peaceful and prosperous New Year. -- The UAB Police Department

The UAB Police Department’s Communications Unit provides services to the entire UAB community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and they field an average 144,000 calls each year. The unit is led by Supervisor Sherry Hale (above) and staffed by 14 dispatchers.

A police dispatcher directs the police to areas they are needed throughout the 86-block hospital and campus area. The dispatcher works to obtain accurate information from the calling party so they may properly prepare the responding officer. Often the caller is so emotionally involved, even distraught.

The UAB Police Department recently implemented a new Computer-Aided Dispatch system that allows the unit to minimize response time and helps dispatchers make the correct response decisions. In addition, new mobile data software used by the department allows police officers to transmit and receive important, time-saving information in the field, which increases productivity.
