Recipes Wanted! Everyone has a favorite recipe - it's the one your friends

ask you for or the one your grandmother used to make for you when you were a kid. Well, we want to share those recipes! As a fundraiser to support the Hospitality Team, we will put everyone's favorites into a collection of good eats! You can submit your recipe by sending it via email to [email protected] or put it in the small basket on the Coffee Cart on Sunday. If you have a story to share, add that as well. Knowing the background makes it special and adds even more interest. We will be collecting these for a few weeks, I hope you will take the time to write it down and submit it. Thank you for supporting us! Laura Schaffell & The Hospitality Team Senior Book Club The Senior Book Club met at Tom and Leslie Becks home on November 5, 2015 to discuss The House Girl by Tara Conklin. As usual our discussion was lively. We are all avid readers. On Ed Linbergs recommendation, we will be reading The Children Act by Ian McEwan next. We will meet for our discussion of this novel on January 7, 2016 at Mary Brills home. The Children Act is the story of a High Court judge in London presiding over cases in family court. She is an expert in considering the sensitivities of culture and religion when handing down her verdicts. She is well respected and deeply immersed in the nuances of her particular field of law. At 221 pages, the book should be an easy read for this upcoming holiday period. There are currently three copies of this book on the Fullerton Library shelves. Chapel on Wheels Fundraiser Chapel on Wheels has another fundraiser at Chic-fil-A on Tuesday, Nov.17 Flyers are on the counter in the office.

Seniors Meet Tuesday Nov. 17, 2015|

The Senior Adults are meeting this coming Tuesday, November 17, at 12 noon in Fellowship Hall for our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. If you havent signed up yet to bring something, the list is on the counter in Donnas office. If bringing something is keeping you from coming, no problem, there will be plenty of food. We hope that all seniors will join us for this celebration of our many blessings. Following our feast, there will be a short meditation time and throughout much fellowship. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for helping with the annual Christmas Tea to be held Tuesday, December 15, at 2:00 P.M. We will continue the tradition of meeting first in Chapman Lounge for refreshments and then move to the Sanctuary for the Christmas Program. SENIORS, if you have never shared in our gatherings or if you can only come occasionally, this is the time to share the holidays with your fellow seniors in our congregation. Save these dates and we will see you then.

    Blessings, Ted and Sammie

Expressing Your Thanks During this special time of Thanksgiving, you will have the opportunity to give thanks to people in your lives to whom you are grateful. The Notes of Thanks will be blessed during the Thanksgiving service on November 22 and will be mailed on Monday from the church office. We will pay the postage for you. The Worship Ministry

    Annual Congregational Dinner November 22

Our annual meeting will be soon upon us. We have important decisions to be made, who will lead our church in 2016, budget and other important issues. All members are urged to be a part of this event. Lin Garcia will be overseeing the meal this year along with help from the Elders. Elders please be in Fellowship Hall at 9:00 a.m. to help set up for the luncheon.

Annual In-Gathering Of Food Items Happens Next Sunday On the Sunday prior to our nations Thanksgiving holiday, November 22, we will continue a tradition of several decades in our congregational life. Its the annual in-gathering of food items that you are encouraged to bring with you to worship and to place them below the beautiful cornucopia which will grace the Communion Table next Sunday. All of the items that are brought to the church on Thanksgiving Sunday will be taken to the Food Distribution Center operated by Pathways of Hope. So, we hope you will not only bring yourself to worship on Nov. 22, but that youll bring a can of soup, or beans, corn or some other canned item. Packaged items, such as cereal or rice or crackers, will also be welcome. Lets fill the chancel to overflowing with food items for Pathways of Hope. Thanks, in advance, for your generous participation in this annual in-gathering of food! The Outreach Ministry FIMA Community Thanksgiving Service Tuesday, Nov. 24, 7:00 P.M. its study of A Spirituality of Homecoming by Henri Nouwen on November 15 & 22. They will begin an Advent/Christmas study on Sunday, November 29 at 9 A.M. in Chapman Lounge. The course well be studying is entitled Meeting the Messiah, sub-titled Scriptures for the Advent Season." It was developed by Kara Lassen Oliver for Upper Room Books. A Change In Plans For several weeks we have been telling you about a one-day visit to an orphanage in Tijuana for our congregation and the congregation of Casa de Oracin. We learned on Sunday that the plans have been changed. The Director of the orphanage would like a small group of folks to come down for a preliminary visit before a larger group comes down. So, the planned visit on Dec. 5 has been moved into next year. When the details of this activity are much clearer than they are now, well inform you. We still hope that at least 12 to 15 people from both congregations will choose to be part of this activity when it happens next year. Tri-Tip Input Is Due On Nov. 15

If you worked on the Tri-Tip Project this year, you are reminded that the survey document sent to you almost two-weeks ago needs to be completed and returned to the Outreach Ministry box in the office by this Sunday, November 15th. We will tally the responses concerning how the funds should be distributed. This information will be presented to the Outreach Ministry on Wednesday, November 18th to aid them in making a decision about which organizations will receive gifts this year. All persons who volunteered for the Tri-Tip Project this year are reminded that they are welcome to attend the Outreach Ministry meeting on 11/18 beginning at 7 P.M. The discussion of the Tri-Tip Project will be the first item on the agenda, so those who dont want to stay for the full meeting will be free to leave, if they so choose. The Outreach Ministry Music Ministry in Hawaii Greetings from Point Loma Nazarene University where I have begun my senior year of college. I have been a member of the PLNU Concert Choir for the past three years, and have been blessed to go on one or two tours each year. This year, we are busily preparing for an exciting year of outstanding music and ministry. In addition to performing at academic collegiate festivals and annual concerts, our Concert Choir ministers the love of Jesus in churches and schools throughout the Western United States. This year, we are planning a ministry tour to churches and schools in Hawaii. This tour to Hawaii that occurs once every 4 years will enable our choir to give daily concerts and minister to countless individuals with Christs love. We are privileged to represent our university and our Lord through this ministry opportunity. As I prepare to depart on March 5, 2016, I would appreciate your support, as my church family, for this upcoming event through prayer and financial giving. My total cost for this

tour is $1000.00 that needs to be raised by December 5, 2015. Any contribution you feel led to give would be appreciated. Please make your check payable to Point Loma Nazarene University and return it to the music department with my name on the envelope. Thank you for praying for me and showing your continued support as I endeavor to be obedient to Gods call on my life. With love and gratitude, Emily Malotte

Youre Invited Ed Linberg extends a cordial invitation to members of First Christian Church to attend one of

the two Christmas Concerts to be presented by the Mountainside Master Chorale on Saturday, December 12 at 7:30 P.M. and on Sunday, December 13 at 3:30 P.M. Both concerts will be held in the sanctuary of First Christian Church, Pomona located at the northwest corner of Park and Artesia, just west of Garey Avenue, a block plus north of I-10. The theme of these concerts is A Gospel Christmas. Many of the selections to be presented by the Chorale are very familiar, e.g. Silent Night, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, Deck the Hall, Ill Be Home for Christmas, and from Messiah the beloved Hallelujah Chorus. What is different about the settings of these familiar pieces is that they have been arranged in either a jazz or gospel style. The Chorale will be supported by its outstanding accompanist, Pro Mojica, and his jazz combo, on almost all of the numbers to be presented. Mr. Mojica is a master of jazz from his piano as those who have heard him will attest. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $17 for students and Seniors who are age 65+. We believe we have enough for the group rate which is just $10 per ticket. If this sounds like a concert youd enjoy, let Ed know of your interest between now and Sunday, December 6, so he can secure tickets.

Advent is Coming! Save the Date!

For many years we have been blessed with a youth group that

has decorated our Sanctuary for the Advent/Christmas season and provided us with a beautiful Hanging of the Greens Service. This year we are not as blessed with a large number of youth so the decorating falls on all of us. We will be having an All Church Decorating Party on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 4 P.M. in preparation for the Hanging of the Greens service Sunday 11/29 led by Pastor Dale. We are asking that anyone able come out to help get all of the decorations from the basement and put up in the Sanctuary. We know this will be a busy Sunday since the Annual Dinner is that morning but we are counting on you. Well spend a day at church. Who knows there may be chili! Please put this on your calendar and help us prepare our Sanctuary for the season. For planning purposes if you are able to come please let Chris or the church office know. Thank you! Chris

Mitten Tree This month we will be collecting hats, scarves, socks,

mittens and gloves for the Mitten Tree that will be in the Narthex during the month of December. Each Wednesday during December we will give out approximately 40 tickets at the Hot Meal on Wednesday nights and the recipients in turn will come over to the Sanctuary building and choose an item from the tree. Look for the green and red buckets in the Narthex. If you would like to volunteer an hour or so anytime during the month of December, please get in touch with Sue Harless and/or Diane Daugherty who are the coordinators of this project. Reminder to Save Campbell Soup Labels With the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons upon us, more of us will be entertaining and that means more Campbells Soup cans being opened. The Disciples Women (Betty Rollo is our coordinator) ask that you continue to save your Campbell product bar codes from the label on the cans or just bring the whole label and Betty will cut out the bar code. Bring them to church and deposit in the silver box on the counter in Donnas office. These labels are sent to Woodhaven Home for the developmentally disabled in Jefferson City, MO Here are some of the products in addition to Campbell Soup labels that you can save: Pepperidge Farms breads, crouton, rolls and stuffing, frozen puff pastry, turnovers, garlic breads, cakes, BIC pens (all kinds) , highlighters, dry erase markers, Prego, V8, Pace, Goldfish, Dannon Products, Glad, Post cereals (all kinds) Thanks for your assistance with this worthwhile project.

Thanksgiving Offering To Be Received On The Next Two Sundays The 2015 Thanksgiving Offering will be received during worship on both November 15 and 22. This offering benefits the Colleges, Universities, Seminaries and Divinity Houses affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) across our

nation. These learning communities, of which Chapman University and the Disciples Seminary Foundation are based in our Region, are an extension of the church challenging students to understand and respond to Gods call to serve. Disciples have a long history of both founding and supporting institutions of higher learning, encouraging students in their intellectual pursuits. Disciples are still committed to higher education. Our gifts in support of this years Thanksgiving Offering will help to underwrite the education of students attending one of our 14 undergraduates institutions and our 7 seminaries or divinity houses. What we give will invest in students and help keep education costs down for them and their families. Our gifts will also provide scholarships and support for spiritual life offices on campuses such as the DOC Students program at Chapman. (DOC, by the way, stands for Disciples on Campus.) Further our gifts will provide scholarships and support for those pursuing theological education in preparation for ministries in and through our congregations everywhere as well as in mission work around the world. To participate in the 2015 Thanksgiving Offering, make your check payable to our congregation and write Thanksgiving Offering on the memo line, or you may give cash. Put your gift in any amount, in one of the special offering envelopes that were distributed this past Sunday as an insert in the worship bulletin. Our goal for this offering is $875. We are most grateful for your support of the 2015 Thanksgiving Offering. The Outreach Ministry

Christmas Cards for Japan The Outreach Ministry Team will be participating in the Christmas cards for Japan project again this year. Cards will be available on the table in the Narthex starting on November 22. We are asking you to sign the cards and then to pray for the Japanese people during the holidays. These churches come to us from our Partner Missionary in Japan, Jeffrey Mensendiek.

Sendai Kawadaira Church, (no kindergarten) Pastor: Rev. Keiji Kojima, Membership: 45 Established: 1899; Address: 1-17-10 Kawadaira Aoba-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture 981-0954 JAPAN About the church: Located in Sendai City (population 1 million), this church was started by the Disciples of Christ, USA. The church was not damaged during the disaster. The present pastor is a fresh graduate from seminary. He has been ministering since April 2014. Prayer Concerns: That we can share in the joy of worship with all the people who come on Sundays. That through the ministry of our Sunday School many children will be led to church. Iizaka Church, (no kindergarten) Pastor: Rev. Toshihisa Suzuki Membership: 5 Established: 1888; Address: 17-6 Aza-Kaminaka Kawahara, Iizaka-cho, Fukushima-shi, Fukushima Prefecture 960-0201 JAPAN About the church: Iizaka is a town known for its hot springs. In the past many great leaders came out of this church, but now the flame of Christian presence in the community is small. The small church is supported by Rev. Suzuki from the neighboring Kawamata Church. This year they decided to do something new in worship by planning a musical worship. Six out of eight of our members in attendance were able to participate by providing some music for the worship. This was a very blessed time for us. Prayer Concerns: All church members are elderly. We pray that they will continue in health, and be able to attend worship on Sundays. We pray that young people will come to church, and that we will be able to pass on the faith to the next generation. Aizu Wakamatsu Church, (pronounced I-zoo wah-kah-mah-tsoo), (no kindergarten) Pastor: Rev. Katsuro Yaegashi; Membership: 36; Established: 1891; Address: 9-20 Miyamachi Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture 965-0801 JAPAN About the church: Aizu Wakamatsu is the largest city in Aizu (population 125,000.) Aizu is the part of Fukushima which has many mountains and is far from the coast. It is a rural community, with many rice fields. Though not as high as other areas, the Aizu area also received high levels of radiant after the nuclear disaster. People for other areas with higher radiation have evacuated to Aizu Wakamatsu. The church proudly carries on in the tradition of the congregational church. Rev. Yaegashi used to be a high school teacher for many years. After retirement he entered seminary, and just graduated this year. He came to the church in Wakamatsu April of this year. Prayer Concerns: We aim to be the kind of church that values each individual, and seeks to love our neighbors. That we will be an open and inviting church, serving society and committed to social issues.

    Accompanying Fleeing Syrian Refugees

Your partnership and generous financial contributions are immediately being used to provide assistance to Syrians fleeing extreme violence. Just in the past few months, Week of Compassion has continued our longstanding Syrian relief efforts with our partners at Church World Service and Global Ministries to provide emergency assistance to these individuals in Hungary, Lebanon, Egypt, Greece, Serbia, and Syria. One of the many refugees receiving our support is a two-month-old girl from Aleppo, Syria, named Kausar. Kausar and her family are Kurdish, a long oppressed ethnic minority. The family was living in this warzone until their house was leveled by errant artillery fire. Week of Compassion supported them with food, warmth, and sanitation as they fled through Hungary and stayed the night with many other refugees on the floor of Budapest's Keleti Railway Station. Our partners provide mobile teams dispatched to refugee congregation points, which distribute blankets, hygiene kits, and food to thousands of vulnerable families. Kausar's family had just spent three grueling days hiking through the Serbian woods on their way to join relatives in Germany. Through the support of Week of Compassion, our partners have made this dangerous journey much safer for two-month-old Kausar and so many other vulnerable refugees. Another family Week of Compassion has been accompanying at the same railway station had come from the infamous Syrian city of Raqqah, the capital of ISIS. As a Kurdish militia threatened ISIS control of the city in June, ISIS gave the Kurds still present just three days to leave or die. Mohamed, his wife, and 2 young children aged 3 and 5 fled immediately, making their way all the way to Budapest with only $217 to try to start a new life. This family also received food, blankets, and hygiene kits from our partners. In addition, Week of Compassion is working with Global Ministries to provide emergency food and winterization items to some of the most vulnerable Syrian families still living in the southwestern part of the country. Through our partners, we are delivering emergency supplies to Syrians in Lebanon and Syria with medication, rent, winterization items, and schooling for children. Thank you for your continued support to Week of Compassion--your partnership enables the church to accompany these refugees as they flee violence and not have to walk alone.
