HISTORY OF DIGITAL CAMERA Digital camera technology is directly related to and

evolved from the same technology that recorded television images .

In 1951, the first video tape recorder (VTR) captured live images from television cameras .

Both television/video cameras and digital cameras use a CCD (Charged Coupled Device) to sense light color and intensity.

In August, 1981, Sony released the Sony Mavica electronic still camera, the camera which was the first commercial electronic camera .

The first digital cameras for the consumer-level market were the Apple Quick Take 100 camera (February 17 , 1994).

Then the Kodak DC40 camera (March 28, 1995), the Casio QV-11 (with LCD monitor, late 1995), and Sony's Cyber-Shot Digital Still Camera (1996).

The marketing worked and today digital cameras are everywhere.

Digital Camera Basics

A digital image is just a long string of 1s and 0s that represent all the tiny colored dots -- or pixels -- that collectively make up the image.

It works like a conventional camera.

It has a series of lenses that focus light to create an image of a scene .

Page 10: Camera

CCD AND CMOS The image sensor employed by most digital

cameras is a charge coupled device (CCD). Some cameras use complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) .

Both CCD and CMOS image sensors convert light into electrons .

Once the sensor converts the light into electrons, it reads the value (accumulated charge) of each cell in the image .

Digital Camera Resolution

The amount of detail that the camera can capture is called the resolution .

It is measured in pixels. The more pixels a camera has, the more detail it can capture and the larger pictures can be without becoming blurry or "grainy."

Some typical resolutions include: 256x256 640x480 1216x912 1600x1200 2240x1680 4064x2704 -

Capturing Color

In order to get a full color image, most sensors use filtering to look at the light in its three primary colors .

Once the camera records all three colors, it combines them to create the full spectrum.

ADVANTAGES OF DIGITAL CAMERA One main advantage of digital photography is you

can see the results immediately.

Delete a shot immediately that you do not like .

Making room for more pictures on your memory card .

After shooting a picture, it is immediately available for viewing and can be quickly loaded into a computer for manipulation or printing.

DISADVANTAGE OF DIGITAL CAMERA The cost of digital cameras can be very high.

These cameras are much more sensitive to breaking after being dropped or hit, as the casing is usually made of plastic.

They usually have poor focusing ability in poor or low-light situations.

Most basic digital cameras have a low dynamic range, meaning that less detail is seen in shadows and highlights.
