Can do,but can'tpromise
anythingBy KATE BASTABLEkate. basta [email protected]
HE SAYS he can do, butLNP leader - in-waitingCampbell Newmancould make no promisesto the people of Mackaywhile in town yesterday.
"I'll be coming backin the future talkingabout policies once I'vehad a chance to digesteverything I've beentold on this trip," MrNewman said while onan information gatheringtour of North Queens-land.
"Most importantly,we need to costthings . It would beirresponsible tostart making pro-mises - I'm notgoing to do that,
but I will be back in thefuture with some veryfirm, very clear promisesfor this area , which weintend to deliver on."
However, Mr Newmanis promising to cut outthe "stupidity" of theState Government.
"We don't want to seesilly projects like the onewe were near today(Edmund Casey Bridge)where a brand newbridge is built for$43 million and it's nogood when it floods(because you can't crossFursden Creek to get toit).
"It sort of defeats thepurpose of having abridge, doesn 't it? It'sthat sort of stupidity thatI intend to address."

Mr Newman said the LNPwould deliver a plan toupgrade the Bruce Highway,a "vital economic arterialfor Queensland" that wasregularly cut by flooding.
"Frankly, it will take aperiod of time - I would beproposing probably that itbe a 10-year plan.
"It might sound like along period of time, but thatis the only responsible andsensible way to do it, andwe need to get FederalGovernment funding be-cause it is a responsibility oftheirs."
Mr Newman said a goodcandidate had put up hishand to run for the seat ofMackay. However, he said itwas a matter for the LNP todecide. The LNP offered alot to the region, he said.
"I am saying to peopleacross Queensland there's anew team, there's newenergy and leadership, there's a track record ofdelivery for myself at thehead ofthat team and webelieve that people across

Queensland should have agood look at what we'reoffering.
`I believe this seat hasn'tbeen particularly wellserved by Labor.
"The hospital is anotherexample where the currentnew hospital construction iswell and truly overdue - 10years overdue arguably.
"How much have thepeople of Mackay got fromthat great Labor representa-tion? Clearly nothing.
"The recurring themesthat keep coming through isthat people are sick andtired of a Brisbane-centricState Government; peopleare sick and tired of a fai-lure to invest in infrastruc-ture for the region; peopleare sick and tired of growthpressures, particularly inMackay, not being dealtwith properly - not adeq-uately planning for thefuture. The overriding issueright across the state iscost-of-living pressures...so-mething has to be doneabout it."

Campbell comes to town on a whirlwind visitBy Ryan Groube
NEWLY appointed state opposition leader Campbell Newman made a flying visit to Mareeba on Thursday to meet lo(
approaching state election.
Mr Newman arrived at Borzi Park in a helicopter before meeting with Tablelands Regional Council mayor Tom Gilmoi
brief, 20 minute meet and greet on Byrnes Street.
He conceded the trip was nowhere near long enough to truly understand the needs and issues facing Mareeba locals
"It is clearly not enough time. But I do want to show the north that I am taking them seriously," he said.
"I wanted to show people that I want to be the premier of Queensland, not the premier of Brisbane."
Mr Newman did not make any firm policy announcements during the one hour visit but said flood proofing the Bruce I
"It is a big, big problem," he said.
"The highway needs to be flood-proofed and we need to look at starting with the worst bits and hitting them first.
"We also need to examine alternative inland routes, particularly for freight."
The visit was greeted with fierce criticism from Labor's state member for Cook, Jason O'Brien, and the Minister for K
Wallace.
Mr Wallace said upgrading the Bruce Highway was too important to be left to someone who last travelled on the norti
"After some of the worst flooding in living memory on the Bruce, we need someone who knows our local problems - r
ago," he said.

Mr Newman said he wants the LNP to get Queensland back doing what this state was once famousfor - building, improving and maintaining facilities and delivering services for the benefit of allQueenslanders,
Mr Seeney said the Labor government has repeatedly proved that it is incapable of planning andtotally inept at delivery.
"Queenslanders shouldn't have to put up with repeated excuses for poor roads, rundown schoolsand hospitals, and sub-standard public transport," Mr Newman said.
"We intend to deliver an infrastructure investment strategy that won't just rebuild Queensland butrestore and revive the state from its Labor-induced slumber."
Mr Newman said the LNP shadow ministry has a can-do attitude.

Hospital wins under NewmanBy Heather O'Neill
THE Ingham Hospital will again comeunder the control of a local board underan LNP State Government.
A local board would administer thehospital's day to day operations andhave a big say in how resources areallocated.
The revelation was made as MrNewman took a stroll down LannercostStreet, frequently stopping to shakehands and talk to locals and tourists,
Mr Newman reiterated that he was"not on this trip to make commit-ments", but rather to listen to his col-leagues and the public.
But he said handing control of localhospitals back to the people who knewbest would form part of the LNP'spolicy platform at the next state election.
"That is probably going to be one ofour policies in terms of local control,"he said
"I think that's one (policy) that youcan be confident that the leadership teamwill he talking about because the font ofknowledge is not in George Street, Bris-
bane - it is here in local communities."Describing stories of the Herbert re-
gion's women giving birth on the road toTownsville as "unacceptable", MrNewman said he would work withMember for Hinchinbrook AndrewCripps to find a solution.
He adopted the same position on theissues of permanently re-locating Ing-ham's fire station and providing flood-free access over Palm Creek.
"When Anna Bligh became thepremier, we had state debt of $30 billionand that was four years ago," he said.
"Today it is $52 billion and in twoyears it is going to he $79.5 billion.
"Next year the state's deficit is $4billion which is 10 per cent of the annualbudget of $42 to $43 billion so again, itis. just not credible for me, or indeed theother side, to come into town and say`we'll fix the fire station' and 'we'regoing to lix the maternity services',
"I'm not saying we're not going tomake commitments on any of thesethings, but I'm not going to make themtoday."
In relation to North Queensland
Broanergy's proposed $4J0 million co-generation sugar factory, Mr Newmansaid it was a worthwhile project.
"That sounds like a positive from thepoint of view of reinvestment in theindustry," he said.
On the issue of the proposed forcedremoval of fishing huts from the HalifaxBay Wetlands National Park, MrNewman said he would hope the LNPcould reverse the policy if elected.
Mr Newman said he supported theconcept of dredging Cattle Creek and theHerbert River to help alleviate flooding.
He described the Bruce Highway as a"vital arterial of Queensland".
"We need a plan, which we willhave...for a proper upgrade programover 10 years to take out these hoodingspots that paralyse everything," he said,
"Four hundred closures in two yearsis just not acceptable."
Mr Newman said returning power tolocal governments would also he a pri-ority if elected.
"I want to give them the authorityand the resources to look after their localcommunities." he said.
