have a small group already, email me one thing you love about your small group. ([email protected]) No small group yet? Fear not! There are a variety of groups getting underway. Some will meet at church, some in people's homes. There are women's group and some for men. Some gather for events, fellowship and prayer (like SALT). Other's gather around a book study and video teaching. We even have a Sunday afternoon one (PEPPER) that meets at church with childcare. The goal: That we all find a way to be connected. So, what do you think? Are you interested? (Even Jesus and the disciples were in a small group, after all.) Over the next few months Pastor Ken and the Christian Education Committee will be working to put together some groups that will start in the fall. Can't wait that long? There are a few groups you can try out during the summer!! The Men's Group meets the 3rd Thursday of every month, July 27 and August 24, at 6 p.m. And, PEPPER meets every other Sunday (July 2, 16 and 30; 4:00-5:30 p.m.). Not sure what group might be a good fit for you? Contact [email protected] and we'll review the options. Watch for the August and September Crossroads as new groups are announced. We can't wait to see what God will continue to do as we meet together! In Service Together, Pastor Dawn

NALC launches Holy Families! Initiative The North American Lutheran Church (NALC) has launched its Holy Families! initiative. Holy Families! offers discipleship resources for families to use at home. Holy Families! Is a part of the NALC’s observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation—noting the significant contribution of Martin Luther and the Reformation to nurturing faith in the Christian home. The Thrivent Foundation provided a generous grant to make Holy Families! possible. Holy Families! Website The centerpiece of the Holy Families! Initiative is the website—www.holyfamilytime.com—featuring a host of resources to aid in promoting discipleship in the home. Included are online materials, downloadable PDF documents, prayers, educational videos, as well as a daily devotional resource for use by parents and children. The hope is that this website will serve as a gift to enrich the lives of families throughout the world. Feel free to bookmark the site or mark it as a “favorite” so you can return to it easily!

For the convenience of those using hand-held devices, you can also access the Holy Family Time website through a link on the Sola App. To download the free Sola App to your phone or tablet: Search for “Sola App” in Google Play or in the iTunes App Store. The Sola App has many other features, including Scripture and the Small Catechism. Holy Family Time Daily Devotional Accessible through computer, phone, and tablet, the “Holy Family Time” daily devotional is freely avail- able to the public. The Holy Family Time devotional was written with these key emphases in mind:

1.Solid Biblical Content 2.Child-Friendly and Family-Friendly Readings 3.Lutheran Theological Perspective 4.Questions Asked by the Children 5.Employing Luther’s Three-fold Approach to Scripture: Prayer, Study, and Struggle To help children develop a sense of consistency in repetition, the same four-part format is used for each day’s devotional: Pray: Call upon God to open our hearts and to hear his Word.

Listen: Listen carefully to the Word, in verse, narrative, rhyme, and catechism. Engage: Let God’s Word work on us through struggle with Scripture, with parents responding to their children’s questions of faith. Affirm: Pray that God would put his Word into action in our daily life and bless each other in faith.

As an acronym, these four steps spell out the world P.L.E.A. As the Bible promises: “the Lord has heard my plea; the Lord accepts my prayer.” (Psalm 6:9) Video Study for Christian Parents “Living as Holy Families” is an online video study by Pastor Marcus Carlson in the form of six videos and downloadable study and leader’s guides. These resources were written to equip parents to be the first teachers of the Christian faith in their homes, and are freely accessible on the holyfamlytime.com website.

MISSION SERVANT PROJECTS A SUCCESS!

Mission Servant Month was a resounding success with members of the congregation as well as friends participating in the activi-ties. A new goal this year was to have intergenerational events to encourage interaction among all of Calvary's members. Thank you to everyone involved in the June activities! Projects included rolled bandages, fleece blankets, school backpacks, prayer shawls, serving food, collecting food, sorting food, donations for a women’s shelter, card writing to the military servicemen and shut-ins, yardwork at Calvary and LSS, as well as donation of hun-dreds of dollars to support these projects. Thank you to all who participated and especially to our team captains: RoJean Holler, Ernie Kretschmann, Linda Berger, Marcella Nelson, Ray Ches-ner, Wayne Johnson, Judy DeBruine, Jane Krause, Jenni Rian, Judy Kestly, Mark Trudell, Marge Tyne, and Julie Matthes.

Opportunity #1 – “Stage Door Canteen” Monday, Aug. 14 9am–1 pm at Calvary

We’ll get together in Fellowship Hall at 9 am for a little fellowship time and then go into the church to watch “Stage Door Canteen”.

Summary: “Three soldiers meet three girls at the famous canteen before going overseas in this star-studded film. Featuring appearances by Katharine Hepburn, Helen Hayes, Edgar Bergen, & Harpo Marx. Also featuring the bands of Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Guy Lombardo, Xavier Cugat and Freddy Martin.” There are dozens of cameos by well-known stars of the ‘30’s and ‘40’s. See how many you can recall. And watch for a 23-year-old girl singer who wasn’t even on the list of credits. Her initials are P. L.

After the movie, we’ll head back into Fellowship Hall for a light salad lunch provided by . . . some of you, we hope! When you sign up on the list in the Narthex, please indicate if you’d be able to bring some type of

salad. We’ll provide beverages and dessert. This promises to bring back a lot of memories!

Opportunity #2 – A Tour of Ten Chimneys Tuesday, Aug. 22 9 am–3 pm on the Road

Since these great stage actors will be making cameo appearances in “Stage Door Canteen”, we thought it would be fun to tour the summer home of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne in Genesee Depot. We’ll meet at Calvary at 9 am, tour about 10:15, and stop for lunch after. There are 2 tour options, and each of us can decide which one we prefer. When you step into the house, you’ll feel like Alfred and Lynn have just run an errand and will be back at any moment. It’s a real treat! See details and signup on the glass doors of the Narthex.

Full Estate Tour - Cost $30 The Full Estate Tour provides the optimum Ten Chimneys experience. Guests should allow two (2) hours, including a shuttle ride to and from the estate.

Main House Tour - Cost $25 This tour is designed for those who may have difficulty traversing the full estate, and features the fourteen rooms in the Main House. Guests should allow ninety minutes, including a shuttle ride to and from the estate. There are three floors in the main house. There is a small elevator for those who find stairs difficult.

Sign up now for these great opportunities!

We learned so much in our study of the Armor of God last fall, we’re going to delve into another Priscilla Shirer study in September. This fall’s study is entitled “Discerning the Voice of God”. The original study was produced in 2006, but the exciting news is that Priscilla Shirer has updated the study with completely new DVD lessons! The new format will be available in mid-August -- just in time for our Bible study! “No blessing surpasses a relationship with God in which you know when He is specifically calling to you. The more intimate your relationship with Him, the clearer God’s voice becomes.” (from the study guide) There will again be three options for Bible study times: 2nd and 4th Monday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30 pm 2nd and 4th Tuesday mornings from 10:30 am – noon 2nd and 4th Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 – 2:30 pm We always meet in the media room (Room 110) with a brief worship moment, fellowship, viewing the DVD seg-ment, and discussion. This is exciting stuff! Mark your calendars for these sessions: Session 1 Mon., Sept. 11 and Tues., Sept. 12 Session 5 Mon., Nov. 13 and Tues., Nov. 14 Session 2 Mon., Sept. 25 and Tues., Sept. 26 Session 6 Mon., Nov., 27 and Tues., Nov. 28 Session 3 Mon., Oct. 9 and Tues., Oct. 10 Session 7 Mon., Dec. 11 and Tues., Dec. 12 Session 4 Mon., Oct. 23 and Tues., Oct. 24 A friend of Calvary is underwriting this study, so there will be no charge for materials.
