    what is calligraphy

    • Calligraphy is a finer branch of paleography, or

    ancient writing. In some countries, such as China,

     people considered calligraphy an art, or even more

    important than art.• Calligraphy is the art of fine writing or script. It is

    derived from the ree! word !alla meaning

    "beautiful", and graphia meaning "writing."

    Calligraphy is essentially defined as "written letters,

    dependent upon the flow and rhythm of the pen or

     brush" #pg. $%&, 'ohnston, (dward).

    The ancient art of calligraphy has withstood thetests of time and is still flourishing today,

    despite significant changes in its status over the

    centuries. The style of modern letterforms may

     be derived from any number of influences, pastor present.

    • There is a wide range of tools and materials

    available to the calligrapher, more varied and

    imaginative than ever before, enabling letteringartists to create innovative, interpretive wor!s.

    • There are many styles of Calligraphy. The three main

    ones are othic, *oman, and Te+t which includes ld

    (nglish. "(very student should learn the old (nglish

    • *oman is a columnar style of writing with curves.

    othic is similar to modern print, but more rounded.

    • Te+t is a very fancy, angular medieval style of writing.

    Equipment used inCalligraphy

    • ;ellum

    ;ellum is a velvety surface which is a littlespringy.

    • It is usually calf s!in, but occasionally made of

    goat s!in.

    • s!ins are soa!ed in a lime solution for A/ to A

    days. This washes away salt, and brea!s down

    the fibers.

    • Parchment

    • Parchment is sheeps!in processed li!e vellum. It is

    then pounced and shaved.

    • Pounce is a fine powder that prevents in! from

    flooding.• Parchment is oilier and rougher than vellum.

    • It is thinner than vellum and was for boo!s by scribes.

    • Paper 

    • Paper comes from the root word papyrus.

    • 3igh -uality papers are made from vegetable fiber

     pulp.

    Cheaper papers are made from wood pulp.• Paper comes different si@es, assortments, and colors.

    • It can be dyed to a warm brown shade that mimics

     parchment.

    • In! 

    The most common in! recipes were for carbon in!s.• The recipe itself is of lamp%blac! or other pigments, gum, and water.

    • In A$F, aniline dyes for paints and in!s were developed because

     pen companies were having problems finding in! colors and

     pigments for their own pens.

    • People li!ed them better because they were less corrosive than

    carbon in!s.

    • 1 good calligraphy in! should flow freely with no spread, dry

    -uic!ly, and be stable when it dries.

    • 9tic! in! is a favorite calligraphy in! that comes in a solid form. It is

    mi+ed with distilled water or boiled with tap water to become usable.

    • Colors

    • Colors are useful for multi% colored letters, decorations,

    and borders.

    Pencils

    • Pencils are used for ruling writing sheets. They must

     be fine with hard points. 0or paper ruling, which

    !eeps your lines straight, use 3 and 32.

    Carpenter pencils are wide and flat.• 0or ruling, use a two foot wooden ruler with a metal

    edge.

    • 2rushes

    • 2rushes have three main purposes.

    • The first is to put in! into the pens. It usually loo!s better if you

    ta!e the brush and load the in! rather than simply dipping the

     pen. 0or this 4ob, use medium si@ed, round hair sable brushes.

    2rushes can also be used for si@ing and color.

    •  0or coloring use one brush for each color. If you have a shortage

    of brushes, clean each brush thoroughly before using another

    color. 2rushes can also be used as a writing tool.

    •  1 common brush is the Chinese bamboo brush with hair tips.

    Then there is the flat tipped sable brush, which is almost the

    e-uivalent of the edged pen. *ound hairs are used for lettering.
