Ashley Agans Principal Dear Students, Parents and Guardians, I am excited to welcome you to the Cambridge Course Catalog for the 2021-2022 school year! The information in this catalog is meant to help you make decisions on which courses you wish to pursue. Each course has a brief description created by the teachers who actually teach them. Each course lists out pre-requisite courses as well as information on the amount of time and effort needed to be successful in the class. While it is important that you read through this information closely, it is also important that you refer to the Fulton County placement guidelines for information on requirements for graduation. You can find the Fulton County Placement guidelines on our website at www.cambridgehs.org under the Academics tab by hitting Course Registration Resources. This is a small step in your academic career but in all things, it is important to have every piece of information, so you feel confident in your choices. One of my favorite things about high school is the experience. I know you have heard me say this many times. So, as you peruse the catalog and look up the courses you are interested in, I encourage you to also make a list of the activities you wish to pursue outside of classes. Students and parents/guardians, I highly recommend you go through this catalog and your goals as a family. Consider your short-term goals for graduation, your desire to pursue talents and options that interest you, and your long terms goals of college and career. Consider that this is an opportunity to pick courses that provide balance for all three of these goals and maximize your high school experience. Students, if you choose to go to college, learning how to navigate and pick courses of study towards your degree is a valuable skill. Every college, university, and institution of higher learning has a course catalog. In the next few pages, I have put together a guide to help you through the scheduling process. Please keep in mind that this is a basic guideline for general education students. You may be in a different place, and that is ok. This is just to give you a “jumping off point”, help you build a skill you will need in the future, and get you thinking about your course selections. Finally, once you have completed your selections, discuss them as a family. Then, reach out to teachers, counselors, and/or administrators for their input. Our Cambridge faculty and staff have valuable experience, advice, and insight to offer you on your journey. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need help or guidance. For some of you, this will be your first step into Cambridge. For others, it will be the final selections in your high school career. For all of you, be mindful in your choices. 9th Sample Schedule:

Algebra I – 1 credit

Things to consider for 9th grade schedule: Honors versus on-level class options. Health is a class needed in order to get an ADAP card (needed to receive your driver’s license) and to meet the graduation requirement. World Geography is a Social Studies elective, but many find it to be extremely helpful for World History (a required course in 10th grade). Some students do not take Health/World Geography in order to fit in World Language and an Elective. If you choose this option, know that you will need to take Health (and the ADAP card) to get a driver’s license when you turn 16. 10th Sample Schedule:

Things to consider for 10th grade schedule: Honors versus AP versus on-level class options. Some students take Health and World Geography in 9th grade with an elective, then start a World Language in 10th grade with an elective. Science begins to have options. Chemistry is a difficult science and different from any science class students have taken up to this point. Some will want the challenge; some will want to grow their math and science skills and will therefore opt for Environmental Science or another science elective. 11th Sample Schedule:

Chemistry or Physics or other options – 1 credit

US History – 1 credit

World Language Elective – 1 credit

CTAE/Fine Arts Elective – 1 credit

Things to consider for 11th grade schedule: Honors versus AP versus Dual Enrollment versus on-level class options. There are many more AP options once you hit 11th grade as well as Dual Enrollment options. Dual Enrollment is off campus college credit that requires admittance into the college and registration for the course outside of Cambridge. Students and their families must manage this paperwork and requirements on their own. We will not be offering Dual Enrollment classes on campus due to space limitations. I caution students to take Dual Enrollment and AP classes that they find interesting and compelling. I also urge students to consider whether their college will accept AP credit for the class. Many juniors start to overload themselves with AP and honors courses at this level. They do it to boost their numbers of AP and honors classes for their transcript, knowing they will be applying to colleges as seniors. However, this is the year that many students truly start to feel the pressure. I highly advise students and their families to consider balance. 12th Sample Schedule:

Things to consider for 12th grade schedule: Honors versus AP versus Dual Enrollment versus on-level class options. Again, Dual Enrollment requires college admittance, state paperwork to pay for the course, and registration with the college (Cambridge does not enroll students into college courses). We will not be offering Dual Enrollment classes on campus due to space limitations. Seniors are required to take a full load of six courses, even if they do not need all of the courses to fulfill graduation requirements. Seniors are not given the option to drop AP courses mid-year. Based on my experience with my own children as well as thousands of seniors over the course of my career, remember that you may be stressed to get all your credits completed and pass or you may experience a decline in motivation as you look forward to your future. All college admittance is based on your final transcript (sent to colleges in June/July), so choose courses that you are interested in and can hold your focus throughout the entire year. Every grade counts. Now that you have an idea of classes required by year, other things to consider: Am I interested in a club? Sport? Performing Arts? Do I volunteer? Part of a service organization? Time to think about your life outside of school and the commitments those activities bring. Remember that these outside interests and activities provide your life balance and engage learning and skill building that no classroom can teach. It is important to get involved in school and community outside of your classes. So, think about each of these activities and how much time they involve for you. Also consider why you are doing them – does this make you happy? Fulfilled? Does this activity provide insight into a future career? Or is this activity to boost my resume (which is a valid reason to do something, just make sure you balance it with something that brings you joy as well)? Sample – the overall picture:

French 2H 5 hours Need to take a World Language for college and for grad requirements. Want to go to Paris one day!!! Loved French 1, so keeping with it!

Yoga 2 hours Go to classes twice a week – this is time for me to take care of myself and find focus.

Recommendation Guidelines for 2021-2022

Teachers of pre-requisite core courses (English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Languages) are

responsible for making appropriate course recommendations for the next school year. Teachers will complete this

process on-line through Infinite Campus. These recommendations will generate the First Course Verification Form that

will be distributed to students in February. Students will then have an opportunity to review their teachers’

recommendations and make any necessary changes. Students will receive two additional Course Verification Forms

before the end of this school year, allowing them to update their course requests, if necessary, before the final deadline

of April 16, 2021.

Students are encouraged to pursue a challenging course of study; however, they should keep in mind that the demands

of on-level, honors-level and Advanced Placement (AP) courses vary. Students should consider their entire course load

and aim for a balanced schedule by taking into account teacher recommendations, District placement guidelines, course

load, extra-curricular commitments, interest level, after-school jobs, future goals, and other factors when signing up for

honors-level and AP courses. Teachers, parents, and students are encouraged to use the following chart to provide

additional guidance in making course selections. Students who receive two or more ratings of 1 or 2 are not strong

candidates for honors or AP classes.

No student who meets the criteria outlined in the District placement guidelines should be prevented from taking a course,

this is only one criterion used to determine appropriate placement. District placement guidelines are posted on the

school website, www.cambridgehs.org > Academics > Course Registration Resources.

In determining placement for students who fall short of the criteria, overall aptitude demonstrated by evidence from past

performance and teacher feedback should be considered, bearing in mind what is in the best interests of the student.

After considering teacher recommendations and the guidance charts, parents may sign a waiver for placement in an

accelerated, honors, or Advanced Placement course if a student does not meet the District placement guidelines. The

waiver form is posted on the school website, www.cambridgehs.org > Academics > Course Registration Resources.

CAMBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL COURSE OFFERINGS

When using this catalog, please remember the following:

• Course # indicates the computer number of the course.

• Term indicates the length of the course. Courses with a term of S meet for one semester; those designated

with Y meet for the entire year.

• CHS Indicators of Success designate certain courses that must be completed prior to the start of the course,

that certain grades must be achieved in previous courses, that the course is restricted to certain grade levels,

and/or that the student must make application to register for the course. *The Fulton County Course Placement

Guidelines is also available as additional reference.

• Advanced Placement (AP) is a program of college-level courses which gives high school students the

opportunity to receive advanced placement and/or credit in college through successful completion of an exit

examination.

• AP/Honors/Advanced class waivers will be required to override teacher recommendations in instances when a

student has not met the FCS High School Placement guidelines requirements.

• Work-Based Learning (WBL) is for students who are 16 years of age or older in 11th or 12th grade. Please

reach out to Ms. Yarrington at [email protected] for more information.

• Virtual Classes are courses students take online; most commonly through Fulton Virtual School (FVS) or

Georgia Virtual School (GAVS). Please check for the specific registration window (typically opens in March)

posted on their website. You must register for BOTH fall and spring semester. Interested students are

responsible for registering for each class on the appropriate website. CHS students can take no more than 2

online classes each semester.

• FCBOE Policy Section I - Instructional Program, Title: Grading & Reporting #IHA: Students are expected to

complete courses for which they are enrolled. If changes are necessary, they should be requested in writing by

the parent/guardian within the first ten (10) school days of the course. All course changes must meet the

following criteria: 1) an FTE-eligible course is available for the student space is available in an already

scheduled course the student’s graduation requirements can be met within four years be approved by the

teacher and guidance counselor. 2) Any parent not satisfied with the decision of the teacher and guidance

counselor regarding course changes may contact the principal or his/her designee. 3) Students may be allowed

to transfer out of a course outside the 10-day period in the event of an exceptional hardship or in response to a

teacher recommendation. Failure in the course alone should not be considered an exceptional hardship.

Factors which interfere with a student’s mastery of the content such as a catastrophic event or extended illness

would be examples of an exceptional hardship Requests for exceptional hardships should be made in writing

by the parent to the principal.

• Course Sequence-at-a-Glance can be used as a reference to learn the typical matriculation of courses in each

department/pathway.

• Student schedules are subject to change to meet the federal and state guidelines (i.e., class sizes). Students

should regularly check their latest schedule updates in Infinite Campus especially at the beginning of each

semester.

Latin V Honors offers advanced Latin students the opportunity to read primary Latin texts in a variety of genres. Having mastered the structural elements of the Latin language and having shown proficiency in reading comprehension of advanced Latin texts, students will reap the fruits of their hard work as they enjoy reading authors of their own choosing. Students may read from Ovid, Cicero, Catullus, Horace, Vergil, Caesar, Plautus, Martial, Cato, Pliny, Tacitus, Suetonius, Livy, Quintilian, Nepos, Seneca, Propertius, et al. In addition to these authors, students may read from Biblia Sacra Vulgata; spend a little time in Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis, Hobbitus Ille, Winnie Ille Pu, Cattus Petasatus; and even create their own Latin version of English works. The sky really is the limit for students in this course. Upon completion, students will be well prepared for any advanced Latin course at the undergraduate level.

TALENTED AND GIFTED

High school TAG students have a variety of options in receiving gifted services. The options are: Seminars, Independent Projects, Directed Studies, Career Internships (11th and 12th graders only), Advanced Placement (AP) Classes and College Classes.

1) Seminars: Teacher-designed courses are offered based on student interest and meet weekly during a specific day and time. The objectives and activities of each seminar are clearly defined in a contract that the student signs at the beginning of the seminar. The student transcript reflects credit/non-credit.

• Each seminar is guided by a contract developed by a TAG teacher and approved by local school administration and the TAG office.

• The seminar contract includes documentation of a minimum of 14 contact hours and a final individual project requiring some work outside of the seminar

Ceramics 1 is an introductory course in ceramics covering the three basic methods of hand building. Students will produce ceramic artwork using pinch, slab, and coil techniques. Students will learn the basic vocabulary of ceramics as well methods of surface treatment, firing, and other related aspects. Ceramic history, aesthetics, and art criticism will be incorporated throughout the course. Ceramics 2 provides in-depth work with clay beyond that of Ceramics 1. Students will further technical ability in hand building, surface decoration, and/or wheel-thrown ceramics. Glaze chemistry will be addressed with an emphasis on how a glaze works and how to alter results. Alternative firing techniques will introduce students to various surface effects and firing atmospheres. Graphic Design 1 introduces graphic design as seen in posters, advertisements, logos, illustrations, signs, and package or product designs. Investigates the historical development of graphics design and its function in contemporary society. Stresses using the computer as a major design tool; explores career opportunities. Graphic Design 2 expands on students’ software knowledge and design principles from Graphic Design 1 to learn additional Creative Suite Software and apply this knowledge into real-world based projects. Photography 1 is an introduction to black and white photography and darkroom processing. This course is an analytical examination of crime detection and solution, including such topics as crime scene procedures, physical evidence, interviews, field notes and reporting, follow-up investigation, interrogation, and rules of evidence. Specific detail is given to investigations involving homicide, sex-related offenses, and crimes against children, robbery, larceny, vehicle thefts, computer crime, environmental crime, arson, and drug abuse. Additionally, many areas of specialized crimes will be discussed and reviewed. This course will involve projects, where groups will work to develop and investigate various crime scenarios. There is an in-depth analysis of investigation methodologies addressing inductive and deductive reasoning to assess the decision-making process to
