I am one of about 300 ministers in this church. All who have been baptized in the name of Jesus Christ share a call to minister in his name.
The Worship Ministry Team meets each month and guides our progress toward meeting theneeds of our diverse congregation and community now and in the future. The Discipleship MinistryTeam meets monthly and develops classes, programs, and ministries to help all of us grow in faith. The Hospitality and Welcome Ministry Team meets monthly and empowers our congregation toenthusiastically welcome everyone who enters our church. They also help us to get to know eachother through social gatherings and times of fellowship.
The Stewardship and Property Ministry Team educates all of us on living faithfully inrelationship to God, ourselves and one another. They also oversee our resources and guide ourchurch in making the best use of those resources. The Outreach Ministry Team helps us be a beaconof hope in our community and around the world. They continually invite us to generously share ourresources to meet the needs of brothers and sisters whose resources are inadequate.
In addition to the opportunities you have to minister by participating in one of these ministryteams, our church encourages you to pray and discern how God would have you serve your
neighborhood, workplace, or the larger community. If you feel called to serve through a newministry, we would be delighted to help you any way we can.How much ministry could we be doing if every one of our members offered an hour a week in
service through or with our church? How many more people in our community would recognizeFirst Christian Church as the loving community they need if we extended ourselves wherever we arecalled?
While many of our societys support systems are breaking down, our church is gettingstronger. We are welcoming new people into the ministries we offer. We are developing newprograms to meet previously unaddressed needs. We are adapting long-standing ministries to thechanging needs of our community and culture. The message we offer will always remain the same.Generations have witnessed to the gospel in word and deed through First Christian Church.
The message proclaimed nearly a hundred years ago brought hope to a rural communitysurrounded by orange groves and oil fields. That same message now continues to bring hope to adiverse, highly developed, suburban community where houses, shopping centers, and roadwayshave replaced most of the orange groves and oil derricks. In one hundred and seven years, thecollective wisdom of this church has grown tremendously, and it now reaches around the world in itsdetermination to proclaim the gospel.
Thanks for playing your part in this vibrant community of faith! Join us for a ministry teammeeting this month and help us extend our ministries even further.
Peace,

Take Our "Snap" QuizWhat percentage of SNAP
households included a child, anelderly person, or a disabled person?Is it 26%, 56%, 66% or 76%?
SNAP, in case you don't know, is theacronym for the program that was formerlyknown as "food stamps." It stands forSupplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.Last month, the House of Representativesapproved a Farm Bill that removed funding forSNAP benefits. For decades the Farm Bill hasbeen a bipartisan bill that provided a safety netfor our nation's farmers and low-incomeAmericans. With the action of the House thefuture of the Farm Bill is uncertain. There ismuch misunderstanding about SNAP. So usinginformation from Feeding America, a non-profit hunger relief advocate, we'll try toincrease understanding about SNAP. Choosethe number you feel is the right one for thequestion above. Then go to page 6 to get theanswer to this and other questions aboutSNAP.

Answer To The "Snap" Quiz And MoreQuestion #1 -- What percentage of
SNAP households included a child, an elderlyperson, or a disabled person? Answer #1 --76%. The vast majority of SNAP benefits go tohouseholds that include a child, an elderlyperson or a disabled person. In fact, these
vulnerable households receive 83% of all SNAPbenefits.Question #2 -- What is the accuracy
rate, correct payment only to eligibleparticipants of SNAP? Answer #2 -- 96%.Wait, I thought SNAP was riddled with waste, fraud and abuse! The facts don't support thiscommon allegation. SNAP has one of thehighest accuracy rates of any federal programs. And this error number includes benefitunderpayment as well as overpayment.
Question #3 -- What is the averageSNAP benefit per person, per meal?Answer #3 -- $1.50. Think about how difficultit must be to buy a healthy nutritious meal for$1.50.
Question #4 -- How many months canable-bodied adults without dependents (so-called ABAWDs) receive SNAP benefits withina 3-year period? Answer #4 -- 3 months. Acommon misconception is that SNAPrecipients are healthy adults who could be outworking but choose not to. The reality is thereare strict time limits for able-bodied-adults.The program is designed to provide temporaryrelief in times of need and help individuals andfamilies get back on their feet.
Question #5 -- Starting November 1, afamily of three will see their monthly SNAPautomatically decrease by what amount?Answer #5 -- About $20 to $25 per month. Inresponse to the 2008 financial crisis, the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Acts(ARRA) temporarily increased SNAP benefits.Struggling families will already see a benefitreduction starting November 1, and any newcuts in the Farm Bill will put an additionalburden on struggling families.
Next month, on September 15 to bespecific, the Outreach Ministry will sponsorour annual Offering of Letters. This will becoordinated by Julie and Ben Stuart. At that
time, you'll have an opportunity to write toyour Representative in Congress and toCalifornia's two Senators about the issue ofhunger. If you want to "get a head start" onbeing an advocate on hunger issues, you maywant to make sure those who represent you inthe House and the Senate are aware of thesefacts about the SNAP program before they voteto cut this program that provides food forfamilies struggling with hunger.
Again the source of this quiz and itsanswers is Feeding America, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit recognized by the IRS. You may Googlethem to learn more about them.
