Parlor Class To Study “Embracing Spiritual Awakening” Last Sunday, the Parlor Class chose the third of six courses from what’s known as “The Embracing Series” for its next course of study. It is “Embracing Spiritual Awakening.” This is a DVD course that will begin on Sunday, April 12 at 9 A.M. in Chapman Lounge. We will see the video presentation and have the opportunity to discuss it using a Student’s Book to remind us of the content of each video session. The Student’s Book will cost $13. Payment can be made at the first session on April 12, or can be paid in installments if spreading out the cost will be helpful for any participants. In addition, we chose a follow-up course to follow “Embracing Spiritual Awakening.” It will feature Tom Berlin making video presentations to stimulate our discussion. It is entitled: “6 Decisions That Will Change Your Life.” If this sounds interesting to know let us know of your interest and we’ll keep you posted about the date we’ll begin this second DVD course we selected last Sunday. On both Palm/Passion Sunday and Easter Sunday, we’ll be reading and reflecting on the texts appointed for these two Sundays by the Revised Common Lectionary. We’d be delighted to have any one who is interested in discussing the familiar texts for these two Sundays to join us. The Parlor Class

Easter Offering 2015 We are

receiving the annual Easter Offering on both this Sunday—Palm/Passion Sunday—and next Sunday—Easter. As reported in the article about this in last week’s issue of “The Caller,” our goal for this offering is $1,350.00. To date we have received $85. Our Easter Offering supports the General Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The ministries supported by this annual special offering are Around the Corner, Around the Globe and Around the Church. Around the Corner - we partner with congregations and regions to create communities of compassion and care; we partner with congregations and regions to work toward a just immigration system, as well as to stand against human trafficking of women and children; and to celebrate and welcome diversity at the Table of the Lord through the nurture of ethnic congregations, i.e. Hispanic, Asian and African-American. Around the Globe - our historical records help the Chinese tell the story of Christian mission personnel and lives saved during the invasion of China by the Japanese in World War II; Disciples’ students experience the “living laboratory of ecumenical encounters” in a global community that joined the knowledge and praxis of Christian Unity; and work in a prison ministry in Mexico. Around the Church - we partner in efforts to create a culture of generosity moving from bread and wine to faith and giving; partnering with regions and general ministries to offer accounting services that save the church over $400,000 a year; and through the ministry of our General Minister and President, Dr. Sharon Watkins, who represents Disciples nationally and internationally day in and day out. The Easter Offering makes us Partners in Mission from our Doorsteps to the farthest reaches of the Globe. For more information about the work that is accomplished by the Easter Offering you are invited to go to this website: www, disciples mission fund. org. Use the special envelope to make your gift in support of the Easter Offering, or simply write “Easter Offering” on the memo line of your check. Thank you for your generous support of the 2015 Easter Offering. The Outreach Ministry

“The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament declares his handiwork.” [Ps. 19:1] The tradition of telling the Easter story with the singing of a cantata is

one that is rooted in the very heart of our Christian worship. The Chancel Choir, under the direction of Mitch Hanlon, will present Lift High the Cross, arranged by Lloyd Larson. The themes will inspire us to remember the stories of the crucifixion and resurrection we have heard since childhood. But there was a time when the average worship goer knew nothing of this glorious miracle. The hierarchy of the church relegated the story of Easter to that of a Holy Mystery, along with the stories of the birth of Jesus, the creation of the world, and God’s free gift of grace. They decided that average people—people like us—were not worthy of knowing these mysteries. Just as average people were barred from participating in the sacraments of Communion because they lacked the wisdom to understand its meaning, people were not even told of the stories of God’s miraculous acts for the same reason. But the music composers had ways of bringing the “secrets” of God to the people. They developed what was called “sacred representations” enacting these stories right in the church. When the hierarchy of the church deemed them inappropriate, and literally kicked the plays and musicians out of the church, the players put their enactments on wagons, and performed them from village to village. These became known as “miracle plays.” Thus marked the beginning of more formal musical creation outside the church. In fact, the first carols were Easter carols. For the first time, people like you and me heard the story of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and his resurrection. Until that time the story of eternal life was not a gift of God, but the privilege of the church to be withheld. On Palm Sunday when we hear the story of salvation created in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, let us remember the time when people heard this miraculous story for the first time, and let us hear it anew! I hope God leads you to worship on Sunday. “See” you in church! In love, Bob Hasty, Worship Team Chair

It’s Working for Us Report A good crowd gathered on Sunday, March 22 after the 10:15 service to hear from a few of the other churches and leaders in our community about what is working for them. Jon Sanders and Barbara Johnson shared what

First Congregational Church is doing with a program, “Get on the Bus,” taking children to see their parents in prison on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Jon has a cooking class that he started many years ago and that group wanted to do something to help others so that group cooks the meal for their annual fundraiser. Christine Monson, from First Presbyterian shared about the shower/breakfast ministry they do on the fourth Saturday of the month for the homeless. Jill Scott shared that the food that is grown at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church goes to Pathways to help with their food distribution program While we learned what others were doing, we were encouraged by both Jason Phillips from Fullerton ACT and Michael Shepherd from Pathways that it is not about doing and adding more programs but focusing on how we can all work together. Watch for detail on Part II coming up in the future.
