Interested in being a rollergirl? Or just want to learn more about how you might fit into the Rink Minx family (per-haps as a ref, a volunteer, or maybe just a fan)?

The Minx are hav-ing a recruitment day at Strathcona Gardens on August 10 from 2-4.

What about if you

haven’t skated in years or at all?

Most of Rink Minx started that way as well. While prior skating or other athletic experience is certainly encouraged, it is not required of any type of team member, especially those who see themselves playing a more supporting role

in the league. If you are committed to dedicat-ing the time, you will be shown the tools to train yourself into a roller ath-lete.

The Rink Minx is a team inclusive of women of all sizes, ages and backgrounds. You must be 18 or older to skate with the team, however,

they welcome volunteers and non-skating officials of all ages.

While all playing skat-ers are women only, there are lots of opportunities for men too. For more information, look for them on Facebook, Twit-ter @RinkMinx, and by e-mail at [email protected].

While camping at Fry Lake July 31, Kasen Broderick, Jacob Hicks, Elli Broderick, Blake Rauser and Linden Hicks (from left, above) who had been riding around the three campsites, saw a group of people leave. They decided to ride down to where the campsites to see if they left any firewood. They came back asking for gloves and gar-bage bags as they were so disgusted with all the garbage that was left behind by adults. The kids picked up four garbage bags full of garbage because they were scared of los-ing their summer “home” and the wonderful memories they create.

from our blasting operation will not be a problem,” Marshall said at the June 24 council meeting. “BC Hydro has placed very stringent vibration criteria on adjacent structures closer to the blast area than the existing city of Campbell River infrastructure.

“Seismographs will be set up for each blast to measure and ensure the vibration levels will not be exceeded.”

Council also gave approval for a variance to the city’s construction noise regulations, which permit construction noise from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays and statutory holidays.

The variance will allow crews to load and remove excavated material from the underground tunnel off-site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Marshall told council that rock will be transported during both dayshift and nightshift and it’s antici-pated that six to eight trucks per hour, on both shifts, will be hauling from the site.

The trucks will leave the project site via the road to the city’s water treatment facility off of Highway 28 and will use Highway 19 and Highway 28 to access two material drop-off sites, one north of the generat-ing station at Middle Point and the other a gravel pit off Willis Road.

Blasting and hauling is expected to continue until Oct. 1.

In addition to a new underground tunnel, the $1 billion John Hart re-construction project involves construction of a new powerhouse, turbine and gen-erator installation in the new powerhouse as well as mechanical and electrical work.

The project is expected to last for five years.

Very few people have not been affected, in some way or another, by chronic illnesses.

Some take a proactive approach to change, be it through donating to a cause, or volunteering for a special fundraising effort.

Jaquelyn Janzen has taken her proactive approach to the battle against multiple sclero-sis and lupus one step further. Make that half a million steps.

On Friday, the 25-year-old Black Creek native embarked on her “Embrace the Race” journey. She is running the length of Vancouver Island. From July 31 to Aug. 16, Janzen will run the equivalent of 12 full marathons – one per day, with five rest days along the way – in hopes of raising $50,000 to go towards MS and lupus research.

Only 1 previous marathon

Janzen, who has only been running for a

couple of years, came up with the idea while training for the 2013

GoodLife Fitness Vic-toria Marathon – her first-ever marathon, and

only official one she has ever run.

“I was out running one

day, in training for Vic-toria, and I realized how much I just love run-ning, and thought there should be a purpose for me doing it – to use this for the good of some-thing,” she said.

Personal connection

“My dad has MS and a good friend of mine has lupus and they are both very, very important people to me. Watching them struggle with these diseases has really just opened my eyes as to how much people with chronic illnesses have to persevere really every day of their lives. This is just a way I felt I could show them how much I care for them, and a way I could show them some support.”

Spot her on the highway

She will do all her running during the challenge along the highways of Vancouver Island. She will travel along Highway 19 from Port Hardy all the way to Parksville. At that point, she will move

onto the inland highway (19A) as far as Mill Bay, before taking the Mill Bay-to-Brentwood Bay ferry across to Victoria.

“We decided run-ning the Malahat on a summer Saturday is probably not the safest idea, so we will catch the ferry, then run through Victoria,“ she said.

Passing through Campbell River

Janzen will run through Campbell River on Aug. 7, during her sixth “marathon” of the challenge.

On Thursday, from 11:30- a.m. - 2 p.m., Janzen will be at Tyee Chevrolet for a pizza party in partnership with Papa Murphy’s. They are making pizza on site around noon. She will be ending her 42.2 km at Oyster Bay right in front of the Driftwood restaurant between 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Janzen said her family and friends have been overwhelmingly sup-portive during her train-ing for the event.

“There is a lot more

planning and organizing that had to go into all of this than I had originally anticipated,” she said. “All I’ve had to do is train for the event. My family has been abso-lutely incredible with helping out in every way – from food prep, to media contacts, to everything. My dad built me a shower the other day, so that I can have a shower every day along the way, because we are camping.”

Janzen is hopeful the people of Vancouver Island – and beyond – show their support in the next two weeks by donating to the causes.

“I would love to see $50,000 raised between the two causes,” she said. “On our website we have an option of which cause you want to donate to.

“Neither cause is more dear to my heart than the other. They both mean an awful lot to me.”

To donate to Janzen’s efforts, or to join the team as a runner during the event, visit the web-site at www.embrace-therace2014.com.

Commercial fisher-men and sports anglers are now getting their first crack at what’s hoped to be a record return of Fraser River sockeye salmon.

A 38-hour opening for commercial gillnett-ers took place over the B.C. Day long weekend in Johnstone Strait near Campbell River, likely the first of several open-ings this summer.

Recreational fishing for sockeye in marine areas last Friday and on tidal sections of the lower Fraser Sunday, with non-tidal areas further upstream expected to open the middle of this week.

Department of Fish-eries and Oceans area director Les Jantz said most sockeye stocks appear to be coming in close to or slightly below expectations.

There’s no in-season estimate of the run size

yet, but the mid-range forecast was for 23 mil-lion sockeye, with poten-tial for that to be as low as 7.2 million and as high as 72 million due to an unusual level of uncer-tainty.

Fishery managers are carefully watching to ensure enough sockeye get back upstream to spawn in light of chal-lenging river conditions.

Water levels are 11 per cent below normal, which Jantz said also means the river can heat up fast to dangerously warm temperatures in a bout of hot weather.

The river temperature was 18.4 degrees on July 31 – 0.7 degrees higher than average for this date – and expected to warm to 20.7 degrees in the next few days.

Sustained exposure to water at that tempera-ture can stress migrating sockeye, killing many before they spawn.

DFO will this year let up to 65 per cent of the run be caught or die of

other causes on their migration, an increase from 60 per cent in past years to allow more fish-ing opportunity.

That decision has been criticized by conserva-tion groups that say DFO has authorized overfish-ing that will result in a high bycatch of threat-ened stocks, such as Cultus Lake sockeye and Interior coho, which migrate alongside the more abundant sockeye.

Jantz said DFO is pre-pared to make further adjustments to the fish-ing plan as more run size information comes in to ensure weak stocks aren’t severely damaged by the sockeye fishery.

F i s h i ng by F i r s t Nations for food, social and ceremonial pur-poses has been under-way since late July, with 70,000 sockeye caught as of Aug. 1.

Aboriginal groups will also get to fish com-mercially for sale under “economic opportunity” agreements with DFO.

The high uncertainty over this year’s run is because a huge number of sockeye returned four years ago.

“Some of the levels of spawn we witnessed were considerably larger than anything we had ever witnessed in the past,” he said.

While that creates potential for a mas-sive record run, veteran sockeye watchers know disappointment could be blamed on anything from predators in the open ocean to excessive competition for food among all those juvenile salmon.

The provincial government’s offer to pay families of school-aged children $40 a day if the current contract

impasse with teachers carries into the fall is just another example of the deep-seated enmity between the two sides that stands between a settlement.

On the surface it seems like a good deal; roll the money the government isn’t paying teachers if they’re on strike straight over to parents to ease their

financial burden of making alternate arrangements for minding their kids.

But it’s also another shot across the bow of the teachers, a cynical jab that equates their duties with little more than institutional daycare.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong’s announcement of the program last Thursday was short on details. He said families of the province’s 300,000 children up to age 12 who attend public schools would have to register for the compensation. He didn’t say where those 300,000 children could go if they still can’t attend school come September.

As anyone who has ever tried to find daycare knows, 300,000 spots aren’t going to be created in five weeks.

Nor will $40 go very far to compensate a parent who

has to stay home from work to mind their child. And while de Jong boasted the program would have

no net cost to the government, what about the cost of implementing it?

A bureaucracy created in five weeks to design the registration system, vet applicants and dole out the money won’t come cheaply.

Educating our children is worth more than $40 a day. Those children deserve better than to be treated as

Trench War salvoOur ViewOur View

We say: Children are being use as ammunition in senseless spat

If you bought or built your dream home here in Area D, you have seen your water rates skyrocket in the last two years.

Even though the water rates between Campbell River and Area D were negotiated in April of this year – for the Camp-bell River residential rate ($288) plus 50 per cent – why are some of us paying the residential rate plus upwards of 300 per cent? I personally am paying over $800/year for water, What are you paying? Check your tax notice and don’t for-get to add in the extra $260 yearly water bill.

It seems the director took it upon herself to tie the water rates to the assessed value of your property. This is not been done in any city, municipality or area on Vancouver Island. It is very discriminatory against those property owners whose assessed value is above the average property value of $300,000.

Why should a small percentage of Area D be subsidizing the remaining population of the area? Water rates should be the same for all, regardless of property value.

This is obviously a tax grab and will be remembered come election time.

Even Americans praising Harper’s stanceThere is violent conflict

between Israel and Hamas.Russian President Vladimir

Putin continues to exercise his geopolitical muscle in Ukraine.

Violence has erupted in Libya. The Taliban are regaining strength in Afghanistan. And in Iraq, jihadist fighters continue to cause angst.

Now, more than ever, the world needs its western leaders to stand up for human rights, democracy and decency.

Unfortunately, in the United States, President Barack Obama’s muted response to all these trag-

edies has usurped his country’s role as an international peace-maker.

But in Canada, while we admit-tedly yield little international influence, it’s good to see Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird standing up for Canadian values.

Over the past several weeks, the Conservative govern-ment has been resolute in its unconditional support for Israel.

Minister Baird has put out regu-lar statements chiding the “inter-national terrorist group Hamas”

for its actions. As for Russia, it could be argued

that no other world leader has come close to matching Harper’s verbal lashings of Putin.

Last weekend, Harper took the unusual step of publishing an

op-ed in The Globe and Mail calling Rus-sian separatists — who allegedly shot down

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 — an “extension of the Russian state.”

The Harper government’s prin-cipled positions are even being noticed south of the border.

Popular American conservative radio host Mark Levin recently raved about Harper’s foreign pol-icy on his talk show. My colleague opposite, of course, is ranting about how a Tea party talk show host is praising the Harperites. But, in this case, the praise is jus-tified regardless of the source.

Hamas is recognized as an international terrorist group that has for years, inflicted ter-ror on the people of Israel. And, as explained by Harper, Russia is persisting with “the politics of intimidation and aggression.”

These things need to be said,

action needs to be taken. There’s no benefit to sitting on the fence or sugarcoating the truth.

In the summer of 2011, Harper talked about a new, liberated global vision for Canada, one where we no longer try “to please every dictator with a vote at the United Nations.”

The Harper government has delivered: We now do what is best for Canada, our values and our future. Promise made and, thank goodness, promise kept.

At a fund raising event on Stuart Island this past weekend Pacific West-ern Brewing’s (PWB) Community Founda-tion awarded a salmon enhancement grant of $2,000 to the Campbell River-based Gillard Pass Fisheries Association (GPFA).

Association President Rupert Gale expressed his thanks: “Gillard Pass appreciates the finan-cial commitment from Pacific Western Brew-ing which helps lever-age hundreds of hours of volunteer activities and other support. When others see a company like PWB providing this kind of support they want to be part of it as well.”

The GPFA has been rebuilding the Phillips River Chinook run for more than 30 years. Phil-lips River is at the head of Phillips Arm north of Sonora Island.

Current ly 200,000 juvenile salmon are released into the river annually; 150,000 from Gillard Pass and 50,000 from the Omega Pacific Hatchery, located near Port Alberni.

Gillard Pass volunteers rear ocean type smolts that are fed for three months prior to being released, whereas Omega Pacific raises stream type smolts that are reared for a year before being released. This is a trial; all fish are tagged and have their adipose fins clipped. These proce-dures, combined with an intensive stock assess-

ment program, allow the GPFA to compare ocean survival and returns.

Kazu ko Komatsu , owner of the Prince George-based brewery, says it is this decades-long commitment to the health of wild salmon that PWB is proud to support.

“Hundreds of tireless volunteers are working hard in many BC com-munities to rebuild wild salmon stocks and reha-bilitate their habitat. We are thrilled that volunteer salmon enhancement groups and stream keep-ers have taken advan-tage of the PWB salmon enhancement fund to

support their efforts in communities around BC.” Kazuko says.

PWB – maker of Pacific Pilsner, Cari-boo Genuine draft and other beers – announced the establishment of its salmon enhancement fund in 2013.

To date five grants have been awarded. To apply for support go to PWB’s website home page (www.pwbrewing.com) and follow the prompt.

Sales activity continues to remain strong in the Vancouver Island housing market area, with the Board outperforming its forecasted sales due to a flurry of activity over the summer months.

A total of 456 single-family homes sold on the MLS system in the VIREB coverage area in July 2014. While this figure is slightly lower than the 469 unit sales recorded last month, it represents a six per cent increase over sales activity this time last year. Inventory levels continue to lag behind last year’s figures, dipping approximately two per cent since last July.

VIREB’s active listings for the month of July were down 5.29 per cent over this time last year.

Currently, the sales-to-active listing ratio is sitting around 12 per cent, which puts the Board in the upper boundaries of bal-anced market territory across the Island. VIREB President Blair

Herbert is encouraged by the slow and steady growth on the Island, however he noted that “with the combination of lower inventory levels and rising unit sales, we may start to see a bit of upward pressure on pricing in the latter half of the year.”

In July 2014, the benchmark price for a single-family home in the VIREB coverage area was $319,400 with an MLS HPI index value of 150.1. (This rep-resents a 50.1 per cent increase since January 2005, when the index was 100).

The average price of a single-family home in the VIREB area was $346,207, which is an increase of four per cent over this time last year.

BCREA economist Brendon Ogmundson, reported that things are looking very positive overall on the Canadian and U.S. economic front.

While healthy economic con-ditions are likely contributing to

our stronger market sales activ-ity, he cautioned that, “We may see mortgage rates start to inch up a bit by the end of the year, as a result.”

The numbers The benchmark price for a

single-family home in the Camp-bell River area was $271,400, up 2.04 per cent over this time last year; in the Comox Valley the benchmark price was $329,400, marking an increase of 1.48 per cent over last year; Duncan reports a benchmark price of $280,800, which is exactly the same as it was one year ago; Nanaimo’s benchmark price was $335,200 dipping slightly by 0.93 per cent from last year; Parks-ville/Qualicum has a benchmark price of $356,400, which is rela-tively unchanged from this time last year, dipping 0.21 per cent; and the price for a benchmark home in Port Alberni is listed at $200,800 dropping 1.32 per cent from last year.

The Museum at Campbell River has an intrigu-

ing new exhibit entitled Our Favourites and Unexpected Treasures, on from now until Sept. 14.

Unlike most exhibits, this one does not focus a single topic, but instead provides an opportu-nity for museum staff to bring their favourite things out of storage and put them on display.

Characters like Mr. Tyee, who is rarely seen outside of special events and who lives at the museum, has come out of the storage room as a staff favourite. Other staff favourites are also found throughout the permanent exhibits; indicated by a white star.

The question is often asked: why does a museum collect what it does? It may be sur-prising what ‘things’ are most interesting to a museum. There are several factors to consider when collec-tions staff are making their choices, but often whether or not a piece has monetary value can be the least important factor.

Through this tempo-rary exhibit Museum staff share some of their personal choices in the collection, and give you a glimpse into some of the ‘behind the scenes’ work they do.

The Museum, at 470 Island Highway, is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily until the end of September.

What makes an artifact?

He’s near and dear to many people’s hearts, Mr. Tyee is part of a tem-porary exhibit at the Museum at Campbell River.

The Campebll River Killer Whales (CRKW) sent eight swimmers to Winnipeg last weekend to compete at the Age Group National Cham-pionships, where over 140 teams competed for swimming titles.

They competed against 900 swimmers in a battle for top spots in the coun-try at the fastest and big-gest age group meet of the year.

Flying to Winnipeg for the week was Jenna Beaudin, Melayna Beua-din, Cianna Dunn, Aiden Longcroft-Harris, Mack-enzie Padington, Conner Skuse, Jasmine Skuse and

Jamiliya Wellard. Over the five days of

pool competition, the Killer Whales had 24 swimmers make the finals, win five medals and place 20th overall in team points, which is an impressive result, consid-ering it was a very young team made up of mostly first-time swimmers at the meet.

The bulk of the med-als came from Connor Skuse, who won Gold in the 200 breaststroke, Silver in 400 Individ-ual Medley (IM), and Bronzes in both the 1500 Freestyle and 200 IM. He also broke two

CRKW club records held by Olympian Alec Page, both of which came in the IM disciplines. Pad-dington won the other Bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke, which added to her four other final swims over the week. Jasmine Skuse, Wellard, Melayna Beau-din and Dunn were all at the first nationals and they did great get-ting some best times very important experi-ence for the following seasons. Jasmine made three finals in the 100 and 200 breaststroke and the 1500 Freestyle and Cianna made the 800 Freestyle final.

The last day of compe-tition saw the team head to St. Malo Lake just out-side of Winnipeg for the National Open Water competition where they would compete in 2.5KM and 5.0 KM races. The cool air and water tem-perature created some very tough conditions for the swimmers to race, though the results would suggest otherwise.

Jasmine Skuse swam to a Silver medal in the 12

and under 2.5K, just out touching the 3rd place finisher in a great finish. Padington also won a Sil-ver coming from behind on the last lap to secure 2nd in the 5K.

Dunn and Conner Skuse placed 8th and 4th in the 2.5K and 5K, respectively, both fight-ing hard for their posi-tions and battling the cold elements of the day.

The swim of the morn-ing belonged to Jenna Beaudin, however, as she moved up two spots over the final 1000 meters to put herself into 5th posi-tion, catching up 100 meters over that time.

That final push sent the team into top spot on the team rankings and they came home National Open Water Champions.

It’s very outdated now, but an old English rhyme had it that, at their weddings, brides should wear Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, A Sixpence in your Shoe. The only part of that rhyme that still has resonance for newly married couples today is Blue – as in the post-nuptial state when the newlyweds realize they outrageously overspent for their wedding and now, to coin another phrase, It’s time to pay the piper … and the DJ … and the caterer … and on … and on.Thanks to Statistics

Canada we know that there are over 145,000 weddings in Canada each year* with 48% taking place in the months of June, July and August*. How many of them leave the new couples feeling wedding bill blue we don’t know. But, if you’re heading toward marriage, here are some good tips to

help throw a debt-free wedding.A special wedding

is one you can afford. That gourmet fi ve-course meal for 300 guests sounds great but a wedding is a single day – so look at it in the context of your long-term fi nancial life. Plan a terrifi c wedding but within a reasonable budget.Practice zero-

tolerance for plastic. Don’t use plastic to pay for your wedding. One example: Use your credit card for $25,000 in wedding expenses, at 14% interest and only make the minimum payment each month and you’ll make your fi nal payment on your 100th Anniversary. So put your credit cards away and pay for your wedding with money you’ve saved. Practice prudence. Be

strong and stick to your wedding budget – and use the opportunity to set other fi nancial goals. Here’s a simple budget template to get

you going:How much debt is

each of us bringing to our marriage? $_____How much money

have we saved so far? $_____What is our combined

monthly income (salary and other income)? $_____What are our monthly

costs? $_____How much can we

afford to put into our wedding fund each month? $_____How much can we

afford to save/invest to achieve our other ‘dreams’? $_____For a debt-free

wedding and a successful fi nancial life together – talk to your professional advisor.

Saturday, Aug.t 16 is the date for Campbell River’s first annual music festival – Rockin’ The Island.

With 10 all-Canadian bands and artists per-forming, this year’s talent will deliver an incredible show that all ages will enjoy.

Port McNeill’s own Georgia Murray is one of those talents. Mur-ray, born and raised in Port McNeill, is a singer-songwriter whose 2009 song titled We’ll Never Know was plagiarized by composer Bahnus to create the song Swing for Korean pop star Lee Hyori.

Swing became the number one song in Korea on April 4, 2010. Murray was later com-pensated and given a writing credit from MNet Media the Seoul-based entertainment company.

On Sept. 18, 2011, Murray was named one of the eight final contes-tants vying for $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Canada on Cover Me Canada, CBC Television’s live music competition series.

She was also chosen by the readers of Victoria’s

Monday Magazine as Favourite Hip Hop/R’n’B Artist or Group at the magazine’s annual M

Awards. In June 2011, Murray released a six song EP titled Just a Dream produced and

co-written by her partner DWhiz. In May 2012 Just a Dream was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award in the Urban Recording of the Year category.

In June 2012, Murray was selected as one of the top 20 artists in British Columbia to participate in CKPK-FM’s PEAK Performance Project.

She was recently a featured vocalist in the song Hold It Down by Canadian dubstep artist Datsik from his 2013 LP Let It Burn.

On April 1, Georgia Murray and dj/producer DWhiz launched a new project called LIINKS.

Give Murray a rockin’ welcome on Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Rockin’ The Island. Tickets are on-line at www.tide-marktheatre.com till Aug. 11; then on site at the Music Festival site, 1490 Island Highway North in Campbellton from Aug. 12 - 16. Tick-ets are $70 for Adults, $50 for Students, $40 for children 4 – 11 years and free for 3 and under; Family Passes $199 start-ing July 30.
