Dear Parents/ Carers It’s a strange morning here at Greenside: sunshine and showers already and we are working without our glorious students on our second CPD day. We had a very successful day yesterday with reflections on our year and the start of so much exciting planning that will be ready for September – we are looking forward to a productive day and then the final 3 and a half weeks of the year. 2. Sports Day

Mr. Yeats reports: “The Greenside Games was another great success this year with records being smashed left, right and center. The students showed their sporting prowess at the Linford Christie Stadium as they ran, jumped and threw their way to sporting glory! As always, the students' excellent sporting attitudes shone through with everyone cheering on their classmates to go fast-higher-stronger in true Olympic fashion. 3. School Sleep Out: Special News Oh what fun we had and some students even got some sleep! Please see the Special News section from Ms. Tossell for a report on the incredible kindness of our Greenside students. 4. STAR Day Stories Y2 - Fabulous Factories! Y2 put on their design boots again this week, and became fantasy world factory engineers and designers for Willy Wonka’s new factory! Students first built ‘word factories’ together by being assigned a specific Wonka room or character that they were to describe in detail, and these rooms were cut and pasted together to ‘build’ a factory. This was a wonderful team-writing project that resulted in some delightful descriptive work. Then, on Tuesday Y2 were given a design brief for building a factory out of 3D shapes (the recyclable materials kind!) that included shapes, materials and tools they could use and a sizing restriction. From there on in it was time to design, collaborate and create! Check out these fantastic results! Y5 Design Day Mr. Groves tells us: “Last Friday, students from Y5 donned their safety goggles, picked up their saws and readied their hammers to help construct the new front entrance to a school. Students were put to the test to measure, mark, cut, assemble, refine and finish their work in order to make a trellis each. They will soon be added to the new structure and eventually become the home some beautiful climbing plants. Well done to all Y5 students for their excellent handyman (and women) skills”.

5. Hospital Heroes On Wednesday, four special Greenside students were recognized for their amazing fundraising efforts earlier this month. Ella and Louis Caffrey and their friends Sofia and Hugo Engelke along with their families walked for over 10 kilometres and raised over £1,800 for the Brompton Charity. They will donate the money to the Paediatric High Dependency Unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital. This unit provides specialist care for babies and children who need extra intervention or monitoring. Florrie Abella, a Nurse who works at the hospital came to Greenside to thank the students for their incredible work and effort in helping others. They were each presented with a framed certificate that recognizes their ‘compassion, care and courage in helping others’. We are so proud of them all! 6. Donation Day Ms. Tossell and Documentary Crew 2 want to say a big THANK YOU to all of our Greenside students and families who donated items last Wednesday for their Donation Day to help create care packages for the homeless in London. We were absolutely amazed with how many items we collected…boxes and boxes and boxes! Documentary Crew 2 had a great session counting everything up and seeing how many packages we’ll be able to make before the end of term, and we’re so excited to say that it will be around 100! What an amazing achievement. Thanks, Greensiders!

7. Specialisms in the Summer! A very proud Ms. Buchanan reports: “Last week we started our new photography specialism with amazing results! We first looked at some famous photographers like Man Ray, Martin Parr and Annie Leibowitz, and found that they all had a unique style and colour palette to their work. We then looked at twin brother photographers Yais and Yafiq Yusman and their architectural photos. They use lots of different angles and compositions to show the geometry in everyday buildings and we were so taken by them that we decided to take our own around the school, inspired by their compositions. We used our ipads and edited them with an app and the results are amazing! They were so good that we decided to have a competition using Instagram. We uploaded the pictures, and will continue to do so each week. You can vote for your favourite picture by liking them on our page and the student with the most likes at the end of the specialism wins a prize! You can follow us and like our pictures on Instagram at @the_photography_kids” Here’s a taster: 8. Eco/Food Team Farm Trip: On Tuesday the members of our Eco/Food team headed out to Crockford Bridge Farm in Surrey. As part of our work with the Whole Foods Schools To Market project, we have been commissioned to make chutney to sell at the Fulham Whole Foods store in July. So we went to pick the fruit and vegetables to make our chutney. The team have decided to make ‘Blasting-Beet’ Chutney so we needed lots of fabulous beetroot. We also got some rhubarb and could not resist the juicy strawberries.

Page 4: Camera Sound Greenside Film Factory · 5/17/2015  · Newsletter from the Issue: 17 Date: Friday 24th June 2016 Breaking Boundaries Greenside Film Factory Camera Sound Camera SoundLights

The next day the team worked hard chopping, grating and stirring to turn the produce into our chutney and get it bottled up ready to sell. We also made some delicious jam – watch out for it appearing with our homemade vanilla ice cream next week! Well done to all the team for the hard work.

9. Queen’s Birthday Lunch: Ms. Webber, our Royal reporter explains: “On Thursday 9th June, Greenside celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday with an English themed lunch. The lunchroom was decorated with flags and bunting made by the Food Crew whilst we enjoyed a traditional spread of sausage, beans and chips. To follow this we had homemade scones served with whipped cream and strawberries. Happy Birthday your majesty!”

10. Food Experience September 2016 Dear Parents/ Carers – I am re-printing the statement below just to ensure everyone has seen this information as it is a change of lunch arrangements for some students in September. A very big thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our survey regarding the next stage of our Food Experience. There was overwhelming support for what we are doing and so in light of that, we have decided from September 2016 to make school lunch compulsory for all new joiners to Greenside and for all students in Nursery, Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3. If your daughter/ son is in one of these year groups and you feel there is a reason that she/ he is unable to eat Greenside lunches please contact me a.s.a.p. and as far as possible before the end of term so that we can meet to discuss possible options. We will honour the decision made by families for students who in September will be in Y4, Y5 and Y6 to have packed lunch, should they choose, for the rest of their time at Greenside. We have worked really hard to improve the quality of the food our students get and we are very confident that the food they receive here at Greenside is exemplary and offers excellent value for money. We would love to invite you to join us for lunch one day before the end of term to share this with you. Details of our parent/ carer lunch day will be released soon and we do hope lots of you will be able to join us to see for yourself how fabulous our food really is”. 11. A Message for Ms. Switzman It would be lovely to see as many parents/ carers and ex-Greenside students who have been taught by Ms. Switzman during our special ‘Tea & Cakes’ on Wednesday 13th July. Anna and the PSA Team have kindly agreed that we can create a ‘farewell and thank you’ occasion in honour of Lynne that afternoon so please put that date in your diary! I would also like to invite you to send a message for a memory book we are compiling for Lynne. Attached is a ‘star’ shape – please feel free to type a message and e-mail back, print and write a message and pop it in to the Office or even collect a star from the office and write a message when you are in Greenside over the next couple of weeks. If you have daughters/ sons who have been taught by Lynne over the years it would be fab if they too could share a memory/ message or just a good luck wish – thank you for your help. 12. Documentary Viewing at Greenside Our Greenside Documentaries are getting more interesting as I write – politics, reading, food and homelessness represent some very sophisticated concepts for our students. We are planning a family viewing of the Documentaries during the afternoon of Monday 18th July starting at 1.45pm. If you were able to come along and watch with us we’d love to see you there and tickets will be issued closer to the date. If you are unable to come along we will make the Documentaries available through You-Tube or our

The workshop will begin at 10.30am and will be a chance for families to enjoy a shared film making experience with Ms. Tossell. This will end at 12.00pm ready for the shared Food Experience opportunity with Ms. Webber! We also invite you in to share our Food Experience and have lunch with us on Tuesday 5th July. If you would like to join your daughter/ son at lunchtime, please book in with the office. Lunch time for KS1/EYFS students is 12.00noon and 12.30pm for our KS2 students. On the eve of Friday 17th June, over 80 little Greensiders trooped back to school with their pyjamas on and a pillow and

blanket tucked under their arms. They were there to support Documentary Crew 2 with their campaign against homeless-

ness in London, and what a night of awareness it became!

With guest speakers to highlight some of the current statistics about those living in London without a home, our students

quickly understood the importance of their action: they were there to make a difference! Feeling inspired, they then en-

joyed an evening with friends, knowing that all of their ticket money (close to £1000 in total!) would be donated to the

Acton Homeless Concern and Brixton Soup Kitchen by the end of the term.

Documentary Crew 2 would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support on the night. We had over 80 students

join us for dinner, games and a film, and around 65 who stayed overnight. Very impressive,

Green- side!
