The Newsletter of Calvary United Methodist Church
JANUARY 2015
This is a publication of Calvary United Methodist Church , 11 North Richland Avenue ,
York, PA 17404. It is published for the members and friends of Calvary Church.
CLOSET OF WARMTH
Calvary is partnering with St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church next door to
reach out and help members and the local community by collecting
warm winter wear items through the end of Febru-
ary. We are using the closet at the back of the
apostles room to store items – please
hang coats and put hats, gloves, mit-
tens, socks, and scarves in the tote in
the closet.
VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH
DISTRIBUTION OF ITEMS
Fridays from 9:00 - 11:30 AM
Volunteers stay in the office and answer phone calls that will indicate
a person is being sent from St. Matthews to Calvary for a coat,
gloves, and other items. You then wait for the person at the doors
near the Apostles Room entrance and take the person to the closet in
the Apostles Room. Keep in mind that Preschool is in session at this
time, and we must be vigilant in watching, at all times, anyone who
enters the church. Please see the sign-up sheet at the Information
Center.
THE GENERATIONS SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS
WILL BE REGENERATING!
If you are looking for a 9:00 AM Sunday School Class with some lively
conversation on the teachings from the Bible, this is the class for you.
A firm date for the first class will be announced.
If you have questions, please see Sue Husson or Tom Lehman.
Rev. Dr. B. Michael Brossman
Isaiah 43:19
“I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”
This is the time when we get that new calendar that is completely empty and it looks like we
have all the time in the world. We have no responsibilities, and are totally available to everyone.
We are not busy at all.
Of course we then begin to fill that calendar with all of the stuff that is expected of us. Ca-
reer, family, volunteer efforts, and “play” time all begin to take away that freedom and availability.
We begin to run out of time for the things that we thought might be nice to pursue.
One approach to the calendar is to first put in the things that represent new opportunities and
possibilities. Once a week put in something that you have never done or had always wanted to do.
Write in time with special friends and family. Write in personal times for refreshment and reflec-
tion. Set these appointments first and work other responsibilities around them. This way we can be
our best and offer our best to the rest of the items that fill our calendar.
What new thing is God about to do in you? Make sure there is room for that new thing to
occur.
Happy New Year!!
Celebrating new opportunities and possibilities,
Pastor Mike, Pam, Brennan, Alyssa, and Lyndsay

NEED A PEACEFUL PLACE TO PRAY?
Calvary’s Sanctuary provides a quiet, peaceful place to come and focus upon God. You are wel-
come to come through the office door during office hours or any time the church is open for activi-
ties and meetings. Scheduled office hours are 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Tuesdays and Wednes-
days and 1:00 to 5:00 PM on Thursdays. During activities and meetings, the Sanctuary is usually
available.

GIANT AND WEIS GIFT CARDS
Grocery Cards Make Great Gifts!
The church receives 5% of the face value of grocery cards, and you get the full face value to
spend for groceries and gasoline. Calvary uses the profits to purchase Bibles to give away during
events such as National Night Out and the Halloween Parade. This is such as easy way to help
fund this outreach project. Even if you don’t spend a lot at the grocery store, your 5% plus every-
one else’s 5% adds up and can be quite a significant amount of money.
Please see Karen Hoover on Sundays to buy cards or call her at 792-2466. Most of us buy gro-
ceries and gas, so why not use gift cards purchased from Calvary Church?
