Trichy, A very beautiful city of Tamilnadu , is an important educational and institutional centre in Tamilnadu. Trichy sits at the confluence of two major highways NH45 and NH67.  NH-67, the national Highway joining kattur and palpannai junction in Trichy corporation is full of black spots, previous accident datas are horrible. Team of 5 students from NIT Trichy studied the facts ,status and problems faced by stakeholders in this region deeply under our Internship . They identified and listed the common problems faced by stakeholders and proposed a solution to tackle them and presented it to authority.

A solution was proposed to make a fly over at oil mill junction as number of vehicles using approach road is very high, also pedestrian passing through intersection was very large approx  15 pedestrians in 2 minutes. This makes it difficult for vehicles to use as a service lane. A flyover will allow right turning vehicles to pass through underpass. U turn will also be accommodated by it. They also proposed a bill for SIT Junction. It was proposed to provide service lanes for the approach road on either side also median should be joined in intersection thereby prohibiting U and right turning vehicles. Now as medians have been joined so there pedestrians will be prohibited so in plan they also said to construct a foot over bridge for the convenience of pedestrians. While in SIT junction, a service lane, joining the existing median  and installation of foot-over-bridge would suffice. This will lead to two-fold benefit for the users and for the enforcement team. For implementation of these solutions a meeting with a construction consultant Madhucon Pvt. Ltd proved it to be feasible and a copy of it is sent to National Highways Authority of India. The work is now under construction and soon it will be implemented.

Sri Aurobindo Marg (near AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital) and the AIIMS Flyover, New Delhi : The traffic from south extension and Aurobindo Marg and their convergence near the AIIMS hospital entrance gate creates too much problem. Because of the illegal auto stands, the high speed traffic is brought to a sudden standstill causing traffic congestions and sometimes accidents (mainly at night).

For the foot-over-bridge: Since the foot-over-bridge would be catering to mostly patients visiting the corresponding hospitals, it should have ramps and elevators for the disabled. The foot-over-bridge should connect both the hospitals, and there should be a separate exit for those opting not to enter the hospital premises. The foot-over-bridge would ensure a smooth flow of traffic, and thus the traffic lights near AIIMS Gate Number 1 can be removed. For the grills on the dividers: Once the foot-over-bridge is operational, grills can be constructed on the dividers so that stray pedestrians do not cross the road without having to use the foot-over-bridge. For the auto-stands: Since there already exists an auto stands, but the drivers, not abiding by the rules, just to ferry more customers, there should be stricter management of all the autos, so that there are no strays crowding the main road. For the water clogging problem : Round the year maintenance of storm water drainage system is required.Regular cleaning of drains and most importantly keeping the ambuience clean should be the top priority. Littering waste should be prevented and fines should be imposed on the offenders. The team also presented the solution with amount estimated for solving each of the problem in that area and got the approval of the concerned authority with the construction beginning as per the report submitted.

Policy Internships are aimed at changing the ground level scenario of road safety in India and this year we were able to move a bit closer to our mission. The internships are done in groups of 4-5 and are 4 month long internships where the students are asked to work in 4 phases  Analyze the problem -> Find the relevant statistics to support the statement  ->  Work out with local government officials and support with case study ->  Implement the solution with help of the authority

A total of 250+ interns went out to 72 locations across India, identified a road safety problem, interacted with the stakeholders, worked with experts to devise solutions and presented the work to the local authorities. Out of the 72 locations, at 20 places the solutions were accepted by the authorities and 10 interns even got the solution implemented.

We would like to give you overview of the 2 best internships for this year

Our aim of making indian roads safer

can only be achieved when youth start

working towards it, by this competition

we are trying to promote youth to

realize their responsibility towards the

society.  Under this all the college

chapters are required to showcase up

their work that they have done in a

year to make the Indian Roads safer.

Whole championship is divided into 60

activities which would be focusing on

these dimensions-

1. Spreading awareness about road

safety among people.

2. Solving infrastructural problems.

3. Enhancing technological

advancement in vehicles.

This championship focuses on tackling

all the dimensions together to make

Indian roads safer. These are very

broad  dimensions there are further

divisions on each and every category

within these dimensions such as public,

schools, traffic police, ministry,

technical innovations, professors,

youths and everyone whom we can

involve to achieve our target of

reducing the road safety accidents by

half by 2020.

This championship will motivate college

teams to work enthusiastically for this

noble cause. The teams would work

enthusiastically under the guidance of

experts and the best teams would be

awarded cash prizes and range of other

incentives.

Under this, each college team would be

working not only on the technological

changes but also a 1km long stretch

near the college would be assigned to

them in which they would be expected

to bring vast improvement in the traffic

scenario.

College Championship-2017-18

Technical Internship & Product Development

"College championship is the all year round competition that is being conducted for allcolleges that are being associated with Indian Road Safety Campaign"

"Technology can be used to enhance the pace at which we carry forward our efforts towards a safer road network in our country."

We being the students from one of the best

technical institute of India have always

envisioned to use technology to ace any

problem in the smallest time. As such, we

have decided to float technical internships,

for the students of premier technical

institutions and make the interested

candidates work in some actual technical

project related to road safety .

This shall give them an opportunity to work

under some prestigious colleges such as BITS

Pilani, IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi or Multinational

companies like Efkon India Pvt Ltd gain

invaluable hands-on experience as to how to

solve road safety problems using

technologies.

In the last 2 months, the following work hs

also been done : A proposals on topics related

to road safety were made for the MIT-IIT Tech

top that the MIT students would work on

during there stay at IIT Delhi. Simultaneously,

we also plan to make use of the knowledge

and creativity of thesecandidates to initiate

new implementable and feasible products.

Work on building seat belt detection device

and improved accessibility for visually

impaired on buses has already been

started.

While work on safe-kart ( flipkart for safety

device) is in progress to help aware people

about the various features of safety devices

and making it available for them at low

cost.

We are also digitization work of the road

accidents data recording in collaboration

with the ministry.

This will help in better data analysis and

quick compilation of the data so that

appropriate directed actions be taken to

mitigate the cause. We are also developing a

India map that shows the road safety

fatality data state-wise to spread awareness

about states that have the max rate.

The team is open to new ideas and

collecting topics from all over the places it

can gather to make people work in

increasing road safety technically.
