Fun Facts• All OSU students, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear orange on Fridays to celebrate OSU and all of its achievements.

• When doing the “S” in OSU, the left arm is raised and the right arm is down.

• PMS 166 is OSU’s orange. That’s right, our orange is official. It’s PMS 166, an official color in the Pantone Matching System, the worldwide color standard.

• The OSU campus buildings are built in a modified Georgian style with red brick and white trim.

• So why are the sidewalks in front of Old Central crooked? President Bennett waited until the students had worn paths in the grass and then had Physical Plant put in the concrete sidewalks.

PISTOL PETE• Until 1923, OSU’s mascot was a tiger similar to Princeton University’s. It was during the search for a new mascot that a group of students saw Frank “Pistol Pete” Eaton riding in an Armistice Day Parade.

• Eaton served the university for 35 years, appearing at athletic events, building dedications and other university events.

• Eaton was born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1860 and soon moved to Kansas following the end of the Civil War.

• Six outlaws killed young Frank Eaton’s father. To avenge his father’s death he later found and killed all but one of the outlaws.

• He did attend that man’s funeral after the man was shot for cheating at cards. Eaton became widely known as a symbol of the Old West. He was eventually inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1997.

• Each year two students serve as Pistol Pete. They appear at more than 1,000 events including athletic events, pep rallies, birthday parties and public school events, dedications and university events. They also travel the state representing Oklahoma State University.

• Since 1958, OSU students have portrayed the animated gunslinger “Pistol Pete.”

ST!PS FROM THE EXPERTS

• Introduce yourself to the professors, no matter how silly you feel.

• Take advantage of the Math and Learning Resource Center (MLRC).

• Sit in the front, unless you plan on being tardy often.

• To drop a class, you must go to the Registrar’s office located in the Student Union.

• Buy a Mortar Board – it will help you keep track of your life. Mortar Boards are sold in the University Store (on the first floor of the Student Union).

• The Student Union has free pancakes during Finals Week!

• You must have your adviser’s approval and your bursar bill must be paid before you can enroll.

• Learn to use SIS (Student Information System).

• Beware of bikes on campus.

• There are air pumps at the Student Union and Engineering North to air up your bike tires.

• Cars always have to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. You can get pulled over and ticketed if you don’t yield to pedestrians.

• Obey traffic signs at stoplights. You can get fined for jaywalking.

• Those aren’t birds at stoplights – they chirp for visually-impaired people.

• The ducks and geese at Theta Pond can be somewhat aggressive and may chase you.

• If you are in a car you MUST yield to campus wildlife (ducks and geese).
