at
Drapers' Hall, Throgmorton Street, London EC2N 2DQ
Wednesday 17th June 2015
6.45pm for 7.30pm, Carriages at 10.50pm
The Principal Guests will be the Irish architects Sheila O'Donnell and John Tuomey recipients of the Royal Gold Medal 2015, the world’s most prestigious architecture award. In his citation the RIBA President Stephen Hodder said:‐ “O’Donnell + Tuomey’s work is always inventive– striking yet so well considered, particular to its place and brief, beautifully crafted – and ever developing. It is an absolute joy and inspiration to hear them describe their work, and always a delight to experience one of their buildings. Sheila and John are at the vanguard of contemporary Irish architecture and I am delighted they are to receive this lifetime honour.”

Drapers Hall
As the trading activities of the guilds expanded, members required a Hall where they could meet to discuss and co‐ordinate business. At first, they used individuals' houses but in the 1420s the Drapers' guild decided to build its own Hall. The present Hall, situated in Throgmorton Street, was bought from King Henry VIII in 1543 for the sum of 1,800 marks (approximately £1,200). This had been the house of Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Essex and Chief Minister to Henry, but had been forfeited to the King on Cromwell's execution in July 1540. Destroyed by the Great Fire of 1666, Drapers’ Hall was rebuilt between 1667 and 1671 to designs by Edward Jarman. In 1772, it was again rebuilt after a fire which did considerable damage and, in the 1860s, the frontage was changed and the interior altered by Herbert Williams. It was later altered once more in 1898‐9 by Sir Thomas Graham Jackson. The Entrance Hall This part of Drapers’ Hall was constructed at the end of the 19th century to designs by Sir Thomas Graham Jackson. The bronze doors of the Throgmorton Street entrance lead into an oak‐panelled corridor relieved by a stained glass window containing the coats of arms of Sir Francis Drake, Lord Nelson, Earl St. Vincent and Sir Walter Raleigh. Drake, Nelson and St. Vincent were Freemen; Raleigh was included because the Drapers subscribed to his venture to Virginia. The corridor is lined with portraits of the Lambarde family which were given to the Company by a descendant of William Lambarde, the Elizabethan antiquary and founder of
Queen Elizabeth’s College almshouses, Greenwich. On display too is an early 17th century crimson cloak worn by Jane Lambarde for her portrait by Marc Geerhearts. Sheltering under the staircase is the statue ‘A girl fastening her sandal’ by Rudolf Schadow, which was made in 1881. The marble and alabaster staircase has 15th century Italian details incorporated into Jackson’s work of 1898. The staircase window contains the royal coat of arms and those of the City, the Drapers’ Company and early Drapers and benefactors. It was renewed after damage during the Second World War. The Livery Hall The Livery Hall was enlarged to its present size by Herbert Williams in the 1860s. The twenty‐eight marble columns provide ideal spaces for the display of the Company’s collection of royal portraits including King William III by Sir Godfrey Kneller, George III by Sir Nathanial Dance and George IV by Sir Thomas Lawrence. Richard Belt’s statue Hypatia and a copy of John Gibson’s The Tinted Venus, both purchased in the 1890s, grace the north end of the room. In 1901 the Company commissioned Herbert Draper, a neo‐classical painter who had recently been awarded a gold medal by the Royal Academy, to create paintings for the Livery Hall ceiling panels. These were produced between 1903 and 1910. The Company was at first uncertain whether the artist’s choice – scenes from The Tempest and A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream was appropriate but the artist persevered and completed the remaining space with representations of History, Science, Ethics and Literature.
