Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today, and you shall learn them and be careful to do them. Deuteronomy 5:1 (ESV) Discipleship, creation, and the Ten Commandments! These are a few of my favorite things. This winter we started a sermon series from the book of Genesis entitled, “In the Beginning.” It has been meaning-ful to learn that God is a God who wants to be known, but he also wants us to know who we are (his image bearers). Following our Genesis series, we will embark on a journey through the Ten Commandments. Through-out Lent, we will spend our Sundays looking at God’s “ten rules” for Godly living. Some are harder to follow and some easier. But all ten of them are a guide and a blessing to us. Also, another small fact, the Ten Commandments coincide with the Sermon on the Mount, our Lenten series this year. So, it will be fun to see how the two interact with one another. Finally, last fall we began the slow process of discipleship at the church. As I am writing this, I am drawing up plans for discipleship here at Calvary. Those who signed up will be contacted shortly, but anyone is still welcome to join. So this winter is full of purpose and content. I am always amazed (I probably shouldn’t be anymore) at how God works all things together in harmony and how things just line up. This winter has a great line up and I am excited to share it with you and your families. God bless you all. And as always, who loves you? God loves you, and I love you. And it’s a privilege to be your pastor.

Our speaker for 2020 SIDExSIDE is Steve Jensen. Pastor Steve serves as pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Congregation at Schwer in Milford IL. Steve and his wife Brandi met at AFLBS in 1998. 19 years of marriage and 9 kids later he has found that God's grace is something which should be held with two hands. He enjoys Ultimate Frisbee and video games. A good movie where all the family is gathered together is one of his favorite things. Originally from Colorado, Pastor Steve enjoys sharing God’s Word with teenagers and is looking forward to SIDExSIDE.
Patrick VandenBos will be our speaker for the 2020 Sno-Daze winter youth retreat. Patrick is a 3rd year semi-nary student at the AFLC seminary in Plymouth, MN. He and his wife, Anna, have 6 children: Caleb (12), Adelyn (10), Joshua (9), Evelyn (6), Isaac (3), and Axel (1). Patrick was formerly a High school and Middle school Math teacher, as well as a church youth leader. He has a passion for sharing the Word with youth and assuring them of their importance and purpose in the Kingdom of God. When he is not doing homework, he enjoys doing things with his family like playing Go Fish, cheering for the Atlanta Braves, and relaxing outdoors.

Ash Wednesday
Thanks for the cards, gifts and visits that kept me celebrating my 97th birthday for a week. It was awesome and I am so very grateful. Needless to say, I have a number of new books and I’ve already read three of them. Whether they make it to the church library or not, I am considering. By the way, I do put more books into the library than I have room to write about on this page, so you might like to take a look. If you need an explanation about the location of the various kinds of books, just grab me and I’ll be happy to explain.
“River’s Song,” by Melody Carlson, is fiction. Following her mother’s fu-neral, and on the verge of her own midlife crisis, widow Anna Larson returns to the home of her youth to sort out her parents’ belongings, as well as her
own turbulent life. For the first time since childhood, she embraces her native heritage, despite the scorn of her mother-in-law. By transforming her family home on the banks of Oregon’s Siuslaw River into The Inn at Shining Waters, Anna hopes to create a place of healing--a place where guests experi-ence peace, grace, and new beginnings -- starting with her own family. Another novel is “the dancing master,” by Julie Klassen. Set in 1815, London’s dancing master moves his mother and sister to remote Devonshire hoping to start over, then is stunned to learn the vil-lage matriarch has prohibited all dancing, for reasons buried deep in her past. Filled with mystery and romance, this story brings to life those who taught the essential social graces for ladies and gentlemen, hoping to make a “good match” in Regency England. “Rebel With A Cause,” is the autobiography of Franklin Graham, and subtitled ‘Finally comfortable being Graham.’ I had known that in his youth he had given Billy and Ruth some gray hair and Franklin admits it. His is the story of a young rebel making his own way and making a difference. Don’t miss it. C.S. Lewis: If you think of this world as a place intended simply for our happiness, you find it quite intolerable: think of it as a place of training and correction and it’s not so bad. Albert Schweitzer: The greatest thing is to give thanks for everything. He who has learned this knows what it means to live….He has penetrated the whole mystery of life: giving thanks for every-thing. Saint John of Avila: One act of thanksgiving, when things go wrong with us, is worth a thousand thanks when things are agreeable to our inclinations. Emerson: All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen. Jean Baptiste Massieu: Gratitude is the memory of the heart, but gratitude is not only the memories of our heart; gratitude is a memory of God’s heart and to thank is to remember God. Henry Ward Beecher: Pride slays thanksgiving….A proud man is seldom a grateful man, for he nev-er thinks he gets as much as he deserves. Mother Teresa: The work we do is only our love for Jesus in action. Ann Voskamp has written a lovely book entitled “one thousand gifts.” It is subtitled A Dare To Live Fully Right Where You Are and is a practical guide to living a life of joy in giving thanks for God’s every-day blessings. She writes: The only real prayers are ones mouthed with thankful lips….Prayer, to be prayer, to have any power to change anything must first speak thanks….Prayer without ceasing is only possible in a life of continual thanks. Feel thanks and it’s absolutely impossible to feel angry. We can only experience one emotion at a time. And we get to choose--which emotion do we want to feel? The secret in joy is to keep seeking God where we doubt He is. Bonnie G. Schluter in “Love Letters from God,” writes, “Meditate on your life right now. Is someone angry with you? Are you angry with someone? Can you trace back what caused the anger? It was words, wasn’t it? Someone said something and you responded -- and the cycle began. Words. Words have power! You make people happy or you make people sad by the words you speak to them. The person who can control his or her tongue proves that he has control over himself. Submit your tongue to the control of the Holy Spirit. Ferne Liebsch 2-2020

Missionary Focus for the Month:
Missionary Focus for February ~Michael Rokenbrodt ~
Michael Rokenbrodt has accepted a call to be an AFLC Missionary. He will be commissioned at the AFLC Annual Conference in June of 2018 but begins his service in Uganda January of 2018. Michael will be serving as a seasonal mis-sionary, meaning he will be on the AFLC mission field for only part of each year. From January to May, he will be teaching pastors and church leaders with our other Ugandan missionaries. During the remaining part of the year, he will be em-ployed at Luther Island Bible Camp and doing deputation. He has worked at this camp annually for 12 years and wishes to continue his involvement in their minis-try. Michael is a member of Zion Free Lutheran Church in Wadena, MN. Michael spent six years teaching English and theology full time while continuing camp ministry in the summers. August of 2015 marked for him the beginning of two Short Term Assistant terms through Journey Missions. He worked alongside Mi-cah Berger in northern Uganda and with the Ambassador Institute curriculum. It is Michael’s goal to resume what they had been accomplishing together during his time as an STA, except now as an AFLC Missionary. His gifts in writing, speaking, and drama are qualities that will amplify the efforts of AFLC Missions in Uganda. Birthday: Michael (August 9) Prayer Concerns: For provision of continued prayer and financial support, for language learning, for safety and health
