ALLAN HANCOCKCOLLEGE ISUC-DESIGNATEDTRANSFER SITE� High school studentsseeking enrollment at aUniversity of Californiacampus now have a newoption: the University ofCalifornia Dual AdmissionsProgram (DAP). AllanHancock College has beenselected by the UC systemto receive additional sup-port for students in theDAP program. AllanHancock College is theonly community college inSan Luis Obispo and SantaBarbara counties toreceive this designation.

The UC system has justintroduced this new admis-sions option for studentswho fall between the top 4and 12.5 percent of theirhigh school graduatingclass and who are not eligi-ble to attend the Universityof California directly fromhigh school. Under theDAP program, students inthis category who apply toone or more UC campusesand meet certain minimalrequirements will receive aguaranteed offer of admis-sion from a specific UCcampus, provided they firstcomplete a transfer pro-

gram of study at a Califor-nia community college.Students who use DAP enterthe UC system as juniors.

To ensure transfer suc-cess for these students,Allan Hancock College and31 other California com-munity colleges have beenselected by the UC systemto receive more intensivesupport from UC counselors.

B.S. DEGREEOFFERED BY CSUBAKERSFIELD� Allan Hancock Collegeand CSU Bakersfield haveannounced a new partner-ship that will offer a bach-elor’s degree in businessadministration at AllanHancock College. Upper-division business courseswill be offered in the win-ter and spring quarters of2004 with the businessadministration BS programslated to begin in the fallquarter of 2004. The pro-gram will allow 20 studentsper new academic year.Allan Hancock College willprovide all the lower-divi-sion general education andmajor preparation courserequirements, while CSUBakersfield will provide allthe upper-division generaleducation and major courserequirements. This bringsto four the number of uni-versities Allan HancockCollege has linked with tooffer upper division uni-versity classes right on theHancock campus. UCSBoffers bachelor’s degreesin English and history;University of La Verneoffers a bachelor’s degreein child development, andHoly Names College offersnurses the opportunity tocomplete a bachelor’sdegree in registered nurs-

NEW EQUIPMENTFOR AUTO LAB� In life, Blaine Johnsonheld the record for themost wins as a top alcoholdragster in the NationalHot Rod Association(NHRA).

Today, Blaine’s legacylives on through the ongo-ing efforts of his family tosupport state-of-the-artteaching in the AllanHancock College automo-tive, industrial technologyand engineering curricula.The family has establisheda $100,000 scholarshipendowment at the collegein Blaine’s name and todate has donated morethan $180,000 worth ofhigh tech equipment tosupport the industrialtechnology labs. Fundingfor this support comesthrough proceeds from theannual Blaine JohnsonMemorial GolfTournament.

This year, the familydonated a $40,000 cylin-der block power hone withaccessory tools to theautomotive program.

The Allan HancockCollege automotive tech-nology program offersdegrees and certificates inall phases of automotiverepair.

ENVIRONMENTALSTUDIES� Environmental Studies—the newest major at AllanHancock College— “willprovide you with a strongscientific background inhow the biological andphysical earth works, anda strong social sciencesbackground in how humansact and interact with theplanet,” said Jeffrey Meyer,science instructor.

Two new environmentalstudies options exist: anA.A. degree in environ-mental studies with eithera social sciences option ora natural sciences option.

TRANSFERSUCCESS � Recent statistics showthe acceptance rates forAllan Hancock College stu-dents transferring to four-year universities haveclimbed, in some instancesdramatically. For example,the college’s office of insti-tutional research reports:

• The average acceptancerate for Allan HancockCollege students to CalPoly is 60 percent greaterthan the total rate for alltransfer applicants in thepast five years.

• The average acceptancerate of Allan Hancock Collegestudents to UC SantaBarbara is 18 percentgreater than all transferapplicants.

• Transfers by AllanHancock College studentsto the California StateUniversity system increased18 percent in the past fiveyears, compared to 11percent statewide.

• Allan Hancock Collegeis preparing students fortransfer at a faster ratethan the California com-munity college system.

FEE INCREASE/FINANCIAL AID� The new state budgetincludes a raise in thestudent enrollment fees atall 108 California commu-nity colleges to $18 a unit.Fees at the communitycolleges are established bythe state legislature andfunds generated by thefees go back to the stategeneral fund.

“Anytime fees are raisedit affects students,” saidAllan Hancock CollegeSuperintendent/ PresidentAnn Foxworthy, Ph.D.“However, at $18 a unit,California communitycolleges, including Han-cock, remain the mostaffordable communitycolleges in the UnitedStates. In addition, Iremind everyone that helpwith college costs is avail-able, and with the higher

fee we expect even morestudents than ever to qual-ify for financial aid.”

The application for theBoard of Governor’s (BOG)fee waiver is a simple, one-page document available atall campus locations.

BULLDOGSSPORTS EXCEL� Led by a top golfer anda record-breaking discusthrower, Allan HancockCollege’s athletes excelledlast spring.

Josh Warthen—perhapsthe most accomplishedgolfer in Allan HancockCollege history—outstroked77 other players to winthe southern Californiaregional tournament. Heended one stroke behindthe leader at the statechampionship.

Track and field star NikaMiller threw the discus 145feet, 8 inches to set a newAllan Hancock Collegerecord while winning thatevent at the state regionaltrack meet. Then she putthe shot 39 feet 2 inchesto take second place at thesame meet.

Chris Stevens was namedco-coach of the year forthe northern division ofthe Western State Confer-ence after his baseball team,including four playersnamed to the all-conferenceteam, won second place inthe northern division.

The women’s tennisteam finished the seasonranked third in the state,with a 16-1 record, andshared the Western StateConference title for the

first time. Coach JackHawkins was named co-coach of the year.

LVN CLASSEARNS 100%PASS RATE� A report just released bythe state shows that 100percent of the students inthe latest Licensed VocationalNursing class at AllanHancock College passedtheir state board examina-tion in their first attempt.

“This confirms the highlevel of professionalismwithin the program andhighlights the fact thatnursing students at Hancockare well prepared to enterthe workforce,” said DottiePhillips, Ed.D, theassociate dean of healthoccupations.

Phillips credits dedicatedfaculty, up-to-date curricu-lum, and motivatedstudents for the program’songoing success.

CAD CLASSES � The latest industryapproaches to computer-aided drafting are part ofthe engineering technologysequence offered at AllanHancock College. BeginningMechanical Drafting, Introto Computer Aided Drafting,Engineering Drawing andAdvanced EngineeringDrawing are some of theclasses offered to helpindividuals interested in acareer in drafting or archi-tectural drafting. Theclasses are closely linkedwith the college’s architec-ture technology program,which offers training forentry-level positions inarchitectural drafting,construction or engineer-ing fields, or preparationfor transfer to a four-yearuniversity architectureprogram.
