Here we are at the beginning of the second quarter of the new school year and I think that we can all agree that along with it have come many changes. The most notable of which is the progress made on the new building !or Joy Center". Construction on the Joy Center has come a long way since its initial groundbreaking late last school year. As of November 2012 the concrete foundation, steel frame, and roof have all been successfully completed. We are all aware that the Joy Center will be finished sometime next year, but what specific purposes will it serve? This is the question that I have put to various members of the Calvary Academy/Lighthouse staff.

To answer this question, we must first examine the reasons for the Joy Center’s existence. The primary purpose of its construction is to eliminate the need for the trailers and unify the campus by integrating the classes held there in into one cohesive building. This will be accomplished through the use of two bridges that will connect

the Joy Center to both the upper and lower levels of the current building. In addition to the classes currently held in the trailers, the Joy Center will also be home to many new classes held in new classrooms such as a new science lab and even a theater. Lastly, the Joy Center has played a vital part in the accreditation process that our school has recently undergone. Mrs. Ellen Tyler, Business Administrator of Calvary Academy, goes on to state that the

new building has helped Calvary Academy to meet certain requirements imposed by the accreditation board. Pastor Wes Lindquist, Senior Pastor of Calvary Lighthouse, believes that

the new building will allow Calvary Academy to grow and prosper as the student population increases. “We are excited about what God is doing here at Calvary Academy and proud of the progress made thus far.”, says Pastor Wes.

As a senior here at Calvary Academy, I am optimistic about the future of the Joy Center. While I will not personally be here at the time of its completion, I trust that it will impact the lives of many future generations of Calvary Academy students. I believe that this building will fulfill Calvary’s vision of bringing the joy of Christ to every child that enters its doors.

With a new school year, we are always seeing new faces around campus, both students and teachers. This month’s Teacher Feature is about Dr. Thomas E. Hoffman who is a brand new addition to the Calvary Academy faculty/staff this year. Dr. Hoffman was the principal and an administrator of Grace and Peace Academy for a number of years, and remains a part of the church’s pastoral staff helping with marriage counseling as well as other forms of counseling.

Dr. Hoffman has his Associate’s Degree in Applied Science from Ocean County College, a Bachelor’s Degree

in Natural Science and Math, along with his Master’s Degree in Counseling and Doctorate’s Degree in Educational Leadership, both from Liberty University. Dr. Hoffman is now a teacher because “God gave me an amazing gift concerning problem solving and I want to influence other students so they can discover and develop their God-given gifts.”

Dr. Hoffman has many patents for inventions of his and has been a consultant for many companies solving both chemical and engineering problems. Along with his love for

learning and teaching, Dr. Hoffman loves God, his wife, and his three children.

Although he has suffered great loss in his life, he has continued pursuing after Christ with everything he has. Dr. Hoffman has been blessed to have worked in some areas that he dreamed of as a child, holding a high number of patents and trade secrets. He holds so many he “cannot remember how many, maybe twenty-eight to twenty-nine” – Dr. Hoffman.

In Luke 10:30-37, Jesus tells a parable of a good Samaritan. In this story, a man is beaten and left on the side of the road. After both a priest and a Levite pass him by, a man from an opposing culture that is passing by sees the gentleman and decides to tend to his wounds. This parable served as a spark of inspiration for Billy Graham’s son, Franklin, to begin a group known today as “Samaritan Purse.” If you are still unfamiliar with the name, perhaps you recognize their most popular service, “Operation Christmas Child.”

Operation Christmas Child, right around christmas time, encourages people all over the world to participate in filling shoe boxes with all kinds of toys and goods for children all around the world. They give us the opportunity to show our appreciation for all that God has given us and, in return, bless the life of someone else who is not as

fortunate. The journey of a shoe box is incredible.

The countries receiving these boxes are home to many people that have great needs. The destinations include: Haiti, Dominican Republic, Kenya, Liberia, Romania and many more.

The thought of filling a shoe box with various toys may seem meaningless, unimportant, and insignificant, but I assure you that it truly makes a difference. These kids that find themselves in less fortunate situations are often overwhelmed with joy as they receive the boxes put together by donors.

If you look below, there is a list of many items that you can place in your Operation Christmas Child box. I feel that one of the most important items that you can put in the box is a personal note which allows you to briefly express who you are and little bit about yourself.

Who knows, you might even get a letter back from the person who received the shoe box! The potential impact that this opportunity allows, will certainly make a difference in your life.

As Deuteronomy 16:17 proclaims, “Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you.” Many of us are quite blessed in that we are able to live comfortably and have basic necessities and a place to live. Since our circumstances are generally better than the average person from a third world country, why wouldn’t we give? The intent of God’s blessing and love is not to be kept by an individual, but to be shared everywhere travel. I would encourage to take advantage of this awesome chance to bless the life of someone you don’t even know.

You have probably heard of the Syrian Civil War on the news. Like other conflicts in the Middle East, because of its intricacy, the Syrian Civil War can be difficult to understand. This article provides a brief overview of the conflict.

Since March 2011, the Syrian Civil War has been a growing concern. Those revolting against the current government intend to oust President Bashar al-Assad and end the rule of the Ba’th party, an Arab socialist group.

The conflict began as nonviolent protests calling for civil and political rights. However, as the size of the protests grew, the conflict escalated. On March 16, a group of 1500 men began protesting in Damascus, and on March 18, the protest spread to other cities including Banias, al-Hasakah, Daraa, Deir az-Zor, and Hama. In order to disperse the protests, the police used tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition, killing at least six people and injuring others.

The government’s response to the protests shifted from a mix of force and concessions to violent repression. On April 25, the Syrian Army besieged Daraa,

which had been the crux of Syrian protests. They fired on demonstrators and methodically searched houses for protestors. Security forces shut off water, power lines, and telephone lines and confiscated food. The government continued to besiege and blockade cities such as Damascus, Baniyas, Homs, Talkalakh, and Latakia.

In response to government brutality, opposition groups began to organize. On July 29, the formation of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) was announced. The FSA was formed by a group of Syrian deserters and is led by Colonel Riad al-Assad. It has acted as a loose organization of opposition forces which have implemented guerilla tactics to counter security forces within cities.

The current prognosis of the Syrian Civil War is not a good one. The Syrian government continues to commit terrible atrocities against its people. Secretary-General Ban said, “Each day seems to bring new additions to the grim catalogue of atrocities: assaults against civilians; brutal human rights violations; mass arrests; and execution-style killings of whole families.” Despite international

efforts to support opposition groups by providing weapons, the conflict only seems to be escalating. In addition, due to the close proximity of the conflict to Israeli borders, the Syrian Civil War threatens international conflict.

Syrian possession of chemical weapons adds a new dimension to the conflict. Damascus is thought to have one of the largest stockpiles of chemical weapons in the Middle East, including sarin nerve agent, mustard gas, and cyanide. President Obama calls deployment of such weapons as a “red line” for the United States. Thus, Syrian use of chemical weapons would implicate the United States’ military in the Syrian Civil war. In spite of the great destruction the war has already caused, Syria’s possession of chemical weapons has the potential to widen the conflict.

Somewhere between 28,000 and 37,725 people have been killed during the course of the Syrian Civil War. Over 200,000 refugees have fled Syria to escape the violence. With the number of casualties growing daily, it is important to keep the people of Syria in prayer.

Fashion Week is a highly-anticipated event that gives fashion lovers a sneak peek of what to expect this upcoming season. The most conspicuous shows are held in London England, Paris, Milan, and New York City. Since 2010, New York’s fashion week has been arranged in the Lincoln Center. During this week, the 4th annual FNO (Fashion’s Night Out! took place in over 500 cities this year. Thursday, September 13th, FNO invaded New York City with its outrageously reduced prices, street performances, and over 700 stores open after hours. The catwalk wowed the audience with new solitary designs. Many famous designers displayed a sense of “ready-to-wear” fashion, as seen in the title of each spring collection. Between the vibrant colors and 70’s themed pieces, this year’s collection is sure to set the “OMG-generation” in a rush to buy the latest trends.

Quality clothing such as J. Crew released a bright and cheerful feel in their new line. “Its’ inspiration came from old Time Life magazines”, says Tom Mora, the head of women’s design. Style icon, Jenna Lyons, presented an exceptional show due to the pencil skirts, denim button-ups, and embroidered satin pants. Modesty is a definite for this season!

The famous Alexander McQueen released a line that could easily fall under the category of luxurious

menswear, especially for the spring 2013 assortment. Clean cut and metallic suits provide a classic look for business wear. During this year’s Fashion Night Out, there was a chance to purchase the limited-edition Alexander McQueen snakeskin skull bracelets and raffle

drawings to win one of the designer’s Union Jack clutches. McQueen also introduced his new wrap scarf bracelet.

The store in NYC hosted a DJ and drinks for people with exclusive invitations and those stopping by for after hour shopping.

Betsey Johnson revived herself and her clothing line with a big comeback full of glitter and an energizing set of

designs. Betsey brings a mixture of disco with a touch of rock chic. Pin-up eye makeup to bright neon colors and big crimped hair caught the eye of the audience. For a 70-year-old designer, Johnson outdid herself with upbeat fashion as well as an upbeat show.

The sea of designers that presented many diverse sets of clothing lines sum up the amount of creativity for this upcoming season. The new idea of bringing back “modesty” in women’s clothing shows a sign of maturity and growth within each company. Overall, the 2012 Fashion Week for the Spring 2013 collection was successful.

A song begins with an intro featuring electric guitar and electronic echos over a steady kick drum beat and ominous synth pad. By deductive reasoning, your odds are that you are likely hearing either a 1983 hit by rock band, U2, or you are hearing the latest and greatest in modern worship music. While there is nothing wrong with this sound and genre, it is interesting to point out that sometimes praise and worship music feels a bit “outdated” despite how recent their releases are. Some will even go so far as to say that the sound of modern worship music is about 20 years behind what is currently popular.

Thus is not the case with worship group, Gungor. Led by namesake, Michael Gungor, this group defines themselves by the way they push boundaries and challenge the norm in spiritual music. By their instrumental lineup alone, you can see that this group is far from conventional. While their lineup is constantly changing between tours, their core and most familiar members are as follows; Michael Gungor- Guitar/Strings, Lisa Gungor (Michael’s wife!- Glockenspiel/Xylophone/Assorted, and Kevin Olusola (Also a member of the accapella group, “Pentatonix”)- Cello/Beatbox.

Though Michael Gungor has been performing and writing for over a decade, his greatest success has come from the releasing of Gungor’s albums, “Ghosts Upon the Earth” in 2011 and “Beautiful Things” in 2010. In fact, “Ghosts Upon the Earth” was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album. With the attention that Gungor is receiving, the sky is truly the limit for this avant-garde worship group.

Be sure to check out their new album, “A Creation Liturgy,” which was just released October 9th.

When the nation’s leaders decide that America needs to be a war-free country, focused only on keeping peace, the population is split into five factions, each with their own opinions on what they believed caused war—fear, ignorance, selfishness, dishonesty, and fighting. Thus, the five factions—Dauntless, Erudite, Abnegation, Candor, and Amity— were formed. The story follows Beatrice, a sixteen-year-old girl originally an Abnegation, through her hard and painful struggle to become Dauntless. But, as always, even a nation based on peace cannot go on forever without a war…

Dystopian novels are all the rage nowadays—hello, Hunger Games—and it seems as though authors are writing them faster than you can say “I volunteer as tribute!” While Divergent

has all the usual qualities of a dystopian novel—alternative future, oppressive government, and war—it stood out among the carbon copied Hunger Games wannabes. The book features dynamic main characters with unique personalities and morals, which are clearly displayed during intense conflicts.

True to dystopian form, Divergent brings up severe moral and ethical issues. War and peace are main themes in the book, which can be too intense for younger readers. Within the alternative future of Divergent the citizens of America participate in corrupt practices, as dictated by the government. Some of the characters’ decisions when faced with these issues go against Christian morals. There is a strong emphasis on bravery and the different forms that it

takes. Because of this, fighting and violence are emphasized in this book. There is also a romance element in the novel, and while it is strictly PG, it may still concern some parents.

The conflicts the characters face reflect the internal struggles that we all face—right vs. wrong, good vs. evil, and how much a person is willing to sacrifice for the ones they love. These struggles magnify the choices we as Christians face in our lives, and they show the consequences for making the wrong decisions. Veronica Roth creates a masterpiece with her novel Divergent that reflects the personal, social, and political issues that we as Americans—and Christians—face daily.
