Class of 1964 raises more than $175,000 and plans to continue fundraisingFounders’ Week 2014 saw a huge donation from the class of 1964 as members celebrated their golden anniversary. Years ago, class members decided they wanted to do something big to celebrate 50 years since graduating from college. They decided to raise maybe $50,000 for scholarships.

“We got energetic,” says Dr. Johnny Anthony, a retired Jackson State University music professor from Jackson, Miss. “Being the class that we were, we needed to do more than that.”

They quickly passed $50,000 and then $100,000. The class actually raised more than $175,000 for Rust College by Founders’ 2014.

The level of fundraising was due to his dynamic classmates and their friends, said Dr. Leslie Burl McLemore, former student government association president and retired Jackson State University professor.

The class hopes to have raised $200,000 by 2016, the 150th anniversary of the college’s founding.

“As my classmate Dr. Johnnie Harris Miles says, ‘We don’t ever want to put a period at the end of our fundraising efforts,” says McLemore. “I would say to our fellow Rustites, ‘Catch us if you can.’ We plan to pursue this scholarship until the last one of us is gone on to glory.”

The I.C. Housing Development fund recently donated nearly $900,000 to six Rochester-area agencies and 11 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Rust College received $50,000 from the fund.

“This has evolved from the dream of a few people in the 1960s who stayed the course and who saw through a different lens how to overcome the difficulties of providing quality housing for low-to-moderate income people,” said Dorothy Dobson, former managing director of the apartment complex, and devoted widow of James A. Dobson, the first president of the I.C. Housing Development Fund Co., Inc.

Housing-related projects of the HBCU awardees range from credit counseling, predatory lending and home buyers workshops, to improvement of neighborhoods through development of new single-family homes and rehabbing existing homes and rental properties.

Other recipients are: Howard University, Benedict College, Columbia, S.C.; Coppin State University, Baltimore; Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, N.C.; Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte, N.C.; LeMoyne-Owen College, Memphis, Tenn.; North Carolina A & T State University, Greensboro, N.C.; Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas; Voorhees College, Denmark, S.C.; and Winton-Salem State University, Winston-Salem, N.C.

“One of the last things my husband said to me before he passed,” recalled Dorothy Dobson, “(was) ‘I remember what housing was like for black people when I was growing up in Winston Salem…that’s one of the reasons that I made sure this place (James A. Dobson Apartments) was going to be built because everybody is entitled to decent housing.’

“That mission of I.C. Housing Development Fund Co., Inc. is and still remains the same…that’s what the founders believed in ‘Humanity through Housing,’ their motto,” concluded Dorothy Dobson.

Stampley-Gardner inspires others to fight battlesJoshua Stampley-Gardner is on a mission of a lifetime. The senior English major is striving to get healthier and lose 200 pounds and has been getting a lot of attention in the process.

“I don’t want to be famous,” said the 21-year-old. “I just want God to use me. If this is my form of ministry, I am fine with it.”

This ministry is why Stampley-Gardner chose to go public with his weight-loss efforts. He chronicles his experience on a blog at www.joshuasbattle.com.

And people are noticing. Mearl Purvis and Fox 13 in Memphis introduced Joshua to her audience last week in a five-minute piece at http://www.myfoxmemphis.com/story/27406196/fox13-joshua-stampley-gardner-weight-loss-journey.

Most recently, Joshua heard from First Lady Michelle Obama’s office.

“I received a call that she wanted to offer her support. I was kind of excited. Never in my life did I think I’d get a conference call from the White House.”

I am pleased to report that the University Senate Team reported in the exit conference that they did not find any non-compliance issues in their review of the Rust College. Their report will be presented to the Senate at the Spring Meeting where the Senate will make the final decision on the continued listing of Rust College as a United Methodist related institution.

We appreciate the leadership provided by Dr. Sandra C. Vaughn and staff in preparing our report and the entire campus community for your assistance in this process. The success of our efforts with this review, the SACS review, and the CSWE review is a positive sign of the commitment of the total college community (trustees, faculty, staff, and students), a commitment that makes all of us feel good about our institution.
