I have attached a map of the school with all classroom names on it so that you can find the rooms as you need them.
Contacting Your Child’s Teacher There are many very good reasons for parent to want to be in touch with their child’s teacher. However sometimes parent’s find it difficult to get hold of teachers because a teacher’s day is so full. Parents are welcome to have quick two-minute discussions with teachers before and after school, however these need to be short and to the point about issues that are relatively simple. For example – Jimmy has a bit of a cold and is out of sorts, or there is a change to pick-up routines etc. The reason for this is that before school, teachers are usually preparing their classes for the day or are in meetings. If you want to discuss an issue in depth you are unlikely to walk away satisfied because the teacher will have his/her mind on the day ahead and won’t be able to give you their full attention. The same applies in the afternoon, although we do have a policy of asking all teachers to be outside their classrooms for the first 15 minutes at the end of the day. We ask that you don’t try to speak with teachers once they are in their classes or when they are walking students to class because teachers have a legal duty of care to the supervision of their students and your quick question may distract them from this. If what you want to discuss is highly important ie ; discipline issue or you want to know about how your child is progressing we strongly recommend you make an appointment. That way the teacher has time to prepare for the meeting and to gather the information ahead of time. You are more likely to find the discussions satisfying and informative if you block in a time with the teacher than if you catch a teacher on the fly and he/she answers your inquiry off the top of their heads. To make an appointment please ring the office on 02 4721 2556 or alternatively contact the teacher through the email address provided.
School Communication We try very hard at our school to communicate with our community in as many different ways as possible in an effort to reach everyone. We communicate through: Facebook – make sure you friend the official site - there is a default one out there Newsletter (Even weeks) SMS - we need up – to –date contact numbers for this School Website; www.cambridgpk-
p.schools.nsw.edu.au. School Newsletter is published each fortnight on this site E-mail: [email protected]. Each teacher also has a Departmental email address that you can contact them on. The format is usually first [email protected] eg [email protected]. If you are unsure of the teacher’s first name use the general school email address above and it will be forwarded on to the teacher. Just put the teacher’s name in the subject box. School App (see attached information for update) Letters home – (Mostly sent home on Thursdays so keep an eye out for these in your child’s bag – even for Year 5 & 6 students!!) 2018 School Calendar
Families will have received the 2018 School Calendar last year. It covers most major events and approximate costings where applicable. If for some reason you don’t receive one, we have also uploaded it to the school website at www.cambridgpk-p.schools.nsw.edu.au. Or ask at the front office.
First Aide at School
All of our staff are trained to administer first aide at
school when children are injured. That training is
updated regularly. Having said that please note that
we are unable to treat cuts and abrasions with
anything other than water, a band-aide and an
icepack. This is to prevent the possibility of causing
allergic reactions to treatment. We are unable to
administer over the counter medications like
Panadol. So it’s not that we don’t care, or don’t want
to do more. It’s just that legally we are unable to any
more than water, band aides and an icepack.

Homework at CPPS
At our school, we believe that homework benefits
students by complementing classroom learning,
fostering good study habits and providing an
opportunity for students to be responsible for their
own learning. For the last few years, we have run an
Opt-Out policy. However, we will no longer be
running that policy because it really has had no
impact on student engagement in homework. What
we found was that 95% of parents opted into the
homework program but then many students didn’t
participate despite their parent’s indication that they
wanted homework for their children. Homework will
be offered to all students in 2018 and we encourage
parents to support their children in completing the
homework. Teachers will encourage student
participation and recognition will be given to those
students who regularly participate in the program. If
your circumstances are such that you do not want
your child to participate in homework, please
provide a written statement to that effect for the
classroom teacher.

Next Issue: What is the PBL level System about and
how does it work?
Kindergarten News Week 1 has been wonderful getting to know our
new Kindergarten students. We have had a few
tears but mostly lots of fun and games and “getting
to know you” activities. They have settled really well
into their new environment and are already making
lots of new friends. Your child may not remember
their new friends names because sometimes it can
be more than 1 friend and names are sometimes
not worth asking when playing a game of chasings
on the lower grass or building with Lego in the
library or in passive play. Our teachers try to ensure
all students have a friend to play with and they all
are getting along beautifully.
A reminder that we would like the school supplies to
be brought in as soon as possible. The most
important things teacher require are the plastic
envelopes for their home readers etc. and the paint
shirts. Painting in Kindy can be sometimes very
messy and buying uniforms is very expensive. It
doesn’t need to be a purchased one, it can be an
old T shirt of a grown up (so that it is big and they
can put it on themselves).
We will be going to Healthy Harold in Week 4.
Please make payment for this at the front office.
This program is about a Healthy Lifestyle and
personal safety. Students really do get a lot from
this experience and is followed up in class after the
excursion as well. This is one of 2 excursions we do
in Kindergarten, the other being to the farm in Term
3.
Again, welcome to Kindergarten 2018! Please feel
free to contact your child's teacher or myself at any
time. The following are our email addresses if you
prefer to do so and this is sometimes easier for our
teachers to respond.

Stage1 News We would like to take this opportunity to welcome
our families and many of the new families that have
joined our school this year. All our classes are
settling in well and we are enjoying meeting and
getting to know our new class members.
Thank you to all the parents and carers who have
already purchased the necessary equipment for the
school year.
This year our Stage 1 teachers will be training or
continuing to updating their training and skills in the
L3 Program: Language, Learning and Literacy. L3 is
an effective research-based literacy program. It
aims at complementing the daily literacy program,
without withdrawal, and increasing opportunities for
students with diverse learning needs to achieve
required outcomes. L3 supports the development of
informed, systematic, explicit instruction based on
data to target reading and writing.
We will also be continuing the Get Reading Right
Synthetic Phonics Program. This program involves
the synthesising, or blending of phonemes, (sounds)
to make a word, enabling children to read words.
The Life Education notes were sent home last week.
If you did not receive one please pick one up from
the office. The visits are timetabled over a 3 week
period. Please make the payment at the office as
soon as possible for your child to participate in this
valuable learning experience.
Please remember that we are always available if
you have any questions. If you need to speak with
your child’s teacher about any concerns please
contact the office to make an appointment.

Preschool News
Welcome to all our families, we look forward to
an exciting year learning with your children.
All the children are settling in well and adjusting
to the new preschool routines and their new
environment. The children are engaging with all
experiences both indoors and outdoors and
developing their social skills with peers.
Please remember
To label your child’s belongings including
water bottles, lunch boxes, food
containers and hats. We encourage
healthy eating and drinking, please limit
sending juice in water bottles and
remember to put an ice bricks/pak into the
lunch boxes.
We request that parents limit the inclusion
of nuts, eggs and seafood as we have an
anaphylaxis child attending our preschool
with severe allergies to these products,
and we would like to avoid contact with
these foods.
To sign your child in and out each day.
This is very important for safety reasons.
A sunscreen station is available for
parents to apply sunscreen before your
child enters the preschool, please tick on
the sign on sheet that it has been applied.
We are always in need of empty boxes like
cereal/tissues for craft so feel free to send any
in.
Please speak with any educators if you have
any concerns or if you have any questions, we
are very happy to help.
Thankyou

Stage 2 News Welcome families to the 2018 school year. On
behalf of the Stage 2 team, I’d like to welcome back
returning families whilst also extending a warm
greeting to all our new families who have joined
Cambridge Park Public School this year. We look
forward to working with you and your enthusiastic
children to make this year one to remember!
Our students have made an excellent start to the
term and have settled quickly into their new
classrooms. It has been so enjoyable getting to
know our new crop of students. Already the signs
for the year to come are so exciting!
All teachers on our stage would like to thank our parents for how well-prepared and well-equipped our students have returned to school. Your efforts to ensure your children have everything they need to jump straight into learning has made a significant difference with how smoothly we have moved into our learning. Thank you! If you are unsure of what your child requires please use this link: http://www.cambridgpk-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/documents/12173795/12180338/stage_2_requirements_2018.pdf which provides a list of the requirements for Stage 2 in 2018. We have a fantastic team this year in Stage 2 and
their names and contact details are listed below.
We understand that parents are extremely busy and
often the time to catch teachers before or after
school does not match with your work and home
commitments. Should you need to clarify anything,
to arrange an appointment or just to touch base and
say hello, feel free to send us an email anytime. We
endeavour to respond to all emails within 48 hours
and if we cannot answer your question in that time,
we will still respond to let you know we are working
on finding the answers you need and provide a
rough timeframe on when we might know the
answer.
Emailing is a much more efficient and effective way
of making contact with your teachers. Messages to
the front office are either written as messages and
placed in our pigeon hole or you are instructed to
leave a message on our answering machine. Emails
go straight to our work inbox and quite often you will
get the in depth answers you need much faster.
3/4 Composite Class As our school grows, student numbers meant we needed a composite class to ensure class sizes stay as small as possible. This year, the Sharks class are a Year 3 and Year 4 composite class. I have received questions about how students were chosen to be in the composite class. The answer to that is, students were chosen using the exact same criteria we use to choose the makeup of all classes. Academic ability and academic needs, personal relationships with other students in the class and the expertise, personality type or learning style of each teacher and student are taken into account to benefit each student in having a great year where they mature and progress academically, socially and emotionally. The composite class is like any other class in that work is not set as ‘Year 4 work’ or ‘Year 3 work’, all learning tasks are set to best meet the needs of each students, whatever level that may be and if work needs to be extended or simplified to assist each student to learn best, that is precisely what will occur. Looking forward to a fantastic year working with you
all.

STAGE 3 NEWS Welcome all students, parents and carers to Stage
3, 2018. I hope your children have settled well into
their classes. All of our classes are Stage based
and include the following teachers:
Bilbies - Mrs Jobson Butterflies – Mrs Hansen Dingoes – Ms Poole Redbacks – Mr O’Neill and Mrs Sanders Eagles – Mrs Richards and Mrs Wiggins Stage 3 have an exciting year ahead with lots of interesting content being taught. In Term 1, some of our main focuses are:
Mappen (Literacy, Geography) The children will
be learning about: The United Nations Rights of
Children and the ways in which organisations help
children around the world. They will research social
justice issues and learn about emotive language.
The children will be involved in researching a third
world country and presenting their information at a
humanitarian expo. This expo will be open to
parents and carers and aims to educate us about
poverty and the lives of others around the world.
Science: Stage 3 are focusing on the Design
Process aspect of our Science Syllabus. They will
be involved in working in activities built around the
story of a shipwrecked traveller stranded on a desert
island. The students will complete 5 different
challenges to help them get back to civilisation.
Maths: In Stage 3, we have Math Groups where
students are placed in classes based on their ability
levels. We find these classes to be highly effective
as we can focus on supporting them in progressing
in numeration. Our other strands of Maths involving
Measurement, Chance and Data are taught in their
classes.
PDHPE: The whole school is involved in a Child
Protection Program. Stage 3 will also participate in
PSSA and School Sport on Fridays.
Writing Groups – Like our Maths Groups, children
are broken into groups based on their writing skills.
HOMEWORK:
Homework will be handed out on Friday and due the
following Thursday. Each teacher will set their own
homework for their class. If there are any issues
surrounding homework please do not hesitate to
speak to the class teacher.
YEAR 6 Notes have gone home for Year 6 shirts. If you wish to purchase a shirt please bring your note back to the front office, indicating how many shirts you wish to purchase. Notes need to be back before we can place an order. If you do not wish to purchase a shirt, can you also send the note back indicating this.
EQUIPMENT Please ensure that your child comes to school each day ready to learn. It is important that they have blue and/or black pens, lead pencil, rubber, ruler and glue. If there are any issues around providing this equipment, please come and see me.
PSSA The teams running for summer PSSA sports include: Oztag, Basketball and Softball. Summer PSSA does require a commitment throughout Term 1 and Term 4. It is important that if your child is selected and commits to a team, that they are able to pay the fee and commit to playing in both Terms. Notes will be coming home shortly. I am looking forward to a fun and exciting year with lots of learning to be had. Mrs Hansen Stage 3 Supervisor
