Objective

• To construct a 10x10x20 cm contraption, to insulate a 355 mL can filled with hot water, in an ice bath, while applying our knowledge of energy/heat transfer.

Design

In the “Survivor” we used:• Styrofoam• Bubble wrap• Synthetic Fleece• Packing Peanuts• Cotton Balls

• We used these materials, especially the Styrofoam, because they were highly water-proof and insulated well. The synthetic fleece added an extra layer of support, and the bubble wrap trapped warm air inside causing the cold air to stay out. The packing peanuts and cotton balls were put in for extra insulation.

Construction

• Step 1: Gather all materials.• Step 2: Cut out a 9x9x18cm Synthetic Fleece rectangle.• Step 3:Glue foam rectanglesonto Fleece half an inch apart.• Step 4: Glue bubble wrap onto foam..• Step 5: Fold sides and glue rectangles together to create a box.• Step 6: Cut off access Fleece and foam.• Step 7: Put some cotton balls and/or packing peanuts into insulator.• Step 8:Wrap the whole insulator with tape.

Design Reflection

• Overall, our insulator “Survivor” was a success. We tied for 2nd place in our class competition. Our insulator was a success mainly because of the large walls of Styrofoam which in every side was covered in bubble wrap. One of the things we could have done differently would be our level of craftsmanship. We could have changed the materials we used to be more varied, for example: corkboard or core board which were both widely used. Other then that our insulator exceeded our expectations.
