KICK START TO ART: Levels 1 – 4 Visual Arts Presented by Michele Jones Saturday February 14, 2009 10am – 12.30pmWith the introduction of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards, there have been some major changes to the way in which we develop, plan, implement and deliver visual arts curriculum to our students. In this workshop, beginning art teachers in particular, will experience a valuable insight into:-• A further understanding of the philosophy behind VELS • Implementing a VELS Visual Arts planner to document / audit units• Planning VELS enquiry units of work related to classroom programs • Implementing Visual Arts portfolios for assessment / record keeping• Collating and evaluating records for meaningful report writing • Excellent time management ideas that engage challenging students• Effective whole-school displays for limited spaces and tired corridors • What are Visual Diaries and how to implement them with ease! • Raising the profi le of Visual Arts within your school without too much stress!

3. THE GIFT OF GIVING: Levels P- 6 Visual ArtsPresented by Michele Jones Saturday, March 28, 2009 10am – 12.30pmWhat better way to inspire your students and give them a purpose for creating brilliant artwork, than designing and making their own gifts and cards for this special occasion? Participants in this workshop will be shown a wide range of activities including glass painting, calico bags, decoupage boxes, framed prints and paintings on canvas, to create presents and cards that will be cherished for years to come. Even if you only undertake this task with one year level, the results will be overwhelming.You can do it!

4. THE CYCLE OF LIFE: Levels 1 – 2 Visual ArtsPresented by Michele Jones Saturday May 2, 2009 10am – 12.30pm“Life Cycles” is still a very popular VELS inquiry unit undertaken by junior classes in many schools. In this workshop, participants will experiment with some new and exciting materials to create a range of stunning insects, caterpillars and mini beasts, which will defi nitely enhance this class-room unit. Materials such as stockings, nylon fi lling, chenille stems, sequins, felts, wire, joggle eyes, new polystyrene shapes and beads will be used to produce wild and fabulous bugs that the students will be thrilled to own. A fabulous way to incorporate threads and textiles, collage and construction in one activity, as well as using up all those scraps and bits and pieces you never know what to do with! Come along and see some new products that have just arrived!

5. SPACED OUT! Levels 4 Visual ArtsPresented by Michele Jones Saturday May 23, 2009 10am – 12.30pmWhat a sensational unit to implement in your art room, especially if you need to include more modelling activities into your program. In this workshop, participants will not only be exposed to a range of exciting materials, but also be shown how to use them in new and innovative ways! In order to engage the senior students, it is important to constantly introduce them to different media and allow them to experiment with their properties. This session will include working with embossing foil and wire-form, instant paper mache, superlite, and plasticine to create aliens, extra-terrestrial crafts, space scenes and amazing planets from a ‘galaxy far away”! Come and have a look at some new diorama packs that have just arrived too! Really amazing!

2. BRING ME? Levels P- 6 Visual ArtsPresented by Michele Jones Saturday, February 28, 2009 10am – 12.30pmLooking for some brilliant ideas to enhance a VELS based inquiry unit about "Being Me" to start your year off with a bang? Wanting to move away from the traditional posters and collages and incorporate some new art resources? Then this workshop might be just what you need! Participants in this workshop will be given the opportunity to explore some simple yet stunning ideas for decorating those bland classroom walls and corridors, while focussing on individual student interests and information! Using card templates, body forms, body shapes and a wide range of mixed media materials for embellishment, these activities can be used across all levels and will create great interest and enjoyment amongst your students. Come along and join in!

6. BOOK WEEK! Levels 1 – 4 Visual ArtsPresented by Michele Jones Saturday, June 13, 2009 10am – 12.30pmIdeas spring from not only Book Week theme, but also from the short listed books and their illustrations. Activities undertaken can be linked to literature and integrated units that arise throughout the year.

7. JUST FACE IT! Levels 2 – 4 Visual ArtsPresented by Michele Jones Saturday, July 25, 2009 10am – 12.30pmCombining a few activities from a similar workshop a few years ago, this session will include a huge range of activities centred on the drawing, modelling, decorating, stitching and embellishing of faces from around the world! Fantastic as a stand alone unit of study or brilliant if related to multicultural units! Participants will be allowed to explore some easy ways of using photocopies, modelling materials, pre-bought masks and a limitless selection of multimedia materials to enhance and create faces that will make sensational displays along corridors and in classrooms. Students will gain the confi dence to experiment with these activities without fear of failure, as they have all been designed for a 100% success rate. Come and join in all the fun!!

8. ON A PLATE! Levels 1 – 3 Visual ArtsPresented by Michele Jones Saturday, September 5, 2009 10am – 12.30pmDid you know that there are some fabulous art activities that you can do with the humble paper plate? They are cheap, recyclable, easy to deco-rate, versatile and can be incorporated into several VELS inquiry units such as Celebrations, Multiculturalism, Australian Animals, Toys, Recycling and of course a plethora of fun activities and presents! Aimed at Years P – 3, this workshop will incorporate a wide range of tasks that will offer your students a 100% success, while still creating some challenges along the way! A fabulous unit to undertake at this time of the year without stretching the budget too far and the students will be able to replicate and build on these activities at home as well! Who would have thought such a simple product could be so inspiring?

INSTRUCTIONS:1. Cut cardboard paper to a long strip, approx. 45cm x 6cm.2. Lie the strip flat and draw colourful patterns onto it.3. Curl the strip into a circle and fix the ends together with a stapler.4. Stick metallic tinsel lengths to both sides of the ends of the circle with glue.5. Hang a coloured bell with metallic thread, fix the other end of the thread to the circle with stapler. Tip: The length of the thread should be ad-justed so that the bell is hung in the center of the circle.6. Staple ribbon as a hanger to the top of the cardboard ring to create a hanger.

INSTRUCTIONS:1. Paint a length of the paper coated wire with black acrylic paint.2. When dry, fold into the shape of a bauble. Twist at the top, leaving approximately 3cm at each end to fold into a loop to make a “bow” at the top.You can fold the wire around a small jar or box to help you get an even shape. Press flat.3. Cut a piece of bubble wrap a little bigger than the wire shape, then glue the shape on with PVA. Press on firmly, or weigh it down for a few minutes.4. When dry, dab Kindy Glitz on the Bubbles to give the jewelled effect.5. Allow the Kindy Glitz to dry, then trim off excess bubble wrap.

INSTRUCTIONS:1. Paint 2 pieces of the paper covered wire black.2. When dry fold 1 piece in half and twist to form the head and outline of the body/clothing.3. Twist the second piece of the wire around the ‘neck” to form the wings. They don’t need to join to the body. (See Illustration).4. Press as flat as you can and place on a piece of tissue.5. Add a little water to some PVA and gently brush onto the tissue under and over the wire using a soft brush.6. Press the second tissue square over the top, and press down gently. You can put a weight on it to help it dry flat, then trim off the excess tissue, shaping the rest of the body as you go.7. When dry, water down some paint. You can add a little PVA, and paint your angel.

To cover the entire poly ball with glitter, mix PVA into the acrylic paint and brush onto the ball, then sprinkle with glitter while still wet.ORFor a Robin Breast effect, paint the poly ball with two colours and allow to dry. INSTRUCTIONS:1. Photocopy the template, then use it to cut out the kangaroo shapes out of the white card.2. Select complementary colours, ie browns, ochres, oranges, yellows and pinks from the oil pastels to colour the kangaroo shape with a solid amount of colour so that there is no white showing through.*Tip: You can cut the oil pastels into two so that there is more to share around.3. Mix approximately 2 drops of detergent per 100ml of thick black acrylic paint and brush over the pastels. *Tip: An uneven coating of paint will give a more distressed look.4. When the paint is thoroughly dry, use a craft knife or skewer to scratch various widths of lines in different directions as well as spots & circles to create interesting patterns.5. To finish, spray with fixative or hairspray to prevent any flaking or smudging.
