Sunday Star Times (SST) on Classroom Design

The front page of the SST yesterday had a headline that told readers that

schools rated ‘open plan barn’ classes a fail. Given the reference to ‘open plan

barns’ I can only assume the article was not referring to the modern learning

environment (MLE) building we have that was opened by the Prime Minister in

August this year, as our building is anything but a ‘barn.’ Hence I will make no

further reference to the aforementioned article other than to use it as a catalyst

for reminding our community of the educational rationale that underpins the

teaching and learning programmes in place in our MLE.

As soon as the planning process commenced with the Ministry of Education we

engaged in an increasingly intensive professional development process, using

outside providers who worked with the leadership team and with teachers to

ensure that we would make the best possible use of the building that we very

much helped design (in terms of the educational aspects) from the very start of

the process. The result is a building that meets the needs of those who work in

the MLE. All our year five and six students have a ‘home base teacher’ who is

responsible for their teaching and learning programmes making the best use of

the human and technological resources available to them. One of the many

positive aspects of our MLE is that it provides learning environments for all.

There is space for those who need to collaborate and work with others while

there is also space for those who require quiet and privacy. Such flexibility is not

available in the traditional ‘single cell classroom.’

Since we started using the MLE we have

held over ten seminars for parents and

caregivers of students in years four, five and

six. These seminars have culminated in

tours of the MLE while students have been

working. As with our single cell classrooms

we would never suggest we have got it

100% right all the time. Teething issues

have been identified and addressed as they

have arisen. However, given our on-going monitoring of these new teaching and

learning spaces we are quietly confident that we are providing education for our

students that is preparing them to become citizens in an increasingly

interconnected world. Quiet is an opportune word as many parents who have

taken part in the seminars/tours have commented on the quietness of the MLE

environment; this is the quietness of students being engaged in working under

the guidance of teachers who know what they are doing. We are proud that our

MLE is helping our vision - Growing learners for life who strive for excellence.

Reminders

This is a 'hat term.' Please ensure your child has their named school hat at school every day.

For the sake of safety we ask that you inform us ahead of time if your child is not going to be at school. Please use either the designated telephone number (410 9551) or the absence option on the tiqbiz school app. Haven't downloaded the app yet? Please see below how to do this. The app is an important communication tool.

Jump Rope for Heart

Your children should have bought home a Jump Rope for Heart pamphlet and

fundraising envelope. Please read the pamphlet and talk with your child/ren

about their skipping goal/s.

Our Skip-a-thon days are Thursday 22 October and Friday 23 October this

week.

Thanks. Sandra Stott and Room 21

Everything is (Almost) Ka Pai

The morning bus bay regime is working very well. Given the sheer volume of

vehicles entering and exiting the bus bus bay, traffic flows well most of the time.

There will always be a queue to enter the bus bay when the volume of vehicles

is greater than the ability of the bus bay to cope. However, the queues have

been noticeably shorter and less frequent since the introduction of the ‘stop,

drop and go’ regime so thank you for the co-operation of the vast majority of

parent and caregivers. Please remember, the bus bay drop off in the morning is

only for children who are sufficiently independent to get out of the vehicle by

themselves and make their way into school.

Hi my name in Elli Dudding and I

have just started at Campbells

Bay School as a new entrant

along with my twin sister Sasha.

I was born with (Spastic Dystonic

Quadriplegic) Cerebral Palsy,

which basically means that all my

muscles in my body do not work

like yours.

This affects my hands, legs and

even the way I talk, but if you are

patient and listen carefully, you

will understand me.

I have to do a lot of exercises

and therapy to make my muscles

move like they should.

I can walk with my walking frame

short distances with help, but

most of the time you will see me

in my wheelchair.

I love music, dancing, animals

and having fun.

I am very social, have a great

sense of humour and I’m a bit

cheeky!

I am like every other five year

old, but I just need a little bit

more help.

Thanks for taking the time to

read this and understand a little

about me, I look forward to

meeting you.

From Elli and her family.

FOCBS LADIES MOVIE NIGHT 22 OCTOBER

Due to slow sales, we have moved to a smaller

theatre so there are no longer tickets available for

The Dressmaker movie. If you have already

purchased tickets, we look forward to seeing you

there and thank you for your support. More chance of

winning a spot prize now....!

FRIENDS OF CAMPBELLS BAY SCHOOL: NEW MEETING

DATE

As the movie will clash with the FOCBS meeting we

have changed the date and time as follows to: 2.00pm Wednesday 21

October in the school’s staffroom. We look forward to seeing as many people at

the meeting as possible to discuss planning to support the end of year concerts.

Student Successes

In the school holidays Maz Christopherson (Room

30) and his team East Coast Bays Daw, won the

11th grade Gold Coast Champions Cup!

They beat Melbourne in the final. This is a massive achievement to go over

there and win against top teams from Aussie and NZ in a week long

tournament.

William Hays (Room 5G) came third in the under 24kg junior boys section at the

New Zealand National Judo Champs in Mt Maunganui yesterday.

William narrowly missed gold when he lost in the last second of his 2 minute

match to the boy who had beaten him the last 2 seconds in the North Island

Champs and who went on to get the gold medal.

To get bronze he had to beat the top boy in the South Island Champs who

missed his first match because times for the matches were brought forward

while he was out with his father who was buying coffee.

So mixed emotions for William who came so close to getting first but who still

performed extremely well this morning.

Full S.T.E.A.M Ahead

Last week the co-ordinators of the Science, technology, engineering, art and maths (S.T.E.A.M) extension groups spent

days working through the assessments in order to create the extension groups. The children that were successful

received a letter on Friday.

Below is a message from the co-coordinators.

Dear Parents,

Mike and I will be delivering Robotics, Construction and Stop Motion workshops on behalf of RoboClub at Campbells Bay

School Term 4. We have been overwhelmed with over 200 children wanting to attend our programmes. Each assessment

has been personally sifted through by either Mike or myself. The creativity and hunger to be one of the selected few has

been exceptionally high and caused quite a few sleepless nights.

For those that have been successful we are both looking forward to teaching you next week. It’s going to be great fun.

Unfortunately, there will be some very disappointed children out there. To these children I say keep building, keep

creating, keep your passion alight. There are a few providers around Auckland not just RoboClub, consider joining one of

the great holiday programmes out there and stretch understanding.

Kevin Alexander & Mike Jones (Building Young Minds)

While I was not a part of the process in assessing or making of the groups, I did visit the children when they were doing

the assessment. I was impressed and amazed at how dedicated and excited the large number of children were about this

task. It made me think that engineering, robotics, coding and animation is a growing component of our curriculum. So

while we only had 64 places this year for the extension groups, the leadership team will be busy thinking about ways in

which to integrate this area in the curriculum for all students. So watch this space.

Below is information about the lunch time club that you can pay for your child to join in with.

School Security

We will reintroduce the locking of the gate overnight from the bus bay to the parking areas. We used to do this every

night. However, with the advent of the construction of the new building and the coming and going of people associated

with this project we stopped locking the gate. Now the construction work is finished, apart from some minor cabling work,

from tomorrow evening we will lock the gate every day. This gate will be locked by SKIDS after their last child has left.

This is around about 6.00 pm but might be before or after this time. Please note that parking in the school car parks is for

staff members only.
