Appalachian Outreach Staff To the Congregation of First Baptist Church, Jefferson City,

On behalf of the faculty, staff, students, and trustees of Carson-Newman Uni-versity, we humbly thank you for your generous and loyal giving to the Car-son-Newman Fund and Appalachian Outreach/Samaritan House. It is im-portant to us that our friends and fellow Christians support our mission to help our students reach their full potential as educated citizens and world wide serv-ant leaders. Through world class edu-cation and various mission opportuni-ties, C-N students are allowed to grow in Christ’s service. Your contributions make this happen. Bless each of you and may you find peace in knowing your gifts are transforming lives.

With Gratitude, Bob Gay (‘72) Trustee Carson-Newman University

June 1, 2017

To the people of First Baptist Church, Jefferson City:

Grace and peace to you from San Antonio! My family and I are eager to meet all of you and discern together God’s will for the future of First Baptist Church.

When I was growing up, my family moved fre-quently, but church was always a familiar home. I did all the typical things – G.A.s and Acteens, Bible Drill, chil-dren’s and youth choirs, and youth group. I sang solos, visited nursing homes, and helped in the nursery. While at Mississippi College, I was a leader in our Baptist Student Union, and it was there that I began to sense a call to ministry.

After graduation, I spent three years working in arts administration, then attended Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary. I learned there that I have the heart of a pastor, no matter what role I might play within a congregation. I have served churches in a variety of ways, including working with youth and children, providing pastoral care to sen-ior adults, and leading music and education ministries. My eight years of staff ministry at Woodland Baptist Church have shaped me, challenged me, and made me ready to become a senior pastor.

From the moment I saw your website last fall, I have felt drawn to your congregation. For many years, you have been a safe harbor for women in ministry. For the last two years, I have helped to develop Texas Baptist Women in Ministry, an organization that aims to affirm, connect, inspire, and advocate for women in all types of ministry settings. I was privileged to serve as the founding board chair, and I am passionate about listening to the stories of young women and encouraging them to listen for the voice of God in their vocational discernment. That leadership has also given me op-portunities to speak, teach, and write, and to be involved in the work of the national Baptist Women in Ministry organization.

My husband and I have been married for 18 years, and we are the parents of two great kids. Tony is a licensed Realtor and has extensive experience in home design and homebuilding. Our 14-year-old daughter, Gemma, is an active Girl Scout and artist, and our 12-year-old son, Luca, plays the violin and video games with equal enthusiasm. In addition to my vocational min-istry, I love reading and choral singing, and I am a passable knitter. We are praying that Jefferson City will be a new and happy home for us.

When I think about coming to First Baptist Church, I am inspired by your commitment to missions, both within your community and alongside global missions partners. I am excited by your relationship with Carson-Newman University, which reminds me of my own happy years at Mississippi Col-lege. And I am encouraged by the way you have weathered a lengthy tran-sition without faltering. First Baptist is a church home you can be proud of.

To be invited to preach in view of a call to become your pastor is an honor, and I look forward to getting to know you all better in the coming days.

With gratitude,

Ellen Di Giosia All new books are displayed in the window, labeled NEW.
