Welcome

As Executive Principal, I warmly welcome you to the Cambridge Primary Education Trust (CPET) prospectus published in Summer 2016.

CPET is an outstanding partnership of like-minded schools committed to offering an exceptional learning experience for all pupils and, in turn, preparing them for a successful future.

The Trust comprises Histon & Impington Infant School, Histon & Impington Junior School and Hatton Park Primary School in Longstanton – and we are passionate about sharing vision, best practice and resources to deliver the best possible primary education for our children.

Our excellent record of school improvement and innovation in teaching and learning also puts CPET in a position to expand further. This ambition is demonstrated in our successful bid to run a new primary school in Cambridge’s Trumpington Ward, which will open in Autumn 2017.

Our overarching role as a Trust is to manage the vision and leadership of our member schools and to develop partnerships between them, as well as working with other local trusts, such as CMAT and the other CTSN partners.

As a Trust, we place considerable emphasis on recruiting and investing in excellent teachers and staff, providing opportunities for development and promotion within CPET schools. This commitment enables us to retain staff and provide a stable learning environment as well as seek out talented newly-qualified teachers.

All of our schools are central to the life of their local community, providing every pupil with the opportunity not just to receive an excellent primary education, but to begin to understand how healthy communities can flourish when each person plays an active part in serving others.

School life isn’t just about the classroom. CPET schools offer a wide range of after-school activities, community interaction, residential and educational visits to enrich our children’s education.

I hope you enjoy reading about CPET – who we are, what we offer, and how our approach as a Trust benefits our children, our staff, and the schools and communities we operate in.

Our vision and ethos

Vision:

“To develop a self-sustaining partnership of schools that provides an outstanding education for all our pupils by offering a broad and balanced curriculum whilst remaining embedded in the local community.”

Ethos:

• Children learn best when they are happy, secure, respected and valued as individuals

• Learning should be positive, enjoyable and rooted in life experiences

• Through a shared language and approach we aim to nurture a child’s emotional and social development

• The learning environment needs to be inspiring and interactive

• We want our children to become increasingly independent learners, able to celebrate their successes, reflect on their learning and identify their next steps

• We encourage children to develop respect for themselves, for others and for their environment

Our approach

CPET schools are busy and vibrant places where we encourage children to flourish across the curriculum and to achieve their potential. Our expectations are high and the standard of care is outstanding.

Our teaching and non-teaching staff are fully committed to providing the best for the children. We encourage our children to develop respect, open-mindedness, honesty and tolerance for others. For each individual child we will seek to maximise their confidence, self-esteem and independence.

Opportunities to organise educational events and other activities that can be shared by pupils of all CPET schools are sought wherever possible. The provision of extra-curricular activities is actively encouraged to enable children to enjoy varied experiences whilst at school.

Staff from all the schools work together to share best practice and resources as well as support each other in planning and evaluation activities.

Employees are encouraged to develop their skills and experience. Where appropriate, professional development activities are co-ordinated and implemented across CPET.

In summary:

• Through our broad and balanced curriculum and extra-curricular activities, CPET pupils experience a distinctive ‘whole child’ approach to development leading to high levels of attainment and progression to first-choice schools.

• Through our National Teaching School status, CPET teachers are given unrivalled opportunities for professional development with collaboration and cross-school working leading to an enriched educational experience for children in CPET schools and beyond.

• Through our community engagement programme, and the work of teachers, governors, parents and pupils, CPET schools support the needs of the local communities.

Our journey

Following extensive teaching experience working in schools in London, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, Lesley Birch was appointed Headteacher at Histon & Impington Junior School in 2001.

Lesley became a National Leader of Education in 2009, and subsequently the Junior School was designated as a National Support School, working with other schools to enhance and improve educational standards.

Lesley helped pave the way towards the formation of CPET on 1st December 2012 and was appointed as Executive Principal in September 2014.

CPET schools have subsequently benefited from the freedoms and flexibilities of academy status, sharing best practice and working together in order to secure excellence for all pupils.

We are proud of our values-based culture that encourages strong partnerships between schools.

We strive towards partnerships which are mutually beneficial and make the most of the individual strengths that each of our schools brings to the organisation.

Our success in the realisation of our vision was fully endorsed by an Ofsted report on one of our schools, Hatton Park Primary, which had been designated as ‘requiring improvement’ prior to joining CPET and achieved a ‘good’ rating from Ofsted in all aspects in May 2014.

A new primary school in Cambridge’s Trumpington Ward will open in Autumn 2017. CPET, as the lead sponsor, will work in collaboration with Parkside Federation Academies to operate the school.

Histon & Impington Infant School

Histon & Impington Infant School has an increasing roll and is currently around 300 children from Foundation Stage through to Year 2. Our school nurtures the progress of every child through a creative curriculum. Independent learning is encouraged through a wide variety of rich, challenging and exciting activities. Acquisition of knowledge, skills and reflective thinking are fundamental to every child’s achievement.

Histon & Impington Junior School

Histon & Impington Junior School has an increasing roll and is currently around 370 children from Year 3 through to Year 6. Our school is a busy and vibrant place where we encourage children to flourish across the curriculum. Our expectations are high and the standard of care outstanding. Staff are committed to providing the best for the children. Extra-curricular provision is extensive as can be seen by the range of clubs available.

Hatton Park Primary School

Hatton Park Primary School is situated in Longstanton, Cambridgeshire and has an increasing roll which is currently around 210 children from Reception through to Year 6. We have plans to expand for the 2016-17 academic year onwards for a larger intake of pupils with new and improved facilities. High standards of education allow our pupils to flourish in a creative, friendly and supportive environment. Both pre-school provision and after school activities are popular and highly regarded.

Curriculum

CPET aims to provide a broad and balanced education for all children in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum.

Our focus on teaching and learning is on the planning and delivery of a curriculum that is creative, fun, enjoyable and relevant to daily living.

The curriculum is taught in a variety of ways, reflecting the needs of different curriculum areas and of the children themselves at their different stages of development.

The core curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ knowledge, skills, concepts and attributes and encompasses the following areas that all children are entitled to experience. This includes all the core subjects for primary and early years’ provision:

Extra-curricular activities

Staff, parents and trained instructors run a wide variety of before school, lunchtime and after-school clubs for the children at all CPET schools.

The majority of CPET’s pupils undertake some form of extra-curricular activity. These include:

Educational and residential visits are both an important part of the curriculum as they broaden and enrich children’s learning. Popular visits include local walks, residential trips, day visits to museum and environmental centres, and sporting events.

All pupils are encouraged to lead healthy lifestyles and join in competitive and collaborative activities. Annual dance, arts, music and sports festivals are held for all schools to take part in.

Community support

Through our community engagement programme, and the work of teachers, governors, parents and pupils, CPET schools are always supporting the needs of their local communities.

Examples of community and school links are:

• Jointly organising and hosting community festival days

• Providing dance displays, choir and orchestra contributions for community events

• School choirs performing for elderly residential homes

• School children actively participating in surveys to give their ideas for redevelopment of a village play area

• Working in partnership with village sports charity Friends of Histon and Impington Recreation to promote hockey, table tennis and fencing activities at Histon & Impington recreation ground

• Providing school sports fields for mini-league team training sessions and collaboration with local providers for early years, childcare and holiday clubs

• Providing a proactive, supportive role in current village initiative for teenage wellbeing

• Raising funds for local, national and international charities

• Having strong links with local libraries to further literacy and community involvement

Delivering school improvement

School improvement is supported by a very robust partnership between all CPET schools.

The following information has been provided as an endorsement of our work by Nigel Battey, School Improvement Advisor:

“Lesley Birch, Histon & Impington Junior School and more recently, CPET, have been at the forefront of the self-improving school led system for a number of years, positively impacting on systemic school improvement.

There is a clear understanding and demonstrable impact of how school collaboration enhances school improvement and helps to raise achievement for both pupils and staff in schools.

Lesley has been a National Leader of Education (NLE) since 2009. Cambridgeshire Local Authority commissioned Lesley’s system leader experience and expertise to support a number of schools in challenging circumstances. One of these schools was Hatton Park Primary School.

Following a poor Ofsted outcome, Lesley was brokered in to support school improvement. Following the resignation of the Headteacher, CPET was established in December 2012, with Lesley acting as Executive Headteacher at Hatton Park and a Head of School appointed.

As an NLE, Lesley was quick to identify and address key issues, involving other key staff from Histon & Impington Junior School in developing expertise and teaching and leadership capacity at Hatton Park. In May 2014 Hatton Park achieved a ‘good’ rating from Ofsted in all aspects.”

Delivering teaching excellence

National Teaching School status:

CPET is proud to have National Teaching School status.

Through this status all CPET teachers are given unrivalled opportunities for professional and career development. Collaboration and cross-school working lead to an enriched educational experience for children in CPET schools and beyond.

Executive Principal Lesley Birch plays a leading role regionally in the self-improving school led system. She is the East of England representative on the National Teaching Schools Council, seeking to raise attainment across the region.

Lesley was instrumental in organising the first Eastern Region Teaching Schools Council system leadership conference, with 180 delegates in attendance. Impact evaluations from the day were very positive.

Cambridge Teaching Schools’ Network:

In March 2012, Histon & Impington Junior School was part of a successful Cohort 2 Teaching School application.

This was a partnership application, together with Swavesey Village College (part of Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust) and Parkside Federation, forming the Cambridge All-Through Teaching School Alliance (CATTSA).

Following this designation, CATTSA then formed a partnership with two other local existing Teaching School Alliances to form the Cambridge Teaching School Network (CTSN).

Histon & Impington Junior School and CPET play a pivotal role in the success of the CTSN.

Lesley Birch acts as Chair of the Steering Group and also sits on both the School-to-School Support and Research & Development strategy groups.

Within CTSN, Histon & Impington Junior School is the only primary-age range lead school.

In the last three years, CTSN has engaged with over 70 primary schools, impacting across all aspects of the National College for Teaching and Leadership ‘Big 6’ Teaching School responsibilities.

Training and development

As part of CTSN, schools within CPET helped to expand Initial Teacher Training (ITT) work into the primary phase and have successfully recruited for trainee teachers for this age group.

Taking the lead and working with partner schools, CPET schools delivered 10 salaried and 18 non-salaried School Direct ITT places in 2015-16.

Trainee teachers spend time in classrooms alongside our own outstanding teaching staff and observe, support in, and lead lessons.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is also a strong focus of CPET. We have teachers on the highly-regarded ‘Improving Teacher Programme’ and ‘Outstanding Teacher Programme’ that are both nationally-recognised improving teaching quality professional development programmes.

Assessment and reporting

CPET ensures that all children are regularly assessed during the year using a variety of methods including formal tests, self-assessment by children and feedback from the teacher so that the children know their next steps.

Assessment helps the teacher plan future work and provides information for achievable and rewarding targets to be set.

Ongoing assessment also identifies any potential difficulties which are then dealt with.

All CPET schools aim to maintain a continuous dialogue with parents and pupils in order to develop excellent relationships that we believe ensure successful progress.

A significant aspect of this dialogue is regular reporting to parents of the academic progress of their child in each curriculum area.

Health and welfare

Support services

These include: school link nurses, family workers, educational psychologists, educational welfare officers, community police officers and primary specialist support teachers for children with special educational needs. They all have an important role to play in the life of CPET schools.

Our policy is in accordance with the Education Act 2002, which states that all schools must make arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

Safeguarding and child protection procedures

Under the Education Act 2002 schools must make arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of children.

CPET endeavours to provide a safe and welcoming environment where all children are respected and valued. CPET and its schools are alert to signs of abuse and neglect and will follow Local Safeguarding Children Board procedures to ensure that children receive appropriate and effective support and protection.

Leadership and governance

CPET’s Board of Trustees is responsible for overall strategic management of the constituent schools. Operational management is delegated to the Executive Principal and Headteachers.

Financial and personnel issues are addressed by committees of CPET’s board with each school managing its own budget.

Each school has a group of governors with responsibility devolved from CPET for curriculum and standards in the school. Good communications between the Board, its committees and the local governors is a key feature of CPET.

Training and personal development for governors is encouraged and opportunities for governors to participate in joint training and other events are sought on a regular basis.
