The lightweight motorsport wiring har-

A NEW ERA BEGINS

The C7 GT3-R is powered by the proven

6.2L V8 aluminum small block engine. The

power of the engine is transferred via a

carbon prop shaft into a bespoke Xtrac

transverse sequential transaxle. The alumi-

num chassis and safety cage surpasses the

latest FIA safety requirements. The driver

side door features a built-in crash structure

for maximum side impact protection.

The new C7 GT3-R replaces its ultra-

successful predecessor, the Z06 R GT3,

introduced in 2006.

ABOUT C7 GT3/R

comments Woehr. “For example, we have used Xtrac and Megaline for the gearbox, Pankl for the Carbon driveshaft, and CP Autosport for the hubs, subframes, half shafts, Bosch for the Car electronic , etc.” Once the car’s data has been finalized, the molds were machined and the plastic and carbon compo-nents were constructed on-site. “The aero package was designed by two engineers from Aachen University. Their experience was fol-lowed by computer calculations and simulations. We are very happy with the functionality of the package, which was proved during initial testing and the FIA BoP test. Despite using a smaller Wing and and no additional Winglets in front, as most other cars, we were able to achieve the FIA dictated Aero Numbers which resulted in good efficiency numbers in terms of downforce versus drag.Much like the exterior, very little remains of the pro-duction car’s suspension, “The only OEM parts on the Suspension are the lower control arms, because they are beautiful hollow alu-castings,” adds Woehr.Building on the C7 road car’s all-new aluminum ‘Ome-ga’ platform, which offers inherent improved strength over the C6-generation, is a Heigo supplied roll cage that took inspiration from the previous Callaway Cor-vette. “The FIA spec roll cage is designed in-house, incorpo-rates the 2nd Generation driver side impact structure and we have it built by Heigo in Würzburg. It is close to the Z06.R design, as we have had such good experi-ences driving those cars for over 10 years, and we still have some of the old chassis running today. We have a customer in Denmark who is still winning races with

the second built chassis, back from 2006.”Powering the C7 GT3-R is the LS9-based V8 from the Z06R. Built by the Netherlands APP Racing. Largely carried over between generations, one of the biggest changes between the iterations is the routing of the exhaust system. The latest C7 GT3-R moves away from the road car’s iconic rear-facing four exit system, to a dual side exit.“We have never run a side exhaust before, so we did quite a lot of dyno development running a non-resonated pipe for the first time,”statesWoehr. “We achieved surprisingly good power numbers, and the sound was better than expected!Once the car was constructed, it was then subjec-ted to a comprehensive testing schedule. “The pro-jected goal was to show and run the car in Septem-ber 2015 at the FIA Balance of Performance Test in Ladoux, France,” concludes Woehr. “We managed to have the first roll-out of the car in August 2015. In September 2015 we successfully passed the FIA’s BoP test on our first shot. “We have to admit that we were very pleased with the performance and reliability out-of-the-box. There could pro-bably not be a better testament for the achieved as to be immediately in the race for the ADAC GT Masters Championship, which is probably the most competitive one in GT3 racing today.

The Z06.R’s replacement, the C7 GT3-R, was intro-duced at the start of the 2016 competition year and has already made an impact in the ADAC GT Masters series – the new car won on only its second outing.“We wanted to start the program in 2013, but were held up by the GT convergence discussions of the FIA in which they wanted to have GTE and GT3 cars starting from the same basis, with just different power levels and aero configurations,” explains Ernst Woehr, general manager, Callaway Competition. “When those discussions were finally put aside by the FIA and it was clear that the proposed format wouldn’t happen in the near future, we restarted the program and be-gan planning in later summer 2014.” When development of the car began, it was a CAD intensive process. Designed by Callaway’s primary designer, Paul Deutschman, the car’s exterior has been completely reimaged, gaining almost 200mm in width and 100mm in overall length. Each surface has been aerodynamically optimized, with a strong focus on generating downforce , optimized cooling and air extraction. The C7 GT3’s new exterior skin has also seen a switch in materials – from the road car’s revolutionary TCA Ultra Lite composite plastic panels to carbon-fiber. “The only original body panel on the car is the rear upper part of the bumper. Our panels are lighter than the originals, and built to a spec we have honed after 20 years of experience in lightweight body panels.” Technical director, Mike Gramke, designed all of the C7R’s technical components, while overseeing the complete car design. “We simply selected the best-known vendors for each of the components,”

How much does a C7 GT3-R cost?A new car does cost 430000 € (ex Leingarten, excl. VAT). Please contact Callaway Competition for the terms of pay-ment. Used cars available on request.

•••How long is the delivery time for a new C7 GT3-R?Race cars are built to order in 12 weeks. The delivery fulfill-ment is component supplier dependent.

•••Can I choose the color of the car?The C7 GT3-R will be delivered in natural carbon finish. On request, the car can be vinyl wrapped in any color or design.

•••I´m planning to run endurance races. Do I need a special endurance package for it?No, all parts on the car are endurance spec. The only package you need is the additional headlights for night races.

What does the price for the car include?• Documentation, Manuals• Training for your Mechanics, Engineers• Track Support for your first 2 Events or test sessions.

The Support will be FOC (but we might need to discuss the travel cost depending on the location)

•••Can we buy spare parts on the track?We will not be able to send a parts truck to every series. We will need to discuss your individual needs and find a solu-tion.
