The coming season is a showcaseof rich repertoire, thrilling guestconductors and soloists, as well asthe chance to applaud our newlyrestructured ensembles. We aredelighted to announce that theCambridge University Orchestra,formerly Cambridge UniversityChamber Orchestra (CUCO), is ournew premier orchestra. For thefirst time, the orchestra will havethe opportunity to performambitious large-scale concerts aswell as the chamber repertoire forwhich CUCO was so renowned.

The Cambridge University Sinfoniatakes after the CUMS SymphonyOrchestra, being conducted bothby professionals and ourexceptional student conductors.We are delighted that from thisyear Sian Edwards will be able tooffer her huge experience and loveof teaching to our studentconductors in a new role asArtistic Advisor.

Highlights of the year’sprogramme are many: theCambridge University Orchestraopens the Season with Bernstein,Saint-Saëns, Milhaud and Mozartunder Tom Poster, beforewelcoming back Sir Mark Elder for

a stunning December concert inKing’s College Chapel of Brahms’First Symphony, Schreker’sscintillating Kammersymphonieand Debussy’s Rhapsody forClarinet. King’s Chapel is also thevenue for the traditionally large-scale January concert, where weare very excited that celebratedconductor Jac van Steen will bemaking his first appearance withCUMS, as the conductor of theVerdi Requiem. What better wayto celebrate the start of our 175thAnniversary year!

It is a packed year too for theother CUMS ensembles, with theWind Orchestra looking forwardto a year under the baton ofstudent conductor William Barnes-McCallum and the CambridgeUniversity Symphony Choruspreparing to sing such choral‘greats’ as Israel in Egypt and theBrahms Requiem. It is anespecially exciting year for theChamber Choir, collaborating withthe Collegium Musicum for anhistorically-informed performanceof Purcell’s Hail, Bright Cecilia onthe Eve of St Cecilia’s Day, andperforming a selection of rareBrahms choral works in April as

part of the second CambridgeBrahms Festival.

And no introduction to the Seasoncould be complete withoutthanking our many supporters,whose steadfast generosity allowsus to put on these concerts andtake student music-making to evergreater heights.

Soprano, Cambridge University Symphony Chorus

Singing with the Chorus is excellent, as it is unique among theUniversity’s choirs in terms of its size and the repertoire itperforms. I have learnt a lot as Student President: it has allowed meto influence how the Chorus is run, as well expanding myUniversity social circles by getting to know members of theChorus. Highlights for me from the past season include singingCopland’s In the Beginning in the stunning environment of TrinityCollege Chapel, as well as the once-in-a-lifetime chance to sing J.S.Bach’s Mass in B minor under Sir Roger Norrington. In theforthcoming season I am particularly looking forward to Handel’simmense choral work Israel in Egypt in the impressive surroundingsof Saffron Hall.

Looking back on my first year at Cambridge, and reflecting on mymusical activity, playing in CUCO was absolutely an essential andexciting experience. Having made the choice, as an aspiringviolinist, to attend university rather than conservatoire, I wasconcerned about being able to continue to gain experience playingin a high-level orchestra. However, CUCO absolutely provided thatand more, with unmatchable opportunities to play ambitiousprogrammes under esteemed professional conductors. What reallymade an impression on me was the sheer dedication and drive fromeach member of the orchestra to create something undeniablyspecial in every concert. There was a tangible sense of being part ofa team and something greater than oneself alone. CUCO is set tobe even more exciting and challenging this year as we will now becalled the Cambridge University Orchestra and will be performingsymphonic repertoire as well as chamber orchestra repertoire.

Being part of the Cambridge University Wind Orchestra over the lastthree years has been a fantastic experience. There is a real sense ofcommunity and belonging in CUWO, and it has been a pleasure toperform together, and to help organise the concerts, socials and tours. I have had the chance to play music from diverse genres in venuesranging from West Road and Trinity Chapel to Oxford, Bristol and evenBelgium. In doing so I have met some great friends and have so manywonderful memories. I am looking forward to the season ahead, whichpromises to be as exciting as ever. Highlights include Márquez DanzonNo.2, Hindemith Symphony for Band and Ponchielli's Trumpet Concertowith soloist Nick Smith. I am particularly looking forward to our summerconcert, celebrating CUWO’s 30th anniversary, which will feature thepremière of an original composition written for CUWO by JonathanWoolgar.

Helena MooreSoprano, Cambridge University Chamber Choir

I was first attracted to the Cambridge University Chamber Choir as itoffered secular music which contrasts with the standard repertoire sungby chapel choirs. It has been inspiring to have masterclasses withdirectors such as Nicholas Mulroy on Baroque arias and fundamentally,the communication of a narrative to an audience. A highlight from lastyear was J.S. Bach’s St John Passion which allowed students to performboth in the choir and as soloists alongside Nicholas Mulroy as Evangelist.This provided a new challenge as the choir performed the Passionwithout a director, giving a huge responsibility to the singers and creatinga more courageous performance. This project, along with others such asVenus and Adonis, involved a collaboration with the specialist Baroqueorchestra Collegium Musicum led by Margaret Faultless. I am particularlylooking forward to performing in the concert of madrigals involving asmall chamber group.

We played in three different venues tofull audiences, including Prague’s own National Museum ofMusic which was a particular highlight, conducted superblyby the CUMS Conducting Scholar John Tothill. Aside fromthe rehearsals and concerts, the orchestra found time tosightsee around the city, visiting the Castle, Palace andJewish Heritage sites as well as enjoying a group trip toBrevnov Brewery and sampling Czech beer!

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY WINDORCHESTRA TOUR GERMANYFollowing our inaugural tour to Belgium last year, CUWOdeparted for a second tour in July 2017 to the Rhineland,Germany. Under conductor Jack Bazalgette, we performeda varied repertoire of wind music, including MalcolmArnold’s jaunty Scottish Dances, Gorb’s energetic YiddishDances and the intense wind orchestra arrangement ofSymphonic Dances from Bernstein’s West Side Story. Theorchestra was received well by an enthusiastic audience inthe wonderful church of St. Peter in the town of Bacharachon the river Rhine, as well as entertaining residents, touristsand passers-by in the spa-centre of Bad Kreuznach. Wealso played in the prestigious church of St. Aposteln in thecentre of Cologne and enjoyed a final concert outdoors inthe gorgeous town square of Linz am Rhein. During theband’s down time, the band members bonded very quicklyand enjoyed several great excursions together. Theseincluded a visit to the stunning Drachenburg Castle atopthe Drachenfels peak, as well as a peaceful cruise along theriver around Cologne.

Music On Tour: Beyond Cambridge


Our HistoryCUMS is one of the oldest and most distinguisheduniversity music societies in the world. It offers a world-class musical education for members of the Universityand local residents, nurturing the great musicians of thefuture and providing performing opportunities for over500 Cambridge musicians every year. The Society hasplayed a pivotal role in British musical life for over 170years. It has educated Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Mark Elder,Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Edward Gardner, ChristopherHogwood and Robin Ticciati, gave the première of worksby Brahms, Holloway, Lutoslawski, Rutter, Saxton andVaughan Williams, and has given generations ofCambridge musicians the experience of performingalongside visiting conductors and soloists includingBritten, Dvorák, Kodaly, Menuhin and Tchaikovsky. Sincethe 1870s, CUMS has enjoyed the leadership of several ofBritain’s finest musicians, including Sir Charles VilliersStanford, Sir David Willcocks, Sir Philip Ledger, and, from1983 to 2009, Stephen Cleobury. In 2009, StephenCleobury assumed a new role as Principal Conductor ofCambridge University Symphony Chorus, Sir RogerNorrington was appointed as Principal Guest Conductorand a series was launched to expose CUMS members toa succession of world-class visiting conductors. In 2010,CUMS entered another new phase when it merged withthe Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra andCambridge University Music Club. In October 2010, theSociety launched the Cambridge University LunchtimeConcerts – a new series of weekly chamber recitals atWest Road Concert Hall showcasing our finest musicaltalent. In 2011 it welcomed the Cambridge UniversityChamber Choir, which is directed by Martin Ennis, David

Lowe and Nicholas Mulroy. In 2014, the CambridgeUniversity Jazz Orchestra and the Cambridge UniversityNew Music Ensemble joined CUMS as associateensembles. 2017 saw a restructuring of the CUMSorchestras, with the formation of two ensembles(Cambridge University Orchestra and CambridgeUniversity Sinfonia) from the earlier three, with the aim ofcreating a greater number of opportunities for studentsto play under some of the best professional conductors.CUMS continues to provide opportunities for our fineststudent soloists and conductors by awarding conductingscholarships and concerto prizes, and it encourages newmusic by running a composition competition andpremièring at least one new work each year. Recenthighlights have included Wagner’s Parsifal (Act III)conducted by Sir Mark Elder, a recording of The Epic ofEverest’s original score for the British Film Institute, J.S.Bach's B minor Mass conducted by Sir Roger Norringtonand Verdi’s Otello (Act I) conducted by Richard Farnes.

Since it was founded in 1843, CUMS has provided uniqueopportunities for successive generations of Cambridgemusicians.
