Our final talk; the Maths that can stop the Apocalypsewas an intriguing look into AI (arficial intelligence) and its potenal for good, and evil. There were also many stalls set up from various exhibitors including The Bloodhound Carwhich is aempng to break the land speed record of 1000 mph and the European Space Agency which gave us a live demonstraon of their latest rover which will be sent to Mars in 2020. As well as this, there were interacve exhibits, like that set up by the Royal College of Medicine which was an outbreak simulaon of how quickly a hypothecal virus, released at the beginning of the day at the ExCel Centre, could spread. There was so much more, including great eateries (I can personally recommend the Sushi bar..). The day was posively received by the students who were grateful for this rare opportunity. The English Department Celebrated National Poetry Day!

“Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words” Robert Frost

The reading and writing of poetry can sometimes be dismissed and at times undervalued, particularly when compared to the reading and writing of novels and short stories, and even more so when the other option is playing Xbox or going on a phone. However, National Poetry Day was an opportunity for students at The Campion School to reconnect with a literary form that has so many profound joys and benefits. Thursday the 4th of October was National Poetry Day and the English Department celebrated by taking the time to read a collection of poems in lessons and encouraging students to try their hand at writing their own poems. For students, this was an exciting opportunity to explore using a range of techniques and language features that they have analysed in other writer’s works. As Rita Dove put it, “poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.” By giving students the opportunity to pen their own poems they were able to discover the richness of language for themselves. Students were able to construct language to express their thoughts, feelings, ideas and perspectives. The English Department encourages everyone to read poetry and discover the wonder for yourself. If you are unsure of where to start here are some of the English Department’s favourites: Mr Dwyer – ‘On Raglan Road’ by Patrick Kavanagh Miss Thompson – ‘A Song of Hope’ by Oodgeroo Noonuccal Mr Virdee – ‘The Sick Rose’ by William Blake Ms Biviano – ‘The Raven’ by Edgar Allan Poe Mrs Lynch – ‘Still I Rise’ by Maya Angelou

Secondary School A favourite class in school Has got to be maths, Not knowing the tables, You’ll be called a psychopath! Another has got to be science With bodies and bits of lead, Spill a flask then tell a teacher Or you will end up dead! You’ve got to learn your literacy Or you’ll find you’re in detention, Do your homework, act well and, I advise you pay attention! Liked a lot you’ve got PE Press-ups, exercise and being athletic, Make wrong moves and you will see, Your stuck in medical with a spoon of anaesthetic! This is secondary school in a poem Listen and don’t break the rules, Or you’ll end up in summer school, With all the fools! By Charlie Crick

VOMITING AND DIARRHOEA

I would like to remind Parents/Carers that students need to be clear of symptoms for 48 hours if they are suffering with sickness and diarrhoea. For one illness on its own then they need to be clear for 24 hours. I would ask that if your son/daughter is unwell in the morning and is too unwell for school, they stay at home. Recently there has been an increase in the number of students coming into school unwell and having to go home within the first hour of school. This can obviously add to the spread of virus around school. Mrs T Kennett Pupil Welfare Officer

What is abuse?: A form of maltreatment of a child. Somebody may abuse or neglect a child by inflicting harm or by failing to act to prevent harm. Children may be abused in a family or in an institutional or community setting by those known to them or, more rarely, by others. Abuse can take place wholly online, or technology may be used to facilitate offline abuse. They may be abused by an adult or adults or by another child or children.
