Primary responsibility is...Listen, Inform, and Report! Listen
to the victim about the alleged allegations which are being made in
good faith Inform and encourage the person reporting the crime to
Contact NOVA PD and file a police report. A person who talks to you
may not want to talk to police and they do not have to. YOU are the
liaison and are required to report the crime via the Clery form Let
them know they can file an official police report at anytime Report
and disclose the information to NOVA PD As soon as possible To
determine if a Timely Warning is necessary To assist in any
follow-up investigations or preventative measures CSA Roles and
Responsibilities at NOVA Closed Captioning So what do CSAs have to
do? Quite simply, CSAs must report alleged crimes made to them in
good faith to the College Police. CSAs are not required to
determine the actual validity of the reported crime; that is the
responsibility of the police. It is usually in the best interest
for the victim to report the incident to the police because other
assistance with physical and mental well being can be provided.
However a person who talks to you may not want to talk to the
police, and this is okay. Encourage the victim to report the crime
officially for the safety of others. If the victim chooses not to
involve the police let the victim know that every effort is taken
to protect the confidentiality of the victims identity. But in any
event as a CSA you must still report the crime by filling out a
form which can be done anonymously. Campus Security Authority

How to Report as a CSA Fill out NOVAs Crime Statistics Report
Form (105-174) Just get the facts You do not have to prove what
happened or who was at fault You are not supposed to find the
accused DONT identify the victim if they dont want to be identified
Contact NOVA PD promptly so we may determine if a timely warning
must be issued by submitting the completed form Forward your
completed 105-174 to NOVA PD or Chief Dusseau Closed Captioning
CSAs are not normally trained investigators. Therefore, just get
the facts related to the crime and report the facts to NOVA police
via form 105- 174. If in doubt as to whether a crime is reportable
under the Clery Act, call 703-764-5000 and ask to speak to an
officer or the Clery Coordinator for guidance. NOVAs reporting
document is easy to fill out. Be sure to writing down the Who,
What, When, Where, and How in the comments section and being
specific as possible the College Police Department can appropriate
classify the crime as related to the articulated facts surrounding
the situation. Youll be able to do it in less than 5 minutes! Once
your done completing the form please email it immediately to the
Chief of Police at [email protected] or drop it off at the local
college police station or security station at your campus. This
action of submitting it immediately helps with being able to
determine if a timely warning is warranted in keeping others from
being victimized. As a reminder the report may be made anonymously
by either the CSA and or the victim through the CSA. Campus

What Crimes Do CSAs Have to Report? Criminal Crimes All Clery
crimes Such as murder, aggravated assault Hate Crimes Based upon
bias Domestic Violence, Dating Violence, Stalking
Drug/Weapons/Alcohol Arrest Drug/Weapons/Alcohol Referrals The
crimes you learned about in the crimes module that occurred within
the Clery geography you learned about Closed Captioning So, what is
a reportable crime under the Clery Act? Most major violent crimes
are referred to as Clery-reportable crimes as well as hate crimes
and liquor, drugs and weapons arrests and disciplinary referrals.
Some examples of Clery Act Crimes include: Criminal homicide Both
forcible and non-forcible sex offenses Aggravated Assault and
Robbery. Under the Clery Act, hate crimes are classified as a Clery
Act Crime. A victim intentionally selected because of the
perpetrator's bias against: Race Gender Religion Sexual orientation
Ethnicity/ National Origin Disability Is Clery reportable. If bias
motivates a crime, then simple assault, vandalism/destruction of
property, larcenies and intimidation are also Clery-reportable.

Clery Reporting Exemptions Licensed mental health &
pastoral counselors are exempt from reporting NOVA does NOT have
anyone at the College who fulfills this definition Closed
Captioning The Clery Act specifically exempts licensed mental
health and pastoral counselors from CSA reporting requirements only
if they learn of a crime working within the scope of their license
or religious assignments. Once again, let me remind you that any
College employee, upon becoming aware of a Clery-reportable crime,
is obligated to provide this information to the College Police.

Title IX Responsible Employee Not all employees are responsible
employees, they are designated by Title IX coordinator May not be
able to maintain confidentiality of identifying information

incidents which go beyond Clery geography and crimes Clery CSAs All

crimes within NOVAs Clery Geography to the College Police using

Clery geography using the Clery form 105-174 and the form and be

questions as to the role and responsibility of a responsible
