    Recovery and future excitement

Its been seven months since thenal retreat at North East Camp2012. The tents are all gone andthe kit is all away. Its only ninemonths until the next one andwe have already started to gearup. Wouldnt you like to knowwhats going on now? Whatscoming next...

Lets start withmemories. Tiredseems to be thebest way todescribe theaftermath. Themini buses leavecamp and thecombinednetworks of O2,Vodaphone andT-mobile getoverwhelmed withtexts from buses a mere 20 miles

apart. As they get further apartthe heads start to nod... and thensleep.

Post Camp Blues. ThePCBs, a widely acceptedsymptom of having left camp. How many times did you look around the street of Beverly,

Brightlingsea andDurham and seepeople thatshouldn't be there.Danny Martin onNewton Hall inDurham, Sue Tealon the bus anywherebut Beverly. Thenthere seems to be anunusually highnumber of minibuses on theroad.

I trust that we all know whatthis feels like... so you will behappy to read that the CampBoard is already looking to next

year to make North East Camp2013 one to remember.

There will be many moretails of triumph, many moresongs that remind you of campand many more moments thatmake you think. why am Idoing this, only to nd yourself doing it again the next year. What will you nd yourself doing?

Some might suggest that the most importantthing that I do as camp chaplain is judge thetidy tent competition!

The daily inspection of tents takes place after morning worship whilst members and officersare enjoying breakfast; however I begin mydeliberations on that days marks as soon asthe bugle sounds. The exact scoring systemfor the tidy tent competition is a closelyguarded trade secret, passed down fromchaplain to chaplain. Yet despite somecreative attempts from members (and tentsupervisors!)to extractinformationfrom me thisremains so.However, Iwill give afew tips for how to getgood marks. The threemost important things I look for reflect the reason why we have thetidy tent competition in the first

place. First of all: teamwork.Working together as a team first

thing in the morning to get our tentready teaches us a lot about working witheach other and sharing tasks andresponsibilities. Second is practicality, for example: is the tent safe and secure? If itrains how easy will it be to stop the kit

getting wet? Finally there is style: such thingsas how well kit is set out, and I particularlyenjoy anything a bit different or original. Thishelps us to think creatively.

In the two years that I have been campchaplain I must say how impressedIve been with the standard of the tidytents. Last years competition was avery close call with only a few pointsseparating all the tents. I hope that thegood work and enthusiasm for the

    competition continuesfor many years.

few tips for how to get good marks
