THE MUSEUM OF FLIGHT CAMPAIGN NEWSLETTER
SUMMER 2015
9404 East Marginal Way South, Seattle, Washington 98108-4097 • [email protected]
CAMPAIGN GOAL$ 77,000,000
UPCOMING EVENTS
Dear Museum of Flight friends,
I am honored to announce the largest gifts in The Museum of Flight’s history: two outstanding investments from both a company and its legacy family that will shape our institution for years to come. In an unprecedented partnership, The Boeing Company, along with the late Bill Boeing, Jr. and his wife June, have committed $15 million each, for a combined impact of $30 million, launching the Boeing Academy for STEM Learning. For more information about this exciting partnership, please visit museumofflight.org/boeing-academy.
These two investments will strengthen the Museum’s educational programs to ensure our future as a robust learning hub. Investments are already in place to exponentially grow our on-site and outreach programs. The Museum is committed to increasing opportunities for underserved youth, particularly young women and students of color, by connecting them with in-demand STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) career paths and industry mentors. This effort will allow the Museum to more than double our educational capacity, and with the workforce demands of Washington state growing dramatically, these gifts come at an ideal time.
Thanks to Bill and June Boeing, The Boeing Company, and almost 200 other generous donors, the energy and momentum of The Museum of Flight campaign – Inspiration Begins Here! – continue to have a deep and lasting impact. Our loyal and dedicated community has given nearly $60 million to the campaign and contributed more than we ever imagined with its passion,
enthusiasm, and outstanding philanthropy for the institution’s mission and vision. We are taking bold steps forward to preserve our collections and exhibits, enhance our visitor experience and provide a deeper and more lasting educational impact on the community. This is the most ambitious and comprehensive effort the Museum has ever made to ensure our sustainability. We are truly grateful for your dedicated support.
Thank you so much for joining us in our commitment that Inspiration Begins Here!

The Museum of Flight is pleased to announce a $1 million gift from PACCAR Inc to the Inspiration Begins Here! campaign. The gift will rename the Challenger Learning Center in honor of John Fluke, Jr.
Mr. Fluke retired from the PACCAR Board of Directors in April after 30 years, and currently serves on the Museum’s Board of Trustees. Recently renovated with upgraded technology, new seating and a multi-purpose design, the Challenger
Learning Center is part of a worldwide network that serves more than a quarter of a million students and teachers each year. A realistic mission control room and spacecraft empowers grade 5-12 students to think like engineers and scientists, and learn valuable skills like decision making, problem solving and communication. The new John Fluke, Jr. Challenger Learning Center will serve more than 6,500 students, teachers and Museum visitors annually.

The path to become an A330 captain for Delta Air Lines took years of hard work, but it was worth it because it fueled my passion for aviation. Countless young women have the same ambition that I had at their age but don’t have the same resources to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, aviation, art and math (STEA²M).
Since becoming involved with The Museum of Flight more than 11 years ago, I’ve made it my mission to provide as many STEA²M opportunities as possible for young women to succeed in careers traditionally occupied by men. Project Amelia was special for me because I was a part of bringing to the Museum the iconic Lockheed

Aviation Pavilion Takes Shape
Soaring into STEM with ACE Camp This summer, The Museum of Flight’s Aerospace Camp Experience (ACE), the award-winning day camp for students ages 4-13, is offering new classes in more locations. For the first time in 5 years, 5-7th graders can attend camp at our Restoration Center and Reserve Collection at Paine Field to explore aeronautics in the Puget Sound region. In addition, camp curriculum at the Museum’s campus has expanded to include electrical engineering, computer programming, nanotechnology and the relationship between aviation and natural science. Impactful new programs like Mosquito Gliders, Dash and Dot Robots and Paper Circuits enable students to explore more opportunities in the astonishing world of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). With knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff – 80% of whom are returning from last summer – it’s not surprising that 2015 ACE attendance has reached a record-breaking 1,830 campers!
I support the campaign because I want to give the next generation of women the tools to pursue their dreams.
Model 10-E Electra that had been restored to the exact specifications as Amelia Earhart’s – something that will inspire Museum visitors to dream of doing something that has never been done before.
The Museum of Flight already does a fantastic job of exposing students to aerospace pioneers like Amelia Earhart and Sally Ride. The Inspiration Begins Here! campaign will go above and beyond expanding learning opportunities for students of all ages. In addition to increasing attendance and scope for educational programs like Amelia’s Aero Club, the Museum will partner with Raisbeck Aviation High School to offer college credits in STEA²M fields to propel young women into careers at aerospace companies as well as businesses in many other sectors that will benefit from their skills.
Inspiration Begins Here! will do amazing things at The Museum of Flight. I support the campaign because I want to give the next generation of women the tools to pursue their dreams.
By the dawn’s early light, the Aviation Pavilion’s mega-truss—a massive steel support— was added to the building on July 24. Spanning east and west about 220 ft., this new addition is truly colossal and weighs as much as a fully-loaded Boeing 757-200. Construction for the Aviation Pavilion is running ahead of schedule, and, if progress continues at this pace, the Museum will begin moving aircraft into the new site by early Spring 2016.
Once completed, The Museum of Flight’s Aviation Pavilion will cover more than 20 commercial and military airplanes. Aircraft that will be moved to the Aviation Pavilion upon its completion include the Museum’s recently restored Boeing 747, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the first jet Air Force One, the Concorde airliner and the B-17, B-29 and B-47 bombers.
“Building a permanent cover will help us protect these treasures of aviation history for generations to come,” said Doug King, president and CEO of The Museum of Flight. “The pavilion will give Museum members and visitors rain-or-shine, four-season access to these amazing airplanes.”
