4 Unit 1A: Core activity 1.1 Hundreds, tens and ones
Let’s investigateA set of place value cards has been used to makenine three-digit numbers. Here are seven of the numbers.
Which place value cards are missing?
How many different three-digit numbers can you make withthe missing place value cards?
Does it matter which digit cards are the missing ones?
Will you always be able to make that many numbers? Why?
Use a set of place value cards to make nine three-digit numbers.
Show a friend seven of the numbers and challenge them totell you the other two numbers. If the numbers are incorrect, but your friend has identied the correct cards, give them
another try to guess your numbers.

FAQs
The Cambridge University Press Primary series seemsto be written to a high level. Why is this?
This is because the series follows the globallyrecognised Cambridge International Curriculum.Although it may initially appear challenging, theskills-led, enquiry-based approach means thatteachers will be able to help their pupils to attain theappropriate international standards of achievement.
Is there enough material to last for a whole schoolyear? Is it too much material for the school year?
The course is very exible; it may be used alongsideor in support of other curricula, and the thematic/
unit approach allows schools to adapt it to their needs. At what level is each stage?
As Cambridge Primary Science and Mathematics arealso ‘language controlled’, they correspond to levelsA1 to A2. Although the language levels do notcomprise the content, they do reect the language
skills needed to access the content.
