples of your cheeks with a light, soft pink hue (blush). To find where the ap-ples of your cheeks are, smile in the mirror and they will be the most prominent part.Finish off with a matt lip balm (for men) or a nice lip-gloss (females).

TIME TO WALK 000-3$08/%?,09

If only it was so simple! We would love to download the intricate tips, tricks and tech-niques of runway into this e-book but the simple truth is - to learn it, you need to do it! Anyone who thinks you can learn run-way out of a book or even in one class would be kidding themselves! To give you an idea, we cover three weeks of hands-on runway learning and we take smaller classes to en-hance your learning so you get more time on the runway and more contact time with your trainer – so any tricky techniques can be addressed.

We record the sequence movements of your walk, analyse and discussed it with you so you can continuously seek to improve af-ter every class. It’s not a matter of come in, practice and then that’s that. To learn prop-erly you need to see what you are doing. The benefits of this are you clearly understand how to improve your techniques, posture and poses! And, most importantly you will become more confident that your technique has been developed and improved as you can see the changes from week to week!

YOU MIGHT THINK IT’S A BORE BUT YOU NEED TO LEARN

HOW TO DO YOUR FINANCES… THINK OF THE SAVINGS!

10As a model you will be in charge of invoicing your clients or agent (I bet you everyone has stayed clear of this topic haven’t they?). No other Academy even touches on this! The Australian Academy of Mod-eling’s founders know from years worth of being in the modelling industry that not knowing your finances is a headache for the agent, for your ac-countant and worst of all – for you!

It is such a simple thing once you have learnt it – did you know those shoes you just bought are a tax deduction? No, well time to start looking into it! Knowing these things is just fascinating! Our financial masterclass teaches you everything from how to do an invoice, you get given invoice tem-plates, cashflow templates, and you even learn all the cool tips on what you can get deductions on! Who said financials had to be useless and boring?

Page 24: Can I be a model?

OK, SO WE HAVE LEFT THE BEST TO LAST! PORTFOLIO ADVICE!

11This is our favorite part of our comprehensive model course, spending 4 weeks in a huge, incredible studio learning how to pose, what your best angles are, get-ting dolled up by fashion stylists with a phenomenal wardrobe and being pampered by our makeup artists (who leave you looking flawless). Editorial is all about the skills you learn and the bonus is taking away a portfolio that is industry ready!

You wouldn’t think it but we actually invest in teach-ing you TVC (television commercials) and working with scripts in your first class! Why? What do they have to do with each other we hear you asking? Every-thing! Being in front of the camera is all about acting, learning how to play a role or show an emotion to sell a product or item. It’s about having a connection with the camera that goes deeper than the average look. It lets the reader connect with that feeling, expression, movement or pose that makes you more than just an image. This is what differentiates you from every oth-er model and set yours photographs up for the win-ning edge.

In our courses we take intimate classes to give you more time in front of the camera and more time with your trainer. It also means more time for makeup art-ists and wardrobe! We don’t cram your shoots into one day; we invest into you over 4 weeks and give you some serious training. As this is the last module in the course, you have already established confidence,

mindset, nutrition, finances, learnt all the industry makeup looks and hairstyles, and runway (you are more confident with knowing your body and how to move it) – editorial is the last natural transgression into becoming a professional model!

When you think about your portfolio you need to think about what the agent wants, not what your pho-tographer or you want. Once you are signed you can get as creative as you like. But you need to think smart and work with the best people who will have your best interest at heart and do what is best for you!

Your ticks off list before going to get signed with an agent:

Have you done your homework on interviewing Do you know what to expect and wear in castings Have you finished writing up your Model CV Do you have an ABN Do you have an up-to-date portfolio Do you have a professional model portfolio book Do you have composition cards (optional) Do you have all the required startup skills you need to start working
