A bald eagle nest was discov-ered near Berry Colleges plannedfootball stadium construction sitemid-February.

The nest is located 136 yardsoff the northeastern corner of theCage Center parking lot. Sopho-more Kevin Shepherd reportedthe nest to assistant professor of

    biology Renee Carleton, who said

her rst thought was that it musthave been up at the reservoir.

When Shepherd told Carletonthat the nest was behind the Cageparking lot, Carleton sent her stu-dent researcher to verify that hesaw both eagles sitting on the nesttree.

With two reports, I felt thatwas pretty good evidence, so Iwent out the next day and lookedat the tree, said Carleton. Ididnt see the eagles, but I locatedthe nest.

After that, Carleton talked toLand Resources, they contactedthe Department of Natural Re-sources (DNR) and the local DNR

ofcer came out and looked at thenest. However, his initial impres-sion was that it was a red-tailedhawk nest, Carleton said.

Shepherd said he also thoughtit was a red-tailed hawk nest atrst.

I saw a red-tailed hawk y-ing and thought the nest could

belong to the hawk, Shepherdsaid. So I walked over and sawright below the big nest, the twoeagles were just sitting there on a

limb, screeching. You cant reallyconfuse bald eagles with another

    bird.Photographs taken by a report-

er from The Rome News Tribunenally sealed the deal, accordingto Carleton.

The reporter went out thereand actually photographed themon the nest, Carleton said. Eversince, a lot of people, includ-ing me, have seen them carryingsticks and other nesting materialsto the nest, and Ive actually seenthem working on it.

The lifestyle statement that allfaculty and staff at Shorter Uni-versity will be required to sign hasled to several faculty resigning

from their positions and the plan-ning of another peaceful protest.

The website http://saveour-shorter.com posted that a pro-test of the lifestyle statement isplanned for Wednesday, April18 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. to co-incide with the visit from theSouthern Association of Collegesand Schools (SACS) accreditationteam.

The concern of some faculty, staff, students and alumni is thatShorter University is risking itsaccreditation status with SACS.In 2005, former Shorter CollegePresident Ed Schrader and theShorter Board of Trustees lost a

lawsuit in which they sought toremove Shorters afliation withthe Georgia Baptist Convention(GBC).

The GBC acquired controlover the nomination and seatingof the Shorter Board of Directors. The new college president DonDowless was announced on June1, 2011. In October 2011 Dowlessand the Board of Trustees releasedthe Shorter Lifestyle Plan and an-nounced that all faculty and staffwould be required to sign it.

However CommunicationTechnology Specialist and ShorterAlumnus Steven Hames (C96)said this has changed.

Despite what many believe, accreditation is not necessarilythreatened, Hames said. SACShas said before that just becausethere is a lifestyle statement doesnot mean that Shorter will neces-sarily lose its accreditation.

Hames said in an effort to showthat the statement does affectShorter, a group of alumni underthe banner of Save Our Shorteris planning a protest next weekin conjunction with the SACS re-view of Shorter.

Full impact of the LifestyleStatement on the faculty and staffof Shorter will not be known untilcontracts for the 2012-2013 schoolyear are issued.

The 12th Annual Symposium on StudentScholarship was held Tuesday April 10 for stu-dents to share the diligent research they haveperformed over the course of their studies atBerry.

For the rst time all classes were cancelledto encourage attendance and support fromstudents for what their peers are doing. Chair-man of the Committee of Student ScholarshipAlan Hughes said with the cancellation ofclasses, it will better mirror a true conference.

Given the important relation of studentsworking with professors on research endeav-ors, a day is needed for full recognition,Hughes said.

The presentations covered a variety of aca-demic elds including communication, psy-chology, religion and philosophy, mathemat-ics, biology, government and internationalstudies, marketing and chemistry.

Junior Dana Wengers presentation wastitled Global Perspective and Communitythrough Childrens Book Illustrations. Shesaid she greatly appreciated the chance toshare something she had put so much workinto. Wenger wrote and illustrated a childrens

book sharing experiences of international trav-el to encourage youth to start thinking about

and getting excited to travel in the future.Everyone took the symposium seriously

which showed the respect from the entire cam-pus and community members towards thestudents who had developed the projects andperformed so much research, Wenger said.

Senior Jessica Bryant presented for psy-

chology with her extensive research on theWomens Ku Klux Klan.

My paper intended to provide more in-formation on the history of the group becausemany people never even knew it existed in the1920s, Bryant said.

Bryant said being able to participate in thesymposium is the pinnacle for research withthe opportunity to share it at the event.

Senior Caitlin Million presented on onepiece of the triad of autism which specicallyfocused on the restrictive and repetitive be-haviors. While performing her research over atwo-year period, she studied potential genderdifferences in that single piece of the triad.

It was really enjoyable to present to a largeaudience that was interdisciplinary and di-verse, Million said.

Hughes said that research is the ultimateform of teaching. By providing this confer-ence-like event for the students to showcasetheir hard work and dedicated efforts, Berrywas able to celebrate what the students haveaccomplished.

Hopefully students will become awareof the possibilities and benets of researchthrough attending and listening to others atthe symposium, Hughes said.

Over the course of nine sessions, from 9a.m. to 3:15 p.m., there were dozens of stu-dents who shared their ndings with the cam-

    pus and community.

The Student Symposium Tuesday fea-tured presentations and poster displays fromindividual students and groups. This is thefrst year classes were canceled to encourageattendance.

There is much more on Harry Musselwhites

mind than music.Senior Lecturer of Music Harry Musselwhite

said the musical depiction of a wanderers lastmoments on earth inspired his award-winningscreenplay.,Der Greis (The Old Man). The 2010short lm written, produced and directed by Mus -selwhite is based on a choral piece of the same name

by Franz Joseph Haydn.Harry Musselwhite is Executive Director of the

Rome International Film Festival (US) and Direc-tor of Choral Studies at Berry College. Musselwhitehas performed as a soloist extensively in the UnitedKingdom. He has been featured in solo recitals at TheHolborne Museum in Bath, and in two invited recit-als at St. Jamess at Piccadilly in London. He has per-formed as bass soloist in oratorio extensively withThe Virtuosi of London Orchestra at Wells Cathedraland in several important London Venues.

Musselwhite is in constant demand as a choralclinician and adjudicator, having judged through-out the region. He has delivered clinics at The Geor-gia Music Educators Conference in Savannah, TheMENC Eastern Division Conference in New YorkCity, and has been an honor choir director at numer-ous events in Georgia and Tennessee. He has been aprofessional choral adjudicator with The SouthernStar Music Festival for over fteen years.

Another member of the Berry College commu-nity, Associate Professor of Theatre John Country-man, starred in the lm, as the wanderer, and Berryalumna (C 09) Lindsey Ricketson played his muse. The lm was shot in its entirety in one day on a bridgein Rome, Ga. The Berry Singers recorded Haydnspiece to provide the soundtrack for the lm. WhereI can, I try to incorporate Berry students and facultyand facilities in my lmmaking because Berry isvery special to me, Musselwhite said.

Der Greis went on to be screened at the Albu-querque Film Festival and Macon Film Festival. In

January, the 2012 Winter Shorts Film Festival hon-ored the lm with a jury award for outstandingmusical score for the Berry Singers soundtrack.I love to win awards! Musselwhite said. I was

thrilled. My rst lm was Martha Berry. It took me sixyears to nish, Musselwhite said. Martha Berrywas a semi-nalist in 2008 with Hollywoods KairosPrize for the Most Spiritually Uplifting Screenplay. In 2011, the lm was a nalist in the Dixie Film Fes-tival, and it is a nalist this year in the CharlestonInternational Film Festival.

Unfortunately for Hollywood, nothing blowsup, and there are no robots in the story of MarthaBerry, Musselwhite said. As you well know, Mar-tha Berry is an incredible story, and there are a num-

ber of us that feel it needs to be told on the screen. And if we can just nd the right, receptive producerand director and star to package it, were working sohard on making this happen.

Heavenly, another screenplay written by Mus-selwhite, is a semi-nalist in the 2012 Spirit QuestFilm Festival.

Recently Musselwhite completed a post-apoca-lyptic western lm, Next of Kin. Musselwhite isthe writer, producer, director and star of the lm,which has been screened at the Macon Film Festivaland Atlantas Get Connected lm event.

Musselwhite is also currently working on twofull-length feature lms. He is writing a horror scriptwith a producer in Los Angeles, Calif. and produc-tion is nearly underway for a musical. Casting forthe musical is to begin this summer. I become almmaker during the summer. I take off my musichat and put on my lmmaker hat, Musselwhitesaid.

My goal is to be a professional screenwriter soI write screenplays. But Im also a regular columnistfor the Rome News-Tribune, and I have a childrens

book coming out in the next thirty days, he said.I love words; I love literature, and I love to write.

Hard work, but I like to write.
