I am so amazed and thankful for how our Lord Jesus continues to be the chief Shepherd of our church for over 80 years now. We remain faithful to the original intent of preaching God’s Word and reaching around the world with missions because Christ is our leader.

This year we continued to build on that solid foundation of our original leaders. Because of the faithfulness of our congregation, we are able to provide an ongoing discipleship ministry, over 150 LifeGroups for everyone from children to seniors, and our interactive Core LifeLab experiences to help people Connect, Grow and Reach with their personal faith in Christ. Although our style or form of ministry is quite different from 1931, we are still deeply grounded in those original purposes with our present staff and ministries. One new and exciting ministry we added this year was our Alpha Course, which helped people with their new faith and some placed their faith in Christ for the first time. Look for the Alpha course in February 2012 and plan to invite a friend.

Also, we all should give thanks to our Lord for how He has provided through each of us for our Restoration Project. In the first phase this year, we were able to address some critical maintenance issues by repairing aging roofs and integrating energy efficient air conditioning units. While that is not always the exciting part of life changing ministry, it is vitally important to keep our facilities in proper shape so they “facilitate” true life changing ministry. We continue to plan for the repurposing of our facilities to allow us to more effectively care for our precious kids and their parents and strengthen our student ministries with their own “home” right here on our campus. It is crucial that our buildings support our ministry, rather than our ministry trying to fit in with our existing facilities. Our Restoration Project is making that possible and I thank all of you who have contributed so generously for the purpose as we seek to restore our lives, campus and community for Jesus Christ.

[ Our Purpose ]

In a big church like Calvary, it is all too easy to slip in and out of the service and never really experience church in the way that God designed His people to experience it—as a family! We are made to know and be known, to be present with others, to love one another and to help bear one another’s burdens. This can only happen when we engage in the life of our church family and get to know one another as we walk through life side-by-side. This is where LifeGroups come in.

As 2011 wrapped up, we had a total of 29 LifeGroups that meet in homes throughout the week, and 19 LifeGroups that meet on Sunday mornings. In addition to these groups, there are also many LifeGroups that meet in Men’s, Women’s, Children’s, Student’s and Hispanic Ministries. In total, we have almost 150 LifeGroups. Thanks to the hard work and care from each of our LifeGroup leaders, we have approximately 1,500 people who are connected in a LifeGroup at Calvary!

In the fall, we tried something new called “LifeGroup Preview Sessions.” For three weeks, we met here on campus and people could come and check out what LifeGroups are all about. We talked about how we are made to Connect in Community, to Grow in Community, and to Reach in Community. Over 40 people, many of them new to Calvary within the last year, came and checked out these nights. By the end of the three weeks, two new LifeGroups had formed! Two other new groups also started this fall. Praise the Lord for how He has been helping people get connected and growing in their faith through LifeGroups here at Calvary!

With our emphasis on Connect, Grow, and Reach here at Calvary, we have designed a series of 4-week interactive classes to help people learn to live out the Christian life and these purposes. The How to Connect LifeLab 101 is also the membership class, and in 2011 we had 109 new members join Calvary. In 2011, we had over 200 people participate in the three Core LifeLabs.

One of the highlights of the whole LifeLab series comes on the last day in the Reach LifeLab 301. The first three weeks are spent talking about our S.H.A.P.E. (Spiritual Gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences) and how God has uniquely equipped each person for ministry. On the fourth week, each participant has the chance to sit down with a staff member and talk through how he or she might want to serve. It is an incredible opportunity to see people discover the unique giftedness God has given them. As a result, many of the participants are eager to put their gifts, time, and abilities into action and get involved in serving God either here at Calvary, or out in the community. Through the Reach LifeLab, God continues to raise up new people who will carry out the work of the Kingdom. You can learn more and register for an upcoming LifeLab at calvarylife.org/lifelabs

[ The Alpha Course ]The Alpha Course is a 12-week experience where people who are seeking out the meaning of life can learn, talk and ask questions about how that meaning can be found in Jesus Christ. The nights start with a great dinner and conversation, a teaching segment through video and then discussion in small groups. One of the things that makes Alpha different is that anyone can ask any question or make any comment – no matter how negative it sounds, how complex it is or even how simple it might be. Last year we had 75 people attend and five people came to belief in Jesus Christ through the Alpha Course, but it affected everyone deeply. Check out these comments from last year’s Alpha attendees.

• I needed to learn more about Christianity. I felt unjudged. It was a good place to ask questions.• I liked that the speaker wasn’t always a Christian in his life.• I got busy and kind of fell away from God and lost my Christian friends. But now I want to break out of that and live for God. • I felt like I was going to church on Sunday not really understanding, maybe just going through the motions. Before I probably would have said I was a Christian but now I don’t think I was before. I am now. I am eager to learn and live the life God has intended for me. • I was uneasy about the Christian faith, didn’t know if I was right for it. I’m more open to learning now. • I am new to the faith. I felt lost. Now I am motivated to learn more.• My faith has always been strong, but my will to reconnect with God and my spiritual needs was very weak. I feel more deserving of God and a closer bond to him. My relationship with my husband has improved. • I understand the Christian faith more now but I still disagree. • I came full of questions. It helped me clear up some barriers to understanding Christian beliefs.• I’m still not a Christian but I’m closer to God. • It reaffirmed my faith. I loved seeing an Alpha helper holding someone else’s baby the whole time. I thought it blessed that family. I know it would bless me. • I have been having a lot of questions about life and this course really came at a good time. I had a lot of questions answered. • Before I was unsure. Now I’m a lot better than before. • I am a very confused individual in search of answers. I have come to question my faith. I was skeptical even. I was Catholic by faith before. Now, I’m a believer. Still with questions but it’s ok. It’s ok to have questions.

The next Alpha Course begins with an Introductory Session on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 6:00-8:30pm and includes dinner. Free children’s program is available. To serve, please email Eric Wakeling at [email protected]. Discover more online at calvarylife.org/alpha

[ Worship & Creative Arts ]Now in our 80th year, we continue a passionate commitment to exalt God and His Word through the worship life of the church, using all the creative arts. Our strategic focus has been to foster community among artists and share more generously our resources and experiences to improve our Reach.

Our primary expression of worship is through our weekly services in the Worship Center on Sunday mornings in Celebration and Elevation. In 2011, we had a growing number of people serving out of their gift and passion involved in music, media, visual and other arts. The teaching series in 2011 helped us to grow in our faith as we studied the scriptures together: God at Work – The Life of Joseph, Life Changing Questions – Gospel of John, Rooted - Series in Colossians, and One Story - Christmas Series.

Highlights of 2011 include:• The Art Weekend, which kicked off with an interactive evening called “Dress For Mess”, featured a diverse gallery in the Lobby and the play Enchanted April with 520 in attendance.

• Easter weekend, with almost 5000 in attendance, featured services that integrated music with visual and digital art in celebrating the cross and resurrection.• The National Day of Prayer in May, with the Worship Center prepared to be a sacred space of quiet for people to come and pray, open all day• In the summer, we honored our volunteers through The Studio event in the worship center lobby, with the inspiration and challenge to be a unique instrument in the hand of God to glorify Him in our art.• The Family Patio Concert with student and adult musicians from Calvary.• Hundreds celebrated as about 50 people were baptized at Corona del Mar • The very memorable 80th Anniversary Weekend with an urban renewal project that volunteers served at on the Saturday, and then celebrating as a whole church family in One Service on Sunday morning. The OC Register ran a good article with photos of the milestone!• Thanksgiving Day Service of testimonies and music with about 400 people • The Christmas outreach production was an evening of creative arts called The Christmas Movie with over 2800 people attending and contributing childrens books for the Santa Ana public schools. A unique element was having our own Carol Mueller, who as a child acted in the classic movie, It’s a Wonderful Life. • This year, Christmas Candlelight Services were held on Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning with nearly 3000 people in attendance.

We give thanks and praise to God for His work in the worship life of Calvary, and trust Him for the future. Follow our journey at calvarynotes.com

“Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant You to be of the same mind with another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15:5,6

In addition to the Sunday services in the Worship Center, there is also a Spanish language service with nearly 300 people every Sunday morning at 10:30 am in the Chapel called Renovación, led by Pastor Aramando Reyes. Calvary’s Hispanic Ministry remained quite active in 2011 with several outreach events, as well as retreats for men, women, youth and our traditional Family Camp. In each of our retreats, we saw people make commitments to serve the Lord who have become volunteer leaders in ministries such as Club Awana (children), Women’s, Men’s and Youth groups. We had an evangelistic event in our Santa Ana LifeGroup with the film “The Climb.” Seven people accepted Christ and joined the weekly Bible study that we have on Tuesdays, so we have 10 new believers in that place. We also established a new ministry in 2011 to give support to people with addiction problems and are currently in the process of training to use the material of “Celebrate Recovery.” Finally, we had an incredible outreach event this past Thanksgiving Day, with over 300 people attending. God was faithful to provide, and we had enough food to share with all the people who visited, with a great team of cooks and volunteers to serve our guests. Thank God for His faithfulness to our Hispanic Ministry. ¡Gloria a Dios!

[ Galaxy | Jr High ]

[ Calvary Town | Birth - 6th Grade]

We have been focusing on how Jr. High Students can meet Calvary’s purpose to Connect, Grow, and Reach at Calvary Church and in Orange County to shine like stars for Jesus Christ. This summer’s theme was “More Than Do’s and Donuts,” recognizing that Christianity is about a relationship with Jesus, not just a list of rules. We experienced a fun-filled summer that challenged students to pursue a genuine

relationship with God! In July, a group of 69 headed up to Hume Lake for a life-changing week. We then led 22 people on a five-day trip for Mission Arizona, where we hosted a VBS, partnered with Phoenix Rescue Mission, and served in work projects. In August, we took students to San Onofre for a week of bonding and surfing at our annual Camp Surf. One last highlight was our annual reach event, called The 1/2 Nighter as we kicked off the school year. We filled Calvary’s Gym with a ton of local youth where we emphasized the blessings of Connecting with Calvary and Jesus. calvarylife.org/jrhigh

Looking back on our year in Children’s Ministries, this felt like a year of launching, a year of things taking off. This idea of launching means “to begin a new venture or phase.” It’s inspiring to think that after 80 years as a church, God, who sits at “Mission Control”, continues to breathe new life in our ministries.

This year we launched a new curriculum called TRU. This has profoundly changed how we approach ministry to kids, and more specifically, their families. With TRU, we recognize that parents must be primary in the spiritual formation of their children and our role as the church is to come alongside to inspire, equip and support as we walk this road together led by the Holy Spirit. We are equipping families by giving them valuable tools each week that allow for God to be part of the conversation at home in intentional ways that tie into what we are teaching the kids each Sunday. We have heard from many families who have started to incorporate this into their homes and the Lord is working. More at calvarylife.org/tru

We stepped out in faith and launched our own brand of VBS called “Flight School” - that we created from the ground up - as 590 volunteers served 1,238 kids! Almost 250 of those kids don’t go to church. With 159 kids making first-time decisions for Christ, we look back and are so thankful to know that these efforts helped kids begin their relationship with Jesus.

In the year to come we anticipate launching a brand new Nursery attached to our Worship Center so the littlest ones who attend Calvary Church can begin on the course God has for them, with the added peace of mind for our parents that their babies are only steps away. We can’t wait to see what’s ahead in the flight plan for next year!

Jesus continues to draw people to Himself. In addition to a number of new students, we were blessed to have Kristin Gackle join our team. This year we also said farewell to our beloved Laura Copeland as she moved into a new position here at Calvary. We are grateful for her five years of service

to the ministry. Our college ministry has seen healthy growth over the last year and we now average about 70 students every Sunday evening. We saw both our RIDE winter retreat and our summer houseboat trip grow by 20 students this year. Eleven students participated in a short term trip to Haiti to help build a new playground at an orphanage. Many students are now involved in various LifeGroups in our ministry, which are challenging them to grow more into the likeness of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit continues to guide us and bond us together as a family. foundationfamily.org

It’s been amazing to watch God work in our High School ministry this past year. All of our programs and events are designed to help students Connect, Grow and Reach, and we have seen this happen in the lives of our students in amazing ways. Here are a few snapshots…

A group of junior girls led by LifeGroup leader Sandy Hemphill have Connected! At first, these girls didn’t know each other, weren’t that involved in church and weren’t experiencing much intimacy with God or other believers. This summer, after Sandy’s persistent invites to Hume Lake, this group of girls Connected. Their time at Hume rocked their world and ignited their faith. Currently, this group has grown in numbers and deepened their relationships with God and each other.

Our senior guys are Growing! This group of young men spent much of their high school time disengaged from each other and numb in their faith. Yet God has proven faithful and captured their hearts and they are Growing like crazy. These guys decided that instead of having three separate LifeGroups, they wanted to have one unified group. They started a Bible study on Monday nights to GROW deeper in their faith, and they have regular “Meat Nights” where they eat steak and bacon and bond with each other. Their passion for Jesus is contagious among our group.

Once again, we sent a group of 23 students into the jungle to Reach a community in Zancudo, Ecuador. Our students helped run a high school camp for kids who don’t know Jesus. They worked tirelessly behind the scenes washing dishes, cooking and leading recreation. They also went into local villages and led VBS for little kids. The students came back passionate about Reaching the lost for Jesus Christ. Their lives have been changed and it is a catalyst to our group as a whole. edlstudents.com

[ Adult Ministries ]Adult Ministries is the umbrella name for numerous small ministries that are truly necessary for the health and encouragement of our entire adult church family.

The Senior Adult Ministry continues to be an exciting ministry as we keep discovering people with new gifts and talents who want to use their energy to minister to God’s people. From monthly dinners, outings, and serving other senior adults, it has been great to see many of our Seniors recognize that they still have much to offer our Lord Jesus and Calvary Church.

A new adult ministry, IMPACT – for adults 56-65 years of age, continued to grow this year. The first retreat was held at Tamarack Resort in Carlsbad with Rev. John Colombe as the speaker.

Helping Hands continued this year with the leadership of Jerry Feather and Bill Constant. The purpose of this group is to help Calvary members in ways others might not be able to do themselves such as moving and cleaning up. God’s House Care continued to keep our Worship Center clean every Monday through the faithful volunteer work of over 20 behind the scene Saints.

Humble Praise, one of our Sunday Morning LifeGroups, is led by Ben and Nona Strip. They have four or five faithful helpers each week. This class meets every Sunday morning to minister to our physically and mentally challenged members. They show great love and care for these dear members. Several of our congregation give of themselves faithfully to help with the teaching each week.

2011 ANNUAL REPORT10

“Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you

were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.” Colossians 2: 6-7

[ Athletics Ministries ]Athletics is a ministry “beyond the sanctuary” to help people build stronger Christ-centered relationships with opportunities for fellowship, outreach and service. We had seven active sports activities that we offered during the year: Women’s Aerobics, Men’s Basketball, Coed Bowling, Coed Softball, Coed Volleyball, Youth Basketball and Martial Arts. Thank you to all of the volunteer leaders who help with these various ministry activities.

One of the most exciting ministries has been our summer Hoop Camp for our youth. This summer 12 campers accepted Christ as their personal Savior. This year we added a coed Volleyball Camp for kids.

2011 has been another year of tremendous spiritual growth for the women at Calvary. One of these women, Kim Lomakin, Co-Director of Women’s Ministries, announced in March that she was pregnant with twin girls and resigned her position to stay home and raise her family. Shannon Reese accepted the opportunity for continued growth in her own life and absorbed Kim’s hours and responsibilities, assuming primary leadership as Director of Women’s Ministries.

As a ministry, the women of Calvary have been challenged to grow collectively as they have spent time seeking the Lord alone and together. Through seasonal “Alone with God: half days of solitude,” women have spent extended periods of time with the Lord and practiced the discipline of waiting on Him. One woman commented that she had never before practiced spending quiet time alone with God and now she had the tools to practice this habit at home.

The women of Calvary connected with one another this fall during their recent study of James. Written by Calvary women, for Calvary women and taught by Calvary women, this study has transformed lives. Desiring growth that reflects spiritual maturity, over 160 completed this study with one woman sharing, “The letter from James has given me specific instructions to live life the right way. It’s the perfect rule book for all believers and I plan to use it often!” At the end of the semester, the women joined together to reach out to their community by packing over 500 brown bag lunches for Olive Crest to distribute where needed most.

[ Men’s Ministries ]

[ Women’s Ministries ]

Calvary’s Men’s Ministries, headed up by Pastor John Sherman, had Man Camp for 120 guys in May at Palomar Christian Conference Center. Several new men came and were able to connect with the guys over manly food, activities and God’s Word brought to us by Bob Shank.

We continued to have Man Days throughout the year in order to help more men connect with others in manly fellowship. We have two Man Days (play) and two Operation Love (work) days each year. At our Man Day in August, one of the men that went to the “whittling class” connected with the teacher and one of the many good results was a weekly meeting for discipleship to take place. This is the “connection” that we pray for on these days. The Operation Love work days that help us reach have grown this year. At our last one in November, we sent out teams to eleven different homes that needed some kind of work done. The guys connect with the folks in a tangible way and everyone is blessed. Joe France and Danny Siler are a great help in this area – keeping up with jobs in between our all-men work days.

[ Equipping Ministry ]

[ Stewardship & Business Ministry ]

Mid-week Adult Equipping for 2011 offered two major series. In the spring, we presented The Alpha Course, covering the basics of the Christian Life over a relaxed time of dinner, learning and group discussion. In the fall, we offered a series entitled Playing With Fire featuring Walt Russell from Biola University. The series covered how to read and interpret the Bible. The attendees of the Playing With Fire series found it to be very informative and in many cases changed the way they read and understand scripture. Playing With Fire ended with two weeks with an expert on cults, Steve Welch, showing how both Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses misapply and misinterpret the Bible. This too was well received and found to be very informative and helpful.

Coming in 2012:• Alpha Course: Answering questions about the meaning of life. Feb 1 - April 25 • Omega Course: Exploring the book of Revelation. Feb 1 - April 25 • Marriage Oneness: Equips couples to grow in true intimacy, connection, and purpose. March 18 - May 6. • Raising a Modern Day Knight: Parenting Sons. May 2 - June 6.

Discover what Equipping Classes are coming up in 2012 at calvarylife.org/classes

2011 continued to be a challenging year for many. We desire to be a ministry that helps people connect their faith with their finances and equips them for both the spiritual and financial battles or opportunities they may face. Our classes, seminars, workshops and one-on-one budget coaching are designed to do just that.

Last year featured a number of ‘firsts’ including our ‘Raising Financially Freed-Up Kids’ series teaching key principles plus practical, age-specific action steps for students from preschool to high school. A brand new Wealth Transfer Seminar was presented by Kingdom Advisors describing how to prepare our heirs to be the stewards we hope for.

A family shared an encouraging story of faithfulness where they remained steadfast in their commitment to pay their debts even when others advised bankruptcy. Years later, God chose to honor that faithfulness with a substantial amount of money. Their first act was to give back to the One who provided. Praise God!

2011 ANNUAL REPORT12

Page 13: Calvary Church | Annual Report 2011

[ Care Ministries + Marriage & Parenting Ministries ]

Reflecting back on this past year in Calvary’s Care ministries and Marriage & Family ministries, several descriptive words come to mind: deepening, solidifying, intense, transforming, dependent and freeing. These ministries included:

• Calvary Life Counseling Center – Led by Pastor Jeff Biddle with 18 Volunteer Counselors. This year has seen individuals and couples who are hurting and exhausted from difficult concerns, receive help, love and healing.

• Pre-Marital Ministry – This ministry, now called “2 into 1” has new leaders incorporating elements to help equip engaged and also pre-engaged couples with a solid foundation for their relationships.

• Marital and Parenting Equipping and Enriching Ministry - There are eight core team members who assist in the teaching of marriage and parenting classes and help strengthen relationships.

• Hope for Our Marriage – The Shaws continue to lead the team of Encourager Couples in the restoration of marriages.

• Support Groups – God has blessed this ministry with many dedicated people who minister in areas such as: Grief, Anger, Chronic Pain & Illness, Cross Current, Single Moms, Widows, Adoption & Foster Care.

• Celebrate Recovery – Directed by Renate Schnurr with leaders Kurt and Nariko Keesling. Celebrate Recovery offers a safe place to share your experiences and hopes with others who are going through a Christ-centered recovery.

God has allowed each of these ministries to deepen and solidify their leadership and team structure. A prayer for each of the teams is that they would unify with a common ministry purpose.

Because the nature of this ministry deals with the pain associated with marriage, parenting, family, brokenness, and addictions, we see intense warfare from the enemy that keeps us dependent on God’s Word. Whether it is counseling, marriage ministry, or Celebrate Recovery, we have seen incredible transformation in people’s lives when we lovingly present God’s truth in love and grace and hold it against the lies of the enemy.

We realize that on a daily basis, we are simply tools in the Lord’s hands, and any life transformation comes solely from Him. That keeps us dependent on Him and free to relinquish this ministry into His hands, free to give Him the glory, and free from the incredible burden this type of ministry could place on any one of our leaders.

[ Calvary Christian Preschool ]In 2011, God has walked the preschool through some wonderful times and memories. There have been some staff changes, especially with some long time teachers moving on into retirement, but we have been blessed with some fantastic new additions. We have finally completed updating our playground, with many thanks to the two successful fundraisers. The teachers and parents feel more secure with the safety fence that borders the yard. The children love the new teeter-totter, pouncing from pod to pod on the stepping pods and swinging away on the monkey bars. They are more challenged and get excited about mastering the new skills.

Our after school “Good News Club” continues to grow as Liz Lee bestows her godly wisdom and love of the Bible to the next generation. She encourages them to grow in the joy of the Lord. She teaches four classes of eager little ones each week and they even memorize the entire chapter of Psalm 23! How amazing! Hearts are so blessed to witness a four-year-old reciting God’s Word. In addition, we have “Professor Ally-Oops” teaching the scientific wonders of God’s marvelous world and so much more.

In order to stay up to date with the advancing technology, each teacher was given an iPad loaded with tons of apps to engage the children in the classroom. The Computer Lab is also continually being updated and the students are quickly mastering computer skills.

Our events at the preschool continue to be blessing after blessing. “Zoo Day” was a wonderful event at Santa Ana Zoo, in which over 500 children, family, and friends attended from our preschool. Our Christmas program portrays God’s love with 180 children singing a godly message to the parents and loved ones, touching the hearts of all in attendance. We also extend God’s love beyond our campus through giving, such as taking collections of food and clothing to give to the homeless during the Thanksgiving season. Hearts continue to be touched by the hand of God working through Calvary Christian Preschool.

[ Calvary Christian School (K-8) ]Calvary Christian School exists for the purpose of Sharpening Minds & Transforming Hearts, enabling students to impact the world for Jesus Christ. Serving over 400 students in grades JK-8, CCS provides an exemplary learning environment in a Christ-centered community.

In a culture that strives for continuous school improvement, CCS made great gains in 2011. Our theme for the year was “Unity” and can be summed up well in our theme verse, Psalm 133:1, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people dwell together in unity.” United through our desire to honor God and shared values, we were able to accomplish much in 2011.

A few noteworthy highlights from 2011 include: the implementation of a junior high Spanish program, expanding opportunities in the math department, providing a resource program to meet the needs of students with learning challenges, creating a 5-year Strategic Plan, installing a new chapel curriculum and renewing a dual 6-year accreditation with WASC (Western Association of Schools & Colleges) and ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International).

While each of these accomplishments serves to further the mission of our school, none are able to express or explain the spiritual growth that happens over the course of a year. It is not about the programs we implement, but the teachers who implement these programs that impact students’ lives everyday.

The transformation of hearts at CCS is a result of godly teachers who are united in their passion to connect students to Jesus Christ. All across our campus, students are given a safe place to be curious about their Creator, their faith and the world, leading to meaningful conversations that undoubtedly shape their Christian worldview. Through these conversations and with the work of the Holy Spirit, we have seen the transforming of hearts in our students’ lives. [ Reach:Local ]

In 2011, God continued to grow Calvary’s commitment and passion to reach Orange County for Jesus Christ. We added several new local non-profit partners including the Orange County Youth Commission, Giving Children Hope and Safe Families. We also experienced more donations to Reach Local projects than ever before and continued to see an increase in volunteer involvement. [ Reach:Global ]Calvary Church is blessed to send out 96 missionary families serving in over 30 countries around the world! This year we added four missionaries to our rolls: Patricia Sawo, Kenya; Jessica W., creative access country; Lauren Stuck, Thailand; Eric & Rachel Ness, Tanzania. It is exciting to take on a national missionary and three MKs - Rachel is a Watters. We have just finished a 10-year cycle during which 44 missionary families were appointed by Calvary – 10 more families than the previous 10 year period. God is growing the missions effort, especially in the area of national workers.

This was made possible through the generous participation by many in Calvary’s Faith Promise giving, which was $1,090,410 for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011. God is faithful! Learn more at calvarylife.org/faithpromise

In addition to supporting our missionaries, we were also able to do provide funds for partnership projects with these agencies and work: Faith Comes By Hearing - Ejagham New Testament Proclaimer for Cameroon; Ton of rice to be distributed while giving gospel message; Partners International - Joshua Vision India training master teachers, DAI – Masters Degree program support for two students, and Dual Reach - support.

During the 2011 calendar year we sent out four short term mission teams to Haiti, Ecuador and Mexico. A total of 167 people raised a total of $178,230 for their teams and accomplished great things through their visits. In addition, we supported six individuals who went out on summer trips.

In the fall, we also launched our Corner Bookstore Clean Water Project partnership between Calvary Church and Wycliffe Bible Translators. By purchasing the “Item of the Week”, 100% of the proceeds will be given to Wycliffe’s Operation Clean Water project and used to help supply water for a thirsty world. As our missionaries work among people who are without even the basic life need of water, demonstrating God’s love by meeting the physical needs of the people opens their heart to the message of One who can supply all their needs. And, this allows the missionaries access to get the written Word translated so that the people can receive that “water that keeps them from ever thirsting again”.

We had a record number of people take the guide to Prayer for the Muslim World and pray during Ramadan. Three classes on Understanding World Religions were offered, two on Buddhism and one on Islam. These classes, taught by our own Calvary missionaries, covered the basics of the Buddhist and Muslim faith and how we as Christians here in Orange County can share our faith in Jesus Christ with those who are now living right next door.

Liz Gold, Missions Director, visited 10 missionaries in the area of the world where our missionaries serve. Families and individuals were so encouraged to have their church come to the field and see the work! From our Hispanic congregation, Pastor Armando Reyes and his family visited the Stuck and Grain families in Uruguay and saw firsthand how Calvary is reaching South America. Our Mission Team members for 2011 were: Craig Bryson, Anker Christensen, Paul Holsted, Katy Lang, Karen Ottoson, Harold Stephens, and Mark Zwirner.

Reach Global Week 2011, invited us to be a part of the mission to Build His Church. Over 60 missionaries joined us in March to share in our Lifegroups and other activities. This year was also very special as we invited “family” to be our guest speakers on both Sunday mornings. Paul Eshleman, Vice President of Campus Crusade for Christ (now CRU) shared on “The Urgency of the Hour” from Matthew 24:14 and his experiences as director of The Jesus Film Project for over 25 years. Then on our closing Sunday, Josh McDowell spoke on “Truth and Mission in the 21st Century”. Josh has addressed more than 10 million young people, giving over 24,000 talks in 118 countries and written or co-authored 120 books including More than a Carpenter and New Evidence That Demands a Verdict. You can watch both messages online at calvarylife.org/missions

Over 200 people participated in Meals for Haiti on Saturday morning in the Gym. Over 50,000 packages were then distributed by our Haiti Global Short Term Team as they took the meals to hungry children of Haiti in June. Then on that same Saturday evening, we were challenged to pray for Pastor Farshid and other Iranian pastors and leaders that had been imprisoned for sharing their faith and distributing the New Testament in Iran.

In October, we heard from Adrian DeVisser as he shared how “Grace Opens the Door to Truth”. Being a member of one of our partnership projects with Asian Access, we were pleased to hear about how God is building His Church in Sri Lanka through the vision of this man and now his son and family.

God continues to raise up new generations that are willing to go out and serve Him on the mission field. Please pray as we work with several new people who are interested in seeing what God will do in their lives. And, pray for the finances that will be needed to send them. [ Update on Fiscal 2011 Financials ]

[ Update on July 2011 - December 2011 Financials ]

It is exciting to look back on another year of ministry and give thanks for what the Lord continues to accomplish through the people of Calvary Church. We appreciate you investing your time, talent and treasure to make all of the ministry described in this report possible. The tables below detail the financial results from our Fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2011.

We were blessed to end the year with our General Fund income slightly higher than our expenses at $3,243 and we had a missions fund loss of $35,450 which went against our missions reserve funds. We were short of our budget goal and were unable to do everything we wanted to expand our reach and improve our facility, but through your sacrificial support, we have what we need to continue the ministry we have been called to carry out in Orange County and around the world.

For the first six months of the fiscal year 2012 we are running behind our budget target. Keep Calvary’s finances in your prayers and pray for wisdom for our leaders as we strive to strategically multiply the gifts you give to impact as many people for Christ’s kingdom as possible.

If you would like any additional financial information (including a copy of our audited financial statements) or have questions, please contact Michael Welles, our Executive Pastor of Administration, at [email protected] or 714-550-2313. You can also visit calvarylife.org/giving to learn more.

[ Update on the Heritage Building ]

[ Update on the Restoration Project - as of December 2011 ]

We are excited about the Restoration Project, which started at the end of 2010 and is enabling us to have facilities that support our ministry plan. We received initial 3-year commitments from 337 families and individuals of close to $3 million. There are also many who have not pledged, but just given toward the project. With all of this in mind, we revised our budget from $6.5 million to $3.1 million (the pledges plus unpledged gift total). With our new budget, we will be able to do critical roof and air conditioning repairs, create a new Nursery in the Worship Center, create a Student Space in the lower level of the C Building and renovate Samsvick Chapel.

Through 2011, we received about $1.5 million. Part of this was used to finish the repair phase including the replacement of six building roofs and installation of eight new energy efficient air conditioning/heating systems, which will save future utility costs. By doing it all as one large project, we also saved in labor and crane costs. We were also able to greatly reduce expenses through the donation of time by key volunteers with experience in these areas.

We should have building permits for the next phase of the new Nursery space in the Worship Center in early 2012 and hopefully be able to complete construction by the end of the year. We will also start planning and getting permits for the Student Space and Samsvick renovation, which we hope to complete together in 2013.

We encourage you to join us in this journey of faith, prayer and giving if you have not already. Discover more about the Restoration Project at calvarylife.org/restoration

We own and operate the Heritage Medical Building adjacent to our campus. We have put on hold the original Restoration Project plans to convert some of the suites to ministry space and will continue to lease space in the building, although we do hope to fill vacancies with potential future Reach partners. The rental income offsets the loan payments and operational expenses. For the year ended June 30, 2011, we earned $5,118 after financing and operational expenses.

As we look ahead, our Reach ministry will be intentionally emphasized in some exciting new ways over the next two years. We are prayerfully planning special services, developing more training opportunities and providing resource materials that I believe the Spirit of God will use to help us truly Reach Orange County for Jesus Christ. We have been growing in our “good deeds” to assist those in need. We also want to be clear with the “good news” of Jesus’ salvation.

I am so thankful for our Elder Board which meets weekly to hold you all up in prayer. We are blessed with Elders who love Jesus Christ and Calvary Church, and humbly pursue what is always best for our ministry. Please pray for them as we move forward into 2012 and beyond, just as they pray for you. These men are a joy to serve with, and you can learn more about each of Calvary’s elders at calvarylife.org/leaders.

This past year, as we celebrated Calvary’s 80th Anniversary in the fall, we studied the rich book of Colossians together in our “Rooted” series. As I consider our church family - the incredible legacy of faithfulness and the countless stories of God at work in people’s lives - these words of the Apostle Paul ring true for Calvary Church just as they did for the church of the Colossians 2000 years ago:

“We give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love which you have for all the saints…” Colossians 1:3, 4
