Meet the artists in

their studios

Cambridge Open Studios exists for the purposes of promoting the making of original works of art and craft, and to provide an opportunity for the public to become involved in the arts by meeting artists in their studios, seeing their work and how it is produced.

You can see the work of our artists and plan your visit on our website.

2011It was Julia Ball in the early 1960s who unwittingly sowed the idea for Cambridge Open Studios by opening her home in Beche Road, Cambridge to coincide with the then lavish Cambridge Festival. I lived nearby on the busy Newmarket Road, living in the kitchen, painting in my bedroom, framing in the front room, while ignoring the front bedroom for its invasive traffic and the bus stop perfectly sited for gaping upper-deckers. Plein air painting was my release. With worthier premises I might well have followed Julia’s example.

For my sins and sustenance I had taken up reviewing Art for the Cambridge News, taking in the first few open studios until, with so many gallery shows during the festival, I had to leave them out. Daylight was for painting, the late evening for writing and I seldom took my copy in to the Cambridge News offices before midnight, a suspicious time to be lurking about.

Moving back to my native village was such a relief and my lovely partner, Jean, urged me to join the burgeoning Open Studios now that I had the premises to give welcome, but I postponed it for preferring the weekends free for our various excursions. Sadly then, it was her premature death that persuaded me to join.

It works best for me using all four weekends, but this deprives me of the opportunity of seeing how my fellow artists prepare themselves. But visitors fill me in and leave me in no doubt about the miracles of creativity within easy reach – and not only during the month of July. We are individuals, uncompetitive, welcoming, self-supporting friends. Monet was still painting when I was born! Longevity aside, please don’t miss me out!

Anthony Day

Anthony Day and Christine Fox, another founder member of Cambridge Open Studios, were both recently made Honorary Members as a tribute to their dedication and long years of service to the organisation.

Cambridge Open Studios 2011

In the 1960s, artists in Cambridge were among the first in the country to throw open their studio doors and invite local people in to discover how original works of art and crafts are made. This was part of a movement to demystify the arts, take them off their elite pedestals, reinvigorate and democratise them and make them available to all. Now, open studio events take place all over the UK and in many other countries. Anthony Day, whose welcome to our Open Studios 2011 is on the front cover flap of this guide, was one of that original group and still opens his studio to the public every July.

Back then, Tony lived in Cambridge; now he lives in Wicken, and Cambridge Open Studios has spread out in a similar way, to encompass an area stretching from Ely, Littleport and Prickwillow in the North to Saffron Walden and Great Dunmow in the South, from Over and Huntingdon in the West, to Soham and Fordham in the East.

The yellow flags flying outside each venue have become a fixture in the cultural landscape, and this year 240 artists are taking part in over 200 locations, with a good half of those sites being ‘out of town’. Moreover, in an era of cuts and belt-tightening, Cambridge Open Studios is completely free. Visiting our studios will not cost you a penny in Council or Income Tax as we receive no grants, no hand-outs and no subsidies.

What links all those studios and workshops, and the people who work in them, is the idea that art, craft and creativity should be very much part of everyday life and of local communities. Open Studios is about forging a lasting relationship between local people and local makers, and about making art affordable and open to all. It is our opportunity to welcome you into our studios and your opportunity to purchase or commission a piece of work direct from its creator. That way you can help us survive and thrive as an essential and integral creative force in Cambridgeshire life.

So enjoy exploring our studios and take something home to mark the occasion!

The In-town map, centred on Cambridge, can be found on the inside front flap. For maps of Out-of-town studios, see the inside back flap and page 60.

Note that the map is for reference only. For more accuracy , please refer to:

the Cambridge A–Z Street Atlas and/or the Cambridge Open Studios website (www.camopenstudios.co.uk).

Studio numbers: the two main maps (In-town and Out-of-town) follow the divisions of City and District Councils. The city wards are printed at the head of each page to guide you in finding the studio numbers.

Shared studios: these have a single number on the map, but the entry number in the guide for each artist at the shared studio is differentiated by a letter (e.g. 6A, 6B).

Workingstudio

Where this logo appears by a guide entry it indicates that visitors can expect to see the studio in which the artists produce their work, or a recreated studio environment.

A working studio will have evidence of one or more of the following:

• work in progress

• materials and equipment

• demonstration and/or display of the techniques used

• work for sale and/or on show

All artists participating in Cambridge Open Studios will have work for sale irrespective of whether they are a working studio or an exhibition. A number of artists will also have postcards and/or greetings cards for sale.

The Out-of-town map can be found on the inside back flap.

Ely, Saffron Walden and Fulbourn maps are presented on page 60.

For a map of Cambridge In-town studios, see the inside front flap.

Note that the maps are for reference only. For more accuracy, please refer to:

O/S Landranger Series maps and/or the Cambridge Open Studios website (www.camopenstudios.co.uk).

Where this logo appears by a guide entry, it indicates that visitors can expect to see the studio in which the artists produce their work or a recreated studio environment.

A working studio will have evidence of one or more of the following:

• work in progress

• materials and equipment

• demonstration and/or display of the techniques used

• work for sale and/or on show

This year’s event has been made possible once again by the efforts of Cambridge Open Studios artists, many of whom have invested time and effort into making the July events a success.

Over the past year, we have continued with the process of development and consolidation of the website that was initiated in 2009. It is gratifying to note how far we have come, turning Cambridge Open Studios from a loss-making, near bankrupt organisation, back into a vibrant, artist-led community, entirely self-funded, which, in the present climate of cuts and general tightening of budgets, is an enviable position to be in. We have also welcomed back many members who left us in recent years for a variety of reasons and have signed up a substantial contingent of new ones who bring fresh enthusiasm and ideas to the group. Many members, old and new, have volunteered for tasks and have shown great initiative and drive. We are indebted to Roger Coleman, our new Chairman, for his considerable efforts and work on the implementation of the management plan and of the continued development of the website.

Thanks are also due to the various groups within the Management Team: Publicity, Website, Guide Production and Distribution. This short statement expresses gratitude for months of concentrated work, and COS could not exist without the time and effort of the individuals concerned.

We also thank all the shops, galleries, libraries and other outlets for kindly helping Cambridge Open Studios distribute 40,000 copies of the Guide, and to all those who have given press and media coverage of Cambridge Open Studios.

Many thanks to our retiring Chairman, Michael Wood.

Weekend (1) July 2 – 3Weekend (2) July 9 – 10Weekend (3) July 16 – 17Weekend (4) July 23 – 2411 am – 6 pm

2011

It was Julia Ball in the early 1960s who unwittingly sowed the idea for Cambridge Open Studios by opening her home in Beche Road, Cambridge to coincide with the then lavish Cambridge Festival.
