    Demo Setup Instructions

    Demo Setup

There’s no special setup required for Mold and EMX demo. All the demo data were set to MM unit. You may need to change the unit to meet yourown requirements

However, you may need to change the working directory in the middle of the demo.

For Part, change the working di rectory to /part folder

For Mold Design, change the working directory to /mold folder

And EMX folder contains a complete backup data of the entire demo.

    Config.win and Config.pro

Can be found in the loadpoint of EMX 5.0 under the text directory.

Use these for the demo by placing them in your startup directory.

    Demo Tips & Tricks

    Pro/ENGINEER Tips & Tricks

You are welcome to customize you own mapkey or icon to further beautify the demo.

This was tested using Wildfire 3.0 M030 and EMX5.0 M030.

    Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Camera Part Introduction

    1. Demo Introduction

Change working directory to and open demo.prt

Hello and welcome to my Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Mold and EMX demonstration. We’regoing to cover lots of new functionality that are included in the Tool Design Option and ExpertMold Base Extension…

    2. Camera modelintroduction

Spin around the model andshow the complex surfaces ofthe model / internal ribs

This is the model data I had received from my customer (throw in some names such asSONY etc). As you can see, this camera model contains of high degree of complex surfacesand also internal ribs at the other side of the model….

    3. Cross Section

    View Manager / Xsec

I can easily create 3D cross section in Pro/ENGINEER model and check if the model hasinconsistent thickness, undercut etc, besides, I can integrate this cross section information to

    my part drawing….

    4. Draft Check

     Analysis / Geometry / Draft

Before I start my mold design, I would like to analyze this camera model if it is fully drafted. This is very important information for a mold maker because draft angle will determine thesuccess of mold design. As you may see, this camera part is fully drafted which means I cango on for my mold design right away….

    Mold Design – Splitting

    5. Mold Design

Close the Camera part Window/File / New / Manufacturing / MoldCavity / ‘mold_demo’ or anyname(Make sure units are mm)

Let me close this camera model window and start my mold design right away. I need tocreate a new manufacturing file call ‘mold_design’……

    6.  Assemble Reference part

    Select / and selectdemo.prt

Let me bring in the camera model into my mold design environment…

< talk about the new mold design icon…>

    7. Merge the Referencemodel

    Same Model and press OK

Now, Pro/ENGINEER creates a reference model automatically Or I can create my molddesign with the original model…

With merging to the same reference model, we are adding all the mold features such asShrinkage factor etc to the original model…

    8. Coordinate System forRef Model

    Ref.Model Origin and Orient

/ Select ‘MAIN’ coordinate system< separate window > at the refpart /

Pro/ENGINEER selected a default coordinate system at the ref model, however I would liketo select the other coordinate system at the ref model so that it assembles the way I want itto be.

    9. Layout Preview

    Preview

As you can see, the ref model has been assembled into my mold design environment andthis is how a single ref model is being assembled using a Coordinate System.

    10. Rectangular Preview

    Select Rectangular option and

    Preview

Now I would like to design my mold with multiple cavities. Selecting Rectangular optionallows me to visualize how my mold will look with 4 cavities….

    11. Rectangular Preview

    Change the increment value

You can change the distance between these cavities. By changing the value at theincrement option to 120 and 150, you can see the models move according to the valueinstantly. You can also change the orientation of these cavities by selecting the X-symmetricoption or preview changes using a Y-symmetric option etc…

As for demo purposes, I would like to work on single cavity for my mold design.

    12. Shrinkage Value

    / Select MAIN / UncheckIsotropic / enter 0.005 for X / Y

    / Z axis /

As you know, all the plastic molds must be included with Shrinkage values, this is how weadd a shrinkage value to my ref part….The scaling option is the best option for me, to add shrinkage value to this mold, I need toselect a coordinate system as a base of the shrinkage value. 0.005 will be the Shrinkagefactor for this mold…..

Now, 0.005 has been added to all the dimensions into this model…

    13. Workpiece

    / SelectMOLD_DEF_CSYS  / Enter 30for Uniform Offsets / OK

Creating a Work insert is really easy for Pro/ENGINEER, as you can see, Pro/ENGINEERdetects the actual size of my ref part and creates a work insert that envelopes the ref model.

However you may change the work insert size as you like. For this mold design, I’d like toadd bigger value to the work insert uniformly around the reference part…Uniform Offsets have not worked i n M030!

Now a work insert has been added to my mold design….

    14. View Manager

    View Manager/Style/New/ accept‘style0001’ as new name/ Edit /Redefine / Show / WireFrame /

Pick the WorkPiece / / Close

    .

In order to make my job easier, I would like to add new view type to my mold design….

Now the Workpiece has been change from shading mode to Wire frame…

    15. New Slider Volume

    Select / Insert / Slider /

Now, it is time to show you how Pro/ENGINEER helps you to create a slider volume for yourmold design, first, we need to name the new slider volume, let’s call i t ‘slider’ etc…

    16. New Slider Functionality

    Select /

With the new slider functionality available in Pro/ENGINEER Wild Fire, undercut areas canbe easily detected and curves will be created automatically at the edges of the undercutareas which will be used for Volume creation….

    17. New Slider Functionality

Select ‘Quilt 1’ and ‘ Quilt 2’ <press down CTL button to select

    both of them / /

As you can see, I select the two quilts to include for my slider volume ….

Then the Slider volume is created automatically for me…..

    18.  Add Conventi onal SliderVolume

As you can see a Volume has been created from the curves. Now let me show another wayof creating slider Volume using conventional method….

    19. Sketch Slider Volume

Select a sketch plane / select topplane as ref plane / done

Now, Pro/ENGINEER allows me to sketch the shape of the slider that I wanted to add on tothe existing slider volume. Let me select the sketch plane and top ref plane…….

    20. Sketch Slider

Select the 4 edges as ref

    curve/done/ RMB/rectangular/’sketch a rectangularwith a length approx 9-10mm /done

Pro/ENGINEER allows me the select any reference points as guides to my sketch. Let meselect these 4 edges as my ‘guide’ for sketching my slider…

I will use these references to sketch a rectangle for my additional slider volume….

As you can see, my sketched rectangle automatically snaps to the edge ……..as for thelength, maybe let’s give it 10mm….

    21. Slider Depth

Up to surface / select theundercut surface

    /

After I have completed my 2D sketch, Pro/ENGINEER prompts me for a depth, now, Iwanted the depth to be all the way to the undercut surface, let me select this surface as theend of the depth……

As you can see, a rectangular additional volume has been added to my existing slidervolume.

    22. Parting line Creation

    Select automatic parting line icon

/ / Preview to see the curve

The next things I want to do is to create parting surface to my mold design, however I wouldlike to show you how to create a automatic parting curve or Silhouette curve which drivesthe automatic parting surfaces generation….

    23. Parting Surface Creation

    Select /Define /

    / Exclude / OK

As you can see, Pro/ENGINEER creates curves at the all edges of this model and I wouldlike to remove the curves at the undercut areas which I have already created a slider volumefor ….

This is how we remove curves….just have to highlight curve no 4 and tell Pro/ENGINEER toexclude it…

    24. Parting Surface Creation

    Select / Chains tab / 5-1 Upper /‘change’ to lower / ok / ok

Sometimes, we may have problems controlling the location of the parting surface.Pro/ENGINEER can help us to overcome this problem very easily, as you can see, aSilhouette has been created at the upper edge of this hole and I can just change the curveto the lower edge of the hole which makes the parting surface lay at the bottom of the hole.

    25. Parting Surface Creation

    Select / / select the

    Silhouette curve / / OK /

    Done / OK /

Now, I would like to create a parting surface from the Silhouette curve I have just createdminutes ago……

Now, a full parting surface has been created right in front of our very eyes….

The parting surface fills up all the loops and as you can see, the parting surface createdaccording to the location of the Silhouette curves etc….

    26. Splitting Slider Volume

Select / Two Volumes / AllWrkpcs / done / select the slidervolume / ok / ok / enter forthe big volume / enter for the slidervolume

Now, I need to split this big workpiece into 2 pieces, a main Volume and slider volume.

Let’s name the big volume as and the slider volume as

Note: the volume can be any name!!

    27 Splitting Main Volume

    Select again/ Two Volumes/Mold Volume / done / select onQuilt V1 volume >> / close /select on the Main Partingsurface / ok / ok

Classify the two volumes ascore_demo and cav_demo

We now need to split the main Volume into Core and Cavity , let’s select on V1 and thenselect on the Main Parting surface as splitting surface.

Pro/ENGINEER is smart enough to differentiate the upper portion and the lower portion of

V1, let’s name the lower portion as core_demo and cav_demo for the upper portion etc…

    28. Extract Volume to Solid

    Select / press CTL + holddown / select core_demo ,cav_demo and slider_demo / OK

What we need to do now is to ‘convert’ all the volumes into solid models…

This is how easy we can create solid models in the Pro/ENGINEER Mold Designenvironment…

    29. ‘House Keeping’

    Select / selectMold_demo_wrk / Blank / Volume/ Select / Mold_vol_1/ Blank /Parting Surface/ Select /Part_Surf_1/ Blank / Close

‘House Keeping’ process is an optional step here, with this option, I can actually blankVolume, Parting Surfaces and Components which have no impact to my work ….

For this case, I would like to blank the parting surface, volume and workpiece which I don’trequire for my work ….

By blanking these components, it helps to provide a better visibility to my mold design etc….

I can easily simulate the mold opening in this environment.

Let me start with slider component movement with 100mm distance, then cavity insert with

100mm and follow by core insert with negative value -100mm….

As you can see now, the mold insert opens. The core, cavity and slider components were allcreated right in front you very eyes in less then 20 minutes. This shows the user friendlyefficiency of the Pro/ENGINEER Mold Design Package…..

Now, I will be proceeding to Mold Base Assembly Design…..

Let’s start a new EMX file, give a project name and for the part prefixname (it can be any name for Project name as well as the Part Prefix name), as you cansee, EMX creates all the necessary required datum planes and datum points in a skeletonmodel automatically, which also means, all the mold components will be located at their rightlocation automatically….EMX will automatically create a Style that will set all EMX plates to wireframe mode. Thename of this style is specified in the EMX option “ NAME_COMP_DISPLAY” – default nameis Style0001.

In this case, we can easily see that the work insert is bigger then the default mold baseassembly (hasco 156x156) which make no sense at all….

Select supplier name “Futaba_s”. The minimum Size for this moldbase is 150x150 which is

still too small. Select size 350x350. Prompt “Use this size” question with . With thehelp of this advance EMX UI it is easy to verify if the selected moldbase size matches to theoutline of the core insert assembly ….imagine how much time you have already saved intrying to figure out the ratio between the work insert and the main mold base assembly etc

Now you have two options to continue moldbase design: Add plates, locatings rings, leaderpins step by step manually using the Insert functions ...ORLoad a complete moldbase definition from the EMX library. This is what we want to do now. Select File > Load assembly.

EMX has the most up-to-date moldbase library available, from all the branded mold basesuppliers world wide such as FUTABA, HASCO, DME etc (you may name other mold basetype which are not in EMX library now but we can customize it and add it to our standardmoldbase library very easily).Let me select Futaba SC-Type for my design (you can run thru some of the available

Again, EMX is tailor made for the plastic mold designer….especially with the smart UI whichwould definitely help in preventing human mistakes and yet increase design quality etc

highlight AGAIN to EXISTING CUSTOMERS: In EMX4.1 the entire moldbase (allmodifications made in 2D UI) had been regenerated in 3D after the moldbase definitiondialog box was closed. In EMX5.0 this regeneration takes place whenever you’ve commiteda modification. So the regeneration status of the pro/ENGINEER models can easily becontrolled step by step!

    70. Modify Water Curve

    Create a Csys offset from

    Origin_Moldbase  at Z = 45

Reorder so that it comes beforeWaterline.prt

Select Waterline.prt from modeltree, / RMB / Redefine / removeoriginal assembly ref and selectnewly created CSYS (ACS0)

Highlight the datum curve / RMB / Activate / RMB / Edit / Drag the

datum curve to safer position. From 280 to around 110 in widthand length from 140 to 110

Activate top level assembly andregenerate to show updates.

As you can see, one of the water lines has caused a serious interference problem in moldbase assembly…

In our case we will move and modify it.We just need to create another coordinate system to reassemble our waterline to. Reroutethe waterline to reference this coordinate system and highlight and drag the curve to a safelocation ….

All the water components have updated automatically and we have solved the interferenceproblem

    71.  Assemble WaterComponent

    Select EMX 5.0 / Cooling / Define

    / Z94 / M8 X 0.75 / selectCurve/Axis/Point and the crosswaterline curve / Select / Surface / pick side surface of the A plate

    Unhide the MOVING_HALF of themoldbase.

Next, I am going to create a water pipe plug to the curves in my mold assembly...

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to show you how to do a MoldBase openingsimulation in EMX….

EMX will determine the movement of the ejector plate when the entire moldbase assemblysimulates….

As you have seen by now….with EMX you are able to design a mold in a shorter time frameguarantee the quality of work, save time, cost and reduce unforeseen human mistakes…

That’s all for my Mold design and EMX demo…….

Assuming your customer send you an email asking for some ‘simple’ designchanges….Well, I guess customer don’t really understand how tough to change the designmodel and update the mold design works…..

With Pro/ENGINEER mold design and EMX….you are safe!!!!! Let me show you howPro/ENGINEER mold design and EMX handle this kind of design changes…

First, my customer wants me to change the position of the Lens….

Secondly, my customer forgot to add some cut feature for the battery slot etc and theywanted me to add it for them….

On top of it, they also wanted me to reduce the number of holes that appears on the camerasurface….

Lastly, my customer also wanted to have smoother surface on the camera part….bychanging the Datum plane to 15 Degree…you can see…the Complex free form surfacegetting even smoother now…..and it looks even more attractive….

Finally, we just need to update the model….

    75 Model Changes (Optional)

Model Tree / Style id 127 / RMB /unblank / Edit Definition / selectthe ISDX curve / drag and drop /

    /

Model Tree / select Style id 127/

    RMB/ blank

     Again, customer is always right!!!

They also wanted to change the upper ISDX surfaces….to add more points so that we candrag and drop this curve to maximize the flexibility of the ISDX free form surfaces…

As you can see now, the camera part looks completely different from the original version…
