  • for kids with cancer and their familiesCamp Rap-A-Hope is providing year-round support and programs

across coastal communities in AL, FL, LA, and MS. Our programs help to build confidence, courage, love, faith and most of all hope in the hearts of our campers and families.

This is the spirit of Camp Rap-A-Hope.

  • Dear Friends and Supporters,

Camp Rap-A-Hope enjoyed a fun-filled and exciting 2013. Our week-long summer camp continues to be the highlight of our year as we welcome new families, volunteers and supporters into our Camp Rap-A-Hope family. Our many other annual events continue to grow too as we add additional programs to serve the needs of our growing community. All of our programs and special events, fundraisers, family days, trips, and even our Board of Directors meetings are held with the purpose of providing Fun For Kids With Cancer and to support our children and families through their journey with childhood cancer.

Our programs are made possible because of the generous support of our community. Your donations, volunteerism, and help in raising awareness has allowed us the awesome privilege of making a difference in the lives of our special campers and their families. Your support doesnt stop there. You serve as encouragement for the Camp Rap-A-Hope family when we experience a loss. We lost two in 2013, camper Roy Williams and Ruth Ball, a dedicated volunteer and an outspoken supporter for more than 20 years. Both battled cancer with such courage and grace and they will be greatly missed.

The Medical Society of Mobile County and the Alliance to the Medical Society of Mobile County founded Camp Rap-A-Hope 28 years ago and we continue to be blessed by their gracious and immeasurable support. Community support continues to grow also and is critical to our continued success. We appreciate your help in 2013 and we ask that you continue to join the fun by supporting Camp Rap-A-Hope through volunteerism, financial support, and in helping to raise awareness. We encourage you to be a part of our journey as we continue to serve our many special families. Lastly, but certainly not least, please be sure that any child battling cancer, or that has ever battled cancer, knows about Camp Rap-A-Hope we dont want them to miss the fun.

    With Sincere Thanks,

    Melissa McNicholExecutive Director

    Laura GibsonPresident, Board of Directors

  • Camp Rap-A-Hopes many volunteers work year-round to provide the many services and programs offered; including, an exceptional, normal camping experience for children and youth who have been diagnosed with cancer at any point throughout their lifetime. Camp Rap-A-Hopes design allows these children to learn how to overcome challenges, both individually and as a team, form new friendships while strengthening their bond with old friends, experience acceptance, test their endurance, and above all experience love, faith, courage, and hope.

The Medical Society of Mobile County and the Alliance to the Medical Society of Mobile County established Camp Rap-A-Hope in 1985. The founders envisioned an organization that would provide opportunities for these children to experience the joys of normal childhood while enduring the physical and emotional trials associated with cancer. A year later, twelve children from the Mobile area enjoyed the very first Camp Rap-A-Hope summer camp. Since 1986, Camp Rap-A-Hope has welcomed hundreds of children 100% free of charge, as cancer has been costly enough.

    ABOUT US

All Camp activities are 100% free of charge. Cancer has been costly enough.

  • Throughout the years, Camp Rap-A-Hope has grown significantly! As the only summer camp for children with cancer along the central Gulf Coast, Camp Rap-A-Hope works closely with healthcare providers along more than 300 miles of the Gulf Coast to bring fun to these amazing children.

Each year Camp Rap-A-Hope welcomes more than 150 Camp volunteers, who fully staff every aspect of Camp. Who are these wonderful people and where do we find them? We begin a serious search for volunteers each winter. Our volunteers are doctors, nurses, other medical specialists, college students, business men and women all from a variety of backgrounds. Their experiences at Camp are often as life-changing for them as for our campers.

To volunteer as a Camp Rap-A-Hope counselor, you must be 19 years old or have completed one year of college. Counselors must spend the entire week at Camp, including pre-camp training. Most importantly, they must love kids and be able to put their own needs aside for this week and focus solely on the campers. In addition, volunteer physicians fully staff Camp Rap-A-Hopes Med Shed 24 hours a day, come rain or shine or heat or mosquito bites!

The Camp Rap-A-Hope spirit is infectious and keeps many of our volunteers returning year after year!

  • HOW WE ARE GOVERNED

Camp Rap-A-Hope is governed by a Board of Directors, comprised entirely of volunteers from the medical and lay communities. These Directors not only serve as an advisory council to the Camp Rap-A-Hope Foundation but also as volunteers throughout the year and a critical link to our community. The Board of Directors are charged with ensuring the fiduciary responsibility and success and long-term strategic plan of the organization.

  • For the last four years I have had the privilege of serving on the Board of Directors for Camp Rap-A-Hope in the capacity of Treasurer. As an accountant by profession, I approached this from a purely business standpoint. However, as I became more acquainted with this organization my perspective changed from one of pure business to one of pure joy at being able to serve such a worthy and outstanding organization.

What is Camp Rap-A-Hope to me? It is children having the time of their lives while exhibiting strength and courage despite facing more in their short lives than most people can imagine. It is volunteers who never lose their excitement at being able to give these children a week filled with fun they will never forget. It is staff members who love what they do and love the children and families they serve every day of the year.

Without question, becoming a part of the Camp Rap-A-Hope family has been one of the best things I have ever done. I have received much more than I have given. And it can be the same for you, just give it a try!

Sandy Blount President Elect, Board of Directors

  • I have been going to Camp for 6 years, it is so much fun. We meet so many friends at Camp and get to learn and do new stuff that we wouldnt have done if it were not for Camp Rap-A-Hope. I have made a lot of friends over the years. Albert was the first person to talk to me and was my first friend from Camp. When we are together we are not worried about any looking or talking about our scars from cancer. The counselors make it a comforting and fun place to be.

We do a lot of really cool activities like swimming in the lake, jumping off of the wibit, horseback riding, ropes course, and arts and crafts. We have a different theme every year. We did a circus theme my first year at Camp and again last year. We actually got to do different circus tricks like Chinese yo-yos, plate spinning, clown acts, and my all-time favorite- the stilts.

I will miss not going back since I graduated out this year, this has been a big part of my life over the years. The staff is one of the best parts of Camp. They are always making sure we are having fun. I had Stage IV Burkitts Lymphoma when I was 5, so it is nice to let new campers see that life goes on. We have campers that are just starting treatments, just finishing treatments, or are off like me and some of my friends are. I am a senior in high school and will graduate and start college in the fall. Camp Rap-A-Hope will always hold a special place in my heart and has helped make me the person I am today.

    Jessica Bailey

Hello. I am Cindy, Jessicas mom. We have been blessed to have Camp Rap-A-Hope in our lives. Jessica has been to other cancer camps, but this is the one she loves. She stays in contact with the other campers she has met over the years. She doesnt let anything get in the way of Camp, not even her sisters high school graduation. Jessica said Camp was more important and they were at the same time. As a parent it makes you feel good to know after all the pain and emotional rollercoaster they have been through they can go somewhere and have a BLAST and be loved and spoiled. I do not think Camp Rap-A-Hope says the word No to anything these children want to do. Thank you for helping support Camp Rap-A-Hope.

    Summer Camp

Each summer Camp Rap-A-Hope opens its doors to provide a week of fun, exciting, and unforgettable experiences to all of our campers. We make sure that each camper gets the opportunity to develop new skills and self-confidence through activities like horseback riding, swimming, arts & crafts, fishing, music, canoeing, and so many more. Campers are housed in rustic cabins that are nestled in under tall trees and overlook a sparkling lake.

Each year has its own theme and 2013s theme was titled Cirque du Hope: The Greatest Camp on Earth and featured real circus performers who worked with each camper to teach some truly amazing tricks.

In 2013, our summer camp program provided 87 campers a week of smiles, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime. These 87 campers also represent the same number of families that were given the opportunity to focus on the needs of other siblings and/or family members.

    Teen Weekend

In 2013 Camp Rap-A-Hope began a new program that provides an overnight retreat specifically designed for our oldest campers. Current year and upcoming year graduates are invited. This weekend includes all of our normal Camp activities, group games, and coincides with our annual Deep Sea Fishing Trip.

Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, our sister camp in Vermont, sends campers to Mobile, AL to join the fun!

    Fall Family Fun Day

Each fall we welcome the Camp Rap-A-Hope family for a fun-filled day of canoeing, arts & crafts, fishing, and more. This day is designed to give the whole family a chance to see some of what their camper experiences while at Summer Camp. The entire families of our campers, both young and old, are invited to join in on the fun. In 2013 more than 350 people attended this fun filled family day, making it our largest one-day program.

  • Deep Sea Fishing

Campers 9 years old and up are invited to attend this annual Fishing Trip courtesy of our friends at Zekes Landing in Orange Beach, AL. A great day of fishing fun and adventure awaits those brave enough to charter the seas!

    Hospital Camp

Camp Rap-A-Hope is active even away from the campground. We offer year-round activities for children with cancer in the hospital setting. Volunteers work inside the hospital to help bring a little bit of the camp fun indoors with coloring books, board games, jewelry making and many other activities. Our hospital camp is an important way that we share information on programs and services offered through Camp Rap-A-Hope. Additionally, our hospital camp program helps us build relationships with our campers and their families and allows us to begin meeting the needs of campers and their families long before they ever attend camp. In addition to our hospital camp volunteers, the Camp Rap-A-Hope staff provides ongoing support to our campers in the hospital setting by visiting the many facilities where our campers are treated. From Louisiana to Florida and all along the Gulf Coast, our staff works closely with hospital staff to plan visits that bring the Camp Rap-A-Hope spirit to our existing campers. This program allows doctors and nurses to introduce Camp Rap-A-Hope to potential new campers and their families.

Over the past eight years The Mobile County Sheriffs Office has been honored to participate with Camp Rap-A-Hope. We have volunteered by transporting kids to and from Camp, participating in activities the week of Camp and collecting items needed for Camp programs.

We will continue our commitment to Camp Rap-A-Hope because we believe it changes the lives of the campers who attend. We also believe it changes our lives as volunteers.

Children fighting cancer are struggling everyday to enjoy life. If we can be a part of helping a child experience Camp Rap-A-Hope, then you can count on us every year.

    Sheriff Sam Cochran
