CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 2, Week 5, 18th May 2017

Camperdown

Congratulations to Year 11 student Lauren McIlveen who has had a busy fortnight and made a strong impression! Lauren successfully applied to participate in two exciting opportunities which were advertised through the school. As part of the Rural Ambassador’s program, Lauren spent three days in Melbourne with twenty rural youth from across the state. A motivational speaker set the ground work for the students to develop a plan of action for the rest of the year. Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,

aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.

From the Principal’s Desk…

Our Parents & Friends Association has

been extremely busy so far this year, as

you can see in the accompanying

articles and photos. We are always on

the look out for new parents to join our

hard-working team of volunteers and

any contribution that you are able to

make would be greatly appreciated.

After seeing the Junior Campus

playground and cubby projects through to completion,

Parents & Friends’ attention has now turned to fundraising

for new audio visual equipment for the AG Daws Hall,

including an inbuilt projector and automated screen for the

stage. These improvements will lead to greatly improved

functionality and aesthetics in the hall, significantly

enhancing production options for school and hired events.

Work on our Corangamite Trade Skills Centre Hairdressing

and Beauty facility is coming to a close and we look

forward to being able to show students and families through

this new space next week at the Year 7 Information Night.

The construction of the TSC facilities at our partner schools

Derrinallum, Terang and Cobden is also on track and it is

wonderful to see this project coming to fruition after many

years of planning and collaboration.

On behalf of the Camperdown College community I would

like to acknowledge the significant contribution of Food

Technology teacher Mrs Julie McPhee, who has formally

announced her retirement. In making the decision to move

on from teaching after 38 years, Julie leaves with many

happy and fond memories of her time at Camperdown

College. Julie’s contribution to the development of

students’ skills and passions in the food area will be long

remembered.

Education Week celebrations from Monday 22nd – Friday

26th May will give students and staff the opportunity to

showcase Camperdown College programs and facilities to

the wider community. Our Junior Campus

Grandparents/Special Friends Day and Senior Campus

Year 7 Information Night will both be held on Wednesday

24th May. The Education Week them of Healthy Mind,

Healthy Body will underpin an exciting program of

activities at each campus and we hope to see many parents

and visitors coming through the school to celebrate with

our students and staff.

Year 9 Grampians Camp: I had the pleasure of welcoming the Year 9 students back from their Grampians camp last week and talking to the

students about their experience until parents arrived to pick them up. Students were very positive about the activities

that they participated in and the three hikes that they completed. However, what stood out most for me was that as

every student departed they thanked all the staff for providing this experience. It is so pleasing to see such

wonderful manners and when I mentioned this to the staff they commented that the bus driver who remained on

camp with the students for the three days said that they were the most well-mannered bunch of students he had taken

on camp this year! Thanks to Miss Bloomfield for organising the camp and to her and Miss McLennan, Kathryn

Robertson and Ryan Smith for attending.

Year 10 Melbourne Discovery Camp:

The city of Melbourne was the venue for the Year 10 camp. Students managed to navigate their way around the transport system and

find their way to three different suburbs in small groups. The students visited Swinburne University, the Melbourne Star, The Age

Careers Expo and completed a Salvation Army city tour. A highlight was ice-skating, attending the musical Aladdin and completing a

career activity behind the scenes at the Melbourne Aquarium. Thank you to Miss Jubb for organising the camp and to Mrs Maskell

and Ms Crowle for accompanying the students on this camp.

Year 7 Information Night:

Next Wednesday evening we will be hosting our Year 7 Information Night. We are looking forward to showcasing all that the Senior

Campus has to offer. Many students have been asked by staff to help out on the night. Permission forms have been sent home with

these students today.

Regional Indonesian Public Speaking Competition:

Tim Fagan and Cain Hope recently competed in Sayembora Lisan (Indonesian Public Speaking Competition) via Polycom last week.

Students read a prepared story and conversed with judges in Indonesian. The students are to be commended for the effort they put into

preparing for the competition and confidence that they exhibited on the day. Congratulations to Tim who has made it through to the

next level of judging to be conducted in Melbourne later in the term.

Dirt Bike Challenge: Congratulations to Jack Hughes who won the B grade section of the interschool dirt bike challenge that was held at Panmure last

week.

Deb Ball:

Excitement is looming with the Year 10/11 students who have received their first lot of information about the Deb Ball on Friday 1st

September. Many arrangements have been put in place and we are looking forward to this wonderful event. Expressions of interest

from Year 2/3 students to carry out the role of pageboy and flower girl will be called for early next term via the newsletter.

Free Dental Screening:

South West Health Care Dental is offering free dental screening for all students up to twelve years of age and those students who are

thirteen plus who hold a current health care card. Further information about this and permission forms have been sent home with

students.

Congratulations:

To students Lachie Bennett, Ian Wilkinson and Stacey James who starred in the recent Camperdown Theatre company

production of Seussical the Musical.

To Bailey McDonald and James O’Neil who represented Camperdown Football Netball Club in the Hampden League

interleague carnival on the weekend. James played in the green team and Bailey in the white and they played against each

other in the grand final with Hampden White taking out the honours.

Senior Campus Assistant Principal

Indonesian Speaking Competition:

Last week Nia Shaw, Perrie Winsall and Eagan Winsall participated in regional Indonesian speaking competition via

Polycom. Part of the assessment was reading an Indonesian text and responding orally to various questions.

Congratulations to all three students who have progressed through to the state final in Melbourne, later in the year.

Bu Jenna, Suci, staff and students are extremely proud of your efforts.

NAPLAN:

Congratulations to the Year 3 and 5 students who completed NAPLAN testing last week. NAPLAN gives us

interesting information, however it is not a complete assessment of student success, knowledge and skills. The testing sometimes

covers areas of the curriculum that are planned for teaching later in the year and sometimes students find the formal presentation of

the testing confronting. We are pleased with their efforts. Reports on each student’s achievements in these tests will be provided to

parents later in the year.

Special Welcome:

This week we have welcomed another two new students to our Camperdown College community! We welcome Jayden Tobias (Year

1) and Derek MacRae (Year 5). We are delighted to have them join our Junior Campus and wish them a long and successful

educational journey.

Education Week:

Education Week commences on Monday. The theme for 2017 is Healthy Minds, Healthy Body. On Wednesday morning 24th May, we

invite all grandparents/special friends to attend our open morning, join the students in their classrooms and share some morning tea

with our dedicated staff. Throughout the week, all classes will be participating in numerous activities, including yoga sessions with

Ali Irish, dance sessions with Kate Attrill and first aid workshops provided by St Johns.

Our Year 7 Information Night will be held on Wednesday night from 7pm – 9pm and current and prospective students are encouraged

to attend. Although 2018 is still many months away, we are already thinking about the next school year. If you know of a family who

may be planning to send their child to our school, please encourage them to make contact with the office to book a tour of the College.

District Cross Country:

Congratulations to our Cross Country team who competed at the District Carnival in Noorat on Friday. They competed against other

students from Simpson, Timboon, Terang, Noorat, Camperdown and Mortlake. Our students competed with enthusiasm, offering

encouragement as individuals ran around the course. Well done to Ruby Kempton, Stella Horspole and Dylan Robertson who have

progressed through to divisional level next week in Warrnambool.

VSSS Rehearsals:

Our VSSS team have been perfecting their dance moves under the guidance of Annette Timilsina during lunchtime rehearsals. Our

team will travel to Colac Primary School this Friday for another district rehearsal.

Dental Screenings:

All students will have the opportunity to access free dental screenings over the coming weeks with a dental therapist. An information

letter regarding these screenings has been sent home to all families.

On Friday 12th May, the Junior Campus sent 45 students to Noorat for the annual

District Cross Country Carnival. All students did their best all day and we were proud

to announce that three students have advanced to the next stage in Warrnambool on

Friday 26th May.

Ruby Kempton, Dylan Robertson and Stella Horspole will be running a new course set

around the Deakin University golf course. It is a great opportunity for them to run

against the best runners from the combined Hamilton, Portland and Warrnambool

divisions. Best of luck to our runners, I am sure they will make us proud.

Junior Campus students gave their all at the

recent District Cross Country Carnival.

On Wednesday 10th May, the Senior Campus held their Cross Country at the

Frederick Street Sporting Complex. It was a gorgeous afternoon, the sun was

shining, which allowed for some great performances from students. It was also

pleasing to see the number of students who demonstrated excellent

sportsmanship skills on the day encouraging their peers across the finishing

line.

Special mention must go to our age group champions:

Junior: Eve Britton and Declan Tickner

Intermediate: Olivia Henzen and Jack Helmore

Senior: Nick Jones and Sophie Sumner

The winning house for this year’s cross country was Manifold who received a

score of 153 for the day. Well done to all students who participated on the day,

it was great to see everyone having a go. We have a number of students that

have progressed to the next level and will represent Camperdown College at

the interschool cross country tomorrow, Friday 19th May at Frederick Street

from 1pm. Thank you to all staff that helped out on the day and good luck to

those students competing tomorrow.

Hands On Learning (HOL) students have been busy making 100 whisper phones for students in Prep – Year 2. The whisper phones will be used for students to be able to hear themselves when reading. It will help create less classroom noise to allow the students the ability to concentrate better. HOL students enjoyed the chance to give something to the younger students in the College.

MMuussiicc NNeewwss Music Workshop with Kristin Rule:

Last Friday our junior and senior instrumental music students and guitar students

were fortunate to attend a music technology workshop and performance with

Kristin Rule, a cellist, composer and filmmaker who happens to be riding her

bike through South West Victoria in the Junior Campus Library. Kristin’s music

will be featured in the opening film at this year’s Sydney Film Festival.

Kristin showed students how to make sound effects for film on her cello. She

then recorded them on her cello microphone and demonstrated playing them

through her loop pedal, and arranged these loops on her laptop. Kristin showed

students some film images to give them some ideas for making a scary, spooky

piece of music. Students then got to make some scary sound effects on their

instruments which Kristin recorded and then arranged on her lap top, so that the

sounds would go in sequence with the images on the television screen. Students

finished the piece by recording a scary group primal scream!

The workshop gave our music students lots of new ideas on how to use their creativity to explore the sounds of their instruments and

voices, and was a great introduction to the endless possibilities of music technology. Kristin recommended the app called Loopy for

students interested in exploring looping.

Orchestra Victoria Music Camp:

Jordan Watson had a wonderful opportunity in the April school holidays to attend a free three day music camp with the Orchestra

Victoria in Hamilton which is part of Orchestra Victoria’s MoOVe regional program that supports young musicians. Each day Jordan

caught a mini bus from Mortlake with ten other local music students. In the mornings Jordan attended a tutorial with the Second

Violins and was mentored by the Orchestra Victoria Second Violinist, Maura. This was followed by a full orchestra rehearsal until

lunchtime.

After lunch each day, Jordan went to see lunchtime concerts performed by musicians from Orchestra Victoria. His favourite concert

was with a violin, flute and harp trio who performed at the Hamilton Art Gallery. In the afternoons, Jordan rehearsed with the

orchestra until 5pm. On the third day, the students performed with Orchestra Victoria at the Music Camp Concert. Students learnt nine

pieces in three days and Jordan’s favourite piece was called Lord of the Dance.

Jordan enjoyed listening to the flutes and the harp and said he found it amazing to be part of something so big. He said it was an

amazing feeling to play in a big orchestra and is looking forward to going to next year’s Orchestra Victoria’s MoOVe Music Camp.

Terang Nexus Concert:

Some of our violin students will be performing at the Terang Nexus Concert this Friday 19 th May at 7.30pm at the Terang Civic Hall

with other string students from other Corangamite schools. Students need to wear full school uniform and arrive by 7pm for tuning in

the Rose Room. Performers are free and Adults are $10; Children $5 and Families $20.

On Friday 5th May, we ventured down to the Camperdown and

District Historical Society. We began our session by discussing

the traditional owners of our land, the Djargurd Wurrung

people. We also learnt about Wombeech Puyuum (also known

as Camperdown George). Next we looked at the Aboriginal

artefacts, we loved hear about the purposes they served and

being able to touch them.

We got time at the end of our session to explore some of the

other interesting artefacts from our community, including war

medals, typewriters and looking at historical photos from our

community. Here’s what we thought…

I liked the typewriter. Jordan Kempton.

The fact is I loved it because there was a lot of interesting

things. Darcy Cross.

I loved all the tools we got to look at. Tulin Meric.

On Thursday 20th April, Year 3/4 students walked to

our local RSL and met Alan Fleming. Alan showed us a

video that related to ANZAC day along with extensive

photos, articles, medals, uniforms and memorabilia

from WW1, WW2 and the Vietnam War.

I loved watching the video because it has lots of

pictures that related to the war. Sadie Walsh.

I enjoyed everything because I hadn’t had the

experience of the Army and ANZAC Day so I learnt

heaps. Oliver Clark.

I liked learning things about the War and how they

survived during that time. I found it interesting

looking at the armour and clothing they wore

during the war. Xavier Warren.

Last Friday 12th May, our Year 10 students

attended a TAFE Taster Day generously

organised by WestVic Staffing Solutions.

The students participated in a range of

different hands on learning experiences

across the two South West TAFE

campuses in Warrnambool. These included

workshops on Landcare & Conservation,

Building, Multi Media and Allied Health.

This was a fantastic day that gave our

participants an insight into industry

From Wednesday 3rd May through to Friday 5th May, the Year 9

students attended camp in Halls Gap. This particular camp was

a Duke of Edinburgh based camp in order to help students

achieve their bronze award. Students were required to organise

and prepare most of their own food for the three day camp,

including a meal for one night which they needed to cook on the

trangias.

On arrival, students demonstrated their ability to set up their

tents. They did a fantastic job of this as all tents managed to

withstand the cold conditions and keep everyone nice and dry

for the three days. On the first day we travelled to Mackenzie’s

Falls for our afternoon activity, and returned with plenty of

daylight so students could prepare their evening meal. Day two

saw students split into two groups to complete their hikes. One

group trekked to Boronia Peak, whilst the other group

completed the Pinnacle climb. Both hikes were quite physically

challenging but students handled them exceptionally well with

minimal complaints. The students returned that night to a

delicious barbeque that was cooked by the teachers. On our

final day, the wakeup call was at 6.15am in order to ensure there

was enough time to fit both hikes in before departing Halls Gap

for home. Student’s completed their second hike like champions

allowing for plenty of time to pack up camp and head across to

town for a nice warm lunch before our departure back to school.

Students should be commended for their exceptional behaviour

that made for an enjoyable and rewarding camp. A big thank

you to the staff who attended the camp and to Rod the bus

driver.

CCaammppeerrddoowwnn CCoolllleeggee PPoolliicciieess As part of the regular cycle of policy review, School Council is presently reviewing the Student Engagement and Inclusion policy

and would welcome your feedback. You will find the full policy on the College website (www.camperdowncoll.vic.edu.au) and

also our Skoolbag App or it can be collected from either campus office and we have included the attendance component in full

below as your feedback about this particular component of our school policy and procedures would be particularly appreciated.

Attendance:

The College will promote the motto ‘It’s Not OK To Be Away’ and encourage all students to attend school every day.

Parents will be required to communicate absences to the office via a note or telephone call.

The College will provide same-day follow up of unexplained absences.

In addition to attendance statements on end of semester reports, absence reports will be generated for students at both

campuses when agreed trigger points are reached.

The Senior Campus attendance policy will specify 90% as the minimum attendance requirement for satisfactory

completion of a subject. Families will be informed if attendance falls below the minimum requirement after week six of

each term.

VCE students absent for a School Assessed Coursework task will be required to supply a medical certificate.

Regular attendance will be recognised and celebrated through the Junior Campus weekly class attendance award and

end of semester certificates to recognise high levels of attendance for students at both campuses.

The College will enforce and communicate protocols to encourage punctuality to school and to each class, including a

start-of-day lateness process at the Senior Campus.

Where a student is not attending school regularly and punctually, the Assistant Principal and Wellbeing staff will work

closely with the student and his/her family. Attendance plans will be established for students with an unacceptable level

of attendance.

You are welcome to read the policy and contribute feedback by either writing it onto the document and returning it to either campus

office, or by emailing your feedback to ([email protected]) with the policy name as the subject. The Policy sub-

committee will collect and consider all feedback prior to making recommendations to School Council.

Please submit your feedback by the end of May.

During our Learning Cycle of Narrative Writing, we have been using the Seven Steps to

Writing Success approach to chunk the components of a strong narrative. One of the

steps is Sizzling Starts. We teach students to start at a moment of action or excitement to

engage the reader.

Year 6 students used the talent quest The Voice to write sizzling starts about the moment

the entrant walks on stage for their audition. Read are some of our students’ starts and

see if you are hooked!

The stage is cold, the crowd is loud, the judges are waiting. I have sweat on my forehead. I am as stiff as an ice block. I try to move

forwards but my body wants to go back. I fight it but I still can’t move. The lights are blinding. Taking one small step at a time, I am

trying to tell my body “It’s ok; just move forward.” I reach for the microphone, look up and see more than one thousand eyes on me.

My body goes stiff again, my forehead is drenched. I wait for the music.

Two minutes to go. My heart is pounding. Now I’m starting to regret my decision. Thirty seconds to go. Now I’m really starting to

panic. It’s my turn to sing. Sweat is rolling down my forehead and my hands are sticky. I’m standing in the pitch black at the

microphone. I freeze. I have completely forgotten the first verse. The crowd is getting restless. What am I going to do?

The door slides open slowly. I start to sweat all over. I walk slowly to the mic. I feel eyes looking at me from every direction and I

have butterflies in my stomach. There’s an ache in my throat like a beast scratching it from the inside.

My heart is pounding out of my chest. The wide double door is opening. I fear many things; the main one being

forgetting the lyrics. My t-shirt is sticking to my skin and I can’t see through the glare of the huge lights. I step

out onto the stage and walk slowly to the microphone.

I watch as the bulky doors swing wide open, revealing a wide stage with a lonely microphone. I feel

someone shove me forward. “Go!” I think. I start to ascend the steps. When I reach the last step it hooks

on my foot. I fall flat on my face. I hear the gasps of the crowd as I slowly get up, ignoring the pain. My

heart is thumping as the microphone draws closer.

At Camperdown College, most students come to school regularly and as a result are making good progress in their learning. This is an expectation and a right that we would like to see enacted for every student.

We know that coming to school on time, every day is a necessary condition for learning to occur. Students who attend school every day benefit from all of the support and teacher assistance that is available, and are much more likely to go ahead in their learning. Parents/guardians are responsible for making sure that all children attend school every day unless they are too unwell, in which case the school must be advised.

Being ready to begin the day’s learning with the rest of the class is also very important and we ask for your support in ensuring that Junior Campus students are in their classes by 8.50am, and Senior Campus students by 9am. A good start lays the foundation for a great day of learning!

At Camperdown College we also expect full student attendance and participation in camps, excursions and sports days. This is an important part of building strong relationships, fulfilling responsibilities to others, and building skills and resilience. Parent support for these expectations is very influential and your reinforcement of these key messages is invaluable.
