Allan reminded us that the key to a loving relationship is to heed God’s call rather than follow the call of one’s ego. God wants us to be fruitful. Ego demands that we become achievers. He said that the very first commandment given by God after creating man and woman is to “…be fertile and multiply…” (Genesis 1:28). This means “be fruitful.” This implies that we are God’s co-workers in establishing a loving relationship. This means that we are to participate and cooperate with the creative activity of our creator. Since our relationship is based entirely on our union with Jesus, our relationship becomes a sacred place in which God is allowed to be present and active. Hence, fruitfulness in God cannot be measured. It remains inaccessible and hidden and is known only to God. There is room for mystery to which we surrender. A loving relationship works through our trust in the Lord, keeping faith that God knows what we need. Fr. Allan reminded us that the keyto a loving relationship is to heed God’scall rather than follow the call of one’sego. God wants us to be fruitful. Egodemands that we become achievers. Hesaid that the very first commandmentgiven by God after creating man andwoman is to “…be fertile andmultiply…” (Genesis 1:28). Ego pushes us in making other people wrong.Beautiful relationships are destroyed when westick to our need to be right.

4. Let go of our need to be superior.True nobility is not about being better thansomeone else. It is about being better than weused to be.

5. Let go of our need to have more. The mantra of the ego is more – materially. Itis never satisfied. When we stop wanting more, more of what we need seem to arrive in ourlives. When we stop needing more for our ego,we become more in need of God.

6. Let go of identifying ourselves on the basis ofour achievements.God is the source of all our achievements. Wedon’t own them. We are mere stewards.

7. Let go of our reputation. Our reputation is not located in us. It resides in the mindsof others. Therefore, we have no control over it at all.If we interact with 30 people, we will have 30 reputations.

Our ego is an obstacle to having a loving relationship.Heeding God’s call for fruitfulness allows us to be in a constantspirit of gratuity, strengthening the bond God instituted in us.

Wealth as CrossSunday Homily - Sept. 13, 2009

Ruben M. Tanseco, SJ

“Whoever wishes to come afterme must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes tosave his life will lose it, but whoever loseshis life for my sake and that of the gospelwill save it.” (From today’s Gospelreading, Mk. 8: 27-35).

This formula for oneness with Christwas not only preached and taught to us,his disciples. Christ showed us the way byliving it himself. And all of it was done forthe love of God and one’s neighbor.

There are many ways of “taking upone’s cross” for the love of God andone’s neighbor. The sacrificing of one’sself one’s time, talents, and treasures forthe sake of love and justice is the onlymeaning of human life, according toGod’s designs. Sacrificing one’s self for

the sake of the common good is whatwe urgently need in our country today. One such inspiring example is the personof Sen. Mar Roxas. At the height ofpreparing for the 2010 elections as apresidential candidate, including a seriesof “infomercials,” he humbly gave wayto Sen. Noynoy Aquino for the sake of unityand the common good of our country. Inhis own words, addressed to all of us:

“Ito na ang pinakamabigat nadesisyon sa buhay ko. Maniwala mankayo o hindi, ginawa ko ito para sa bayan, para sa inyo… Mahal na mahal ko pokayo. Mahal na mahal ko po ang atingbayan. Hindi rin tayo maghihiwalay.Itutuloy natin ang pagbabago sa atingbansa. Itutuloy natin ang laban para sareporma… Kay Noy, at sa aking mgakababayan: Country above self! Bayanbago sarili. Hindi ko kayo pababayaan!Lalaban tayo!” He will fearlessly workfor “clean, honest, selfless public service.”

Call it sheer coincidence or whatever, but some days before this decision of Sen.Mar Roxas, Forbes magazine came outwith a list of the 40 richest persons in

our country, many of whom are well-known taipans and tycoons who evenbecame richer this past year. In the caseof quite a number of them, the HOW theyaccumulate their riches and the HOW theyuse these riches are morally questionable.

For instance, I am told that in the caseof a well-known chain of malls, many ofthe employees are hired as casuals, andafter five or six months, they are dismissedand new casuals are hired. By notpromoting them to be regular employees, the mall owners keep on hiring casualsevery five or six months, thus saving thosesuper-wealthy mall owners fromincreasing their salaries as regularemployees, and giving them the usualbenefits as required by law.

God’s mission for the rich is to bestewards of their riches, which ultimatelybelong to God in the first place. Thus, riches are to be used for the benefit of all, according to the God-given law of socialjustice, which is no less than love ofneighbor. The rich must discern how todeny themselves, take up their crosses, and follow Christ. In other words: Wealthand riches are a cross to be carried forthe sake of those who need those wealthand riches even more – the poor, theunderprivileged, the underpaid, the casualworkers who need to be regularemployees, and others. Following today’sGospel teaching, the rich and wealthyhave a far greater cross to carry, if theyreally want to be disciples of Christ andreach eternal peace with the Lord at theend of their lives. To be blessed with richesis indeed a privilege and at the same timea tremendous responsibility.

“How hard it is for those who havewealth to enter the kingdom of God! Forit is easier for a camel to pass through theeye of a needle than for a rich person to

enter the kingdom of God.” (Lk. 18: 24-25). But with an all-compassionate andforgiving God, it is not only possible toreach God’s kingdom, it is doable. Aconversion of heart is the answer.

A very timely bill was recentlyproposed in Congress by Rep. RisaHontiveros-Baraquel. It is entitled “An Actto Strengthen Security of Tenure andPromoting Regular Employment and forthat Purpose, Amending CertainProvisions of Presidential Decree No.442.” The explanatory note says that “thepresent proposal recognizessubcontracting as a valid businesspractice but also protects workers fromunscrupulous and unnecessarysubcontracting. Hence, it balanceslegitimate business interests with the needto protect workers from insecureemployment conditions.”

Furthermore, amendments to theLabor Code are part of the proposed bill, and “seeks to balance the legitimatebusiness interests of the employer withthe need for protection of workers fromthe prejudice of non-regularization. Afterall, for as long as the employer profitsthrough and by the labor of employees, itis but fair to recognize the workers’ rightto remain employed absent any legal causefor his dismissal.”

Let us pray for the approval of this billby our Congressmen, Senators, and ourPresident, especially those among them whoare themselves wealthy. Amen.

“It is necessary to state once morethe characteristic principle of Christiansocial doctrine: The goods of this worldare originally meant for all” (from PopeJohn Paul II, Encyclical on SocialConcerns).

Call to ServeEDITORIAL

Guess who were stranded inAteneo last Saturday, September 26?Eve Bañez, Tony and Aida del Rosario,Daisy de Guzman, Roxanne Espiritu,Bambi Narciso, Jun and Mila Sison,Maricel Suarez, and Monchito andTina Mossesgeld. Also there werePinky Narciso-Medina (sister of Tony)and Erika and April, two assistantsfrom Ventures Philippines, Inc. Jun andMila were able to go throughKatipunan in the early afternoon whileRoxanne was rescued by her nephewat around 8 p.m. The rest stayedovernight at Loyola House courtesy ofFr. Ruben and the Jesuits’ hospitality.Bro. Noel Elorde, SJ escorted thegroup to their rooms and made surethey had beddings and towels.

Why were they there at theheight of typhoon Ondoy? To findways, through a one-day seminarconducted by Pinky, to sustain fundingin the long term for Magis Deo’soperations. We are confronted with thereality that Magis Deo cannot supportitself and its projects and programsfrom membership dues and loveofferings. (Only 47% of members/BCGGs are updated in payingmembership dues). Assuming all of uspay our membership dues and loveofferings on time, we will still not haveenough to cover the escalating cost ofconducting an M.E. Weekend and thenumerous outreach programs andactivities we are invited to give.

Finance, i.e., how to fund theprograms on a continuing, sustainedbasis, is one of the major concerns ofleaders at the Pastoral Council level. This concern is shared by the FinanceCommittee, the ad hoc Fund RaisingCommittee and the CommunityServices Ministry Heads. It is achallenge for all the other ministriesto streamline their activities and make

them sustainable. On the other hand,we also need to deepen the spiritualityof our members so that their way oflife and their relationships in theirmarriage, in the family, in business, inthe larger community, especially theless fortunate and marginalized, and inpolitics are truly Christian and livedaccording to the inspiration of St.Ignatius of Loyola’s spirituality. Thus, designing programs and activities thatare self-supporting as well as effectivein forming our members is a balancingact for all ministries with the guidanceof the incoming Pastoral Council for2010.

The outgoing members of thePastoral Council, Tony and Aida delRosario, Reggie and Daisy de Guzman,Joey and Maricel Suarez, andMonchito and Tina Mossesgeld will bereplaced in the coming PastoralCouncil elections on November 28,2009. The replacement of half of thecouncil members every two years isone of the practices that makes MagisDeo unique. Unlike other communities, leadership in Magis Deo does notreside in one person or couple nor is itfor life. However, this means that allthose who are eligible to lead must beready and available when called uponto serve through appointments orelections.

For all members who are calledto serve more, having met the eligibilityrequirements set for the PastoralCouncil - this is the time for moreintense prayer, for the grace ofauthentic humility, acknowledging thatall that you have come from God. Allis gift. This is a special time to askGod how you can respond more to Hisgreat love. This is the time to chooseto submit to be elected if it is so willedby the Holy Spirit.

For all those who are eligible tovote, this is also the time for intenseprayer as we ask for guidance fromthe Holy Spirit to choose the newmembers of the Pastoral Council giventhe two-pronged concerns of theCommunity. We need to discern whoamong the eligibles have the deepaffection for the Magis DeoCommunity, the selfless desire to steerMagis Deo to greater depth information, service and praxis, thesteadfast valor to face obstacles andovercome frustrations, the unshakenpersistence to continue despiteseeming indifference, and mostimportantly, the uplifting lightness ofheart to celebrate successes andforgive shortcomings.

The qualities of a PastoralCouncil member seem overwhelmingbut as those who have served in theCouncil have experienced, God willnot take you where His love will notkeep you. With God’s grace andhuman effort, with the support offellow Council members, young and notso young Magis Deo members are ableto competently serve on the Councilas servant leaders, sharing theirwisdom, energy, and newperspectives.

Let us all pray that those who maybe called by God to serve in the councilmay be blessed with these graces: ahumble disposition to choose to bechosen, to seek the magis in theirservice in and through our community, and to trust that the Holy Spirit will dothe rest.

It is these same graces that weshould all constantly beg for ourselvesso that whenever God may call any ofus to service, we will generouslyrespond in gratitude.

You know God.Tell me,what is

God like?

Philip & Malu PanlilioVice Chaircouple / Mustard Seed

These words struck us asEva Galvey started thePrayer Deepening and

Introduction to Spiritual Directionsworkshop in August. What a beautifulway to start the shepherding seminar! It dawned on us that this partlyexplains why some of us are hesitantto respond to the call of shepherdingin our Community despite theapparent critical need.

We avoid this question. We avoidthinking that’s what people are askingof us when we are called to beshepherds. Why? Because of thetremendous responsibility it placesupon us. Tell me, not only by yourwords, but by who you are, by theway you look at me. Who is God?

This is the core of shepherding –being able to tell others what God islike in so many ways. It is beingourselves, bringing ourselves beforeothers just as how we are. And if weseek God in all things, we shall findGod by our side, and others will findGod through us.

Those of us who have committedto the call of shepherding can testifythat telling others what God is likecannot be as difficult as we fear it tobe. In fact, it can be as innate andrefreshing as fresh water flowing fromthe spring if only we seek and let God.In fact, shepherding can be life-givingin terms of the various images of Godshared by our lambs with us. Theseimages are so vivid and inspiring thatGod is so alive amongst us. What aprivilege to listen, see, smell, andtouch these images of God!

As we look back and reflect onour own personal shepherdingexperience, we started out not reallyprepared and with inadequateformation but only had a willingnessto share our search for God withothers. God was and is the onlymotivation. Everything else fell into itsplace whenever we invoke God’s helpin our ministry of shepherding. Whilethere were challenges to overcome, with God’s grace, anything can besurmounted.

We encourage you to include inyour prayers the invitation to shepherdin Magis Deo. Give it a thought, prayabout it, and allow God to lead you.Let not the practical side of life prevailfor God will provide. Our growingCommunity needs you as shepherds ifwe are to sustain our community lifetogether. We all have a stake in this.If only for our gratitude for what Godhas blessed us through Magis Deo,then it would really be easy to say“Yes, Lord! Here we are…”

On November 28, we will cometogether as a Community to choose the2010 Pastoral Council members whowill shepherd us. If you are called toserve in the Council, please pray aboutit and respond with generosity of heart.Let us all pray for the mission of MagisDeo, our personal contribution to itsachievement, and beg God for Hisgrace of courage to take on theshepherding challenge and His graceof fidelity to the values of the GoodShepherd. May God bless Magis Deowith His abundant love!

Last September 1, 2009, Fr. TedGonzales gave a talk on The Spiritualityof Shepherding to Magis Deo (currentand future) shepherds, ministry headsand pastoral council members atSanctuario de San Antonio, Makati. Inhis talk, Fr. Ted discussed the three P’sof shepherding, namely, “Pamumuno,”Pagsasabuhay” and “Pagtatawid.”

“Pamumuno” is leadership by self-mastery. We become better shepherdswhen we learn to embrace ourweaknesses, practice self-discipline andallow God to be in control of our lives.Self-mastery has three components:self-examination, self-regulation andself-growth. Fr. Ted offered a way toexamine oneself by asking ourselves thethree “F” questions:

1. What is my Flight mode? Inother words, what is my wayout? What are the things thatgive me instant pleasure orimmediate gratification? Whatare my addictions?

2. What is my Fight mode? Whenam I aggressive ordestructive? Do I have a needto dominate or to control?

3. What is my Fright mode? What are my fears? Do I fearfailure, rejection or poverty?

In self-examination, we constantlylook at and evaluate our lives. Wediscover and learn to accept ourweaknesses. Self-regulation involvesshepherding oneself. We need to learn

from our past mistakes. We need tolearn to balance our lives and priorities. We need to discipline ourselves. Self-regulation leads to self-growth. Whenwe learn to regulate, control and putorder in our lives, then we start to growand mature spiritually too.

“Pagsasabuhay” involveswitnessing what we believe in andradiating our faith. Fr. Ted quoted a fewlines from the Jesus Prayer by CardinalNewman to explain this concept of“Pagsasabuhay.”“Shine through me and be so in me

that every soul I come in contact withmay feel Your presence in my soul.Let them look up and see no longer

me, but only Jesus! The light, O Jesus, will be all from

You; none of it will be mine.It will be You, shining on others

through me.”Fr. Ted explained that people leave

the faith because their faith consists onlyof shallow rituals. Their faith does notbecome a way of life. Peoplereturn to faith when they seehow others live out their faith. In living our faith, we needto gather our trash and put itin the right place. What dowe recycle, re-use or throwaway? In living our faith, weembrace the Christian valuesin our lives. We put directionin our lives. “Pagsasabuhay”also involves embracing our

cross. When we embrace our cross, Godis with us and shines through us. It isHis light that radiates from us andinfluences the people around us. Thuswhen we shepherd, it is not us but Goddoing the shepherding. When we startto worry, we shift the focus from Godto ourselves. We take the work fromGod and do it ourselves. According toSt. Ignatius, the first requirement of ageneral is to be someone who is totallyunited with God. When we shepherd, webecome God’s generals so weconstantly have to strive to be totallyunited with God such that it is no longerus who shepherd but God whoshepherds through us.

“Pagtatawid” involves leading oursheep to greener pastures. Shepherdsteach others the way. They teach othersto cross the street. A shepherd, just likeany other leader, knows, shows and goesthe way. We have to ask ourselves wherewe are leading our people. Shepherdsshould be leading their sheep from the

destructive cycle of vice to a constructivecycle of virtue. As shepherds, we shouldlead our people from Flight to Light, fromFight to Life, and from Fright to RightLove. Just as in “Pamumuno,” we askedthe “F” questions; in “Pagtatawid,” weask the “L” questions both for ourselvesand for our lambs:

1. From Flight to LightWhat is the reality I need toaccept? What do I need to let go?

What are the greater values ofmy life?

2. From Fight to LifeWhat is the truly life-giving orhealthy lifestyle for me?What will raise my dignity orreverence for my life? What will balance my life or myrhythm of life?

3. From Fright to Right LoveWhat right relationships orfaithful relationships do I needto create or sustain?

Who do I need to work with forthe common good? How do I restore the dignity ofthe lost, the least and the last?

In summary, Fr. Ted taught us howto look at shepherding from theperspective of the three P’s:“Pamumuno,” leadership by selfmastery; “Pagsasabuhay,” witnessingand radiating our faith; and“Pagtatawid,” leading our sheep towardsLight, Life and Right Love.

WHEW! What can be more suitable as the title forCouples’ Night than A September to Remember? Veryappropriate, don’t you agree? For how can you dispute thefact that RJ Bar was a-rocking that night of September 19!A promised delivered, I must say.

Even before the opening prayer of Tony and Aida del Rosariowas delivered, the Paparazzi Band provided nostalgic music thatput the jampacked crowd in the mood for a night of their lives.

Okay, before we miss out on any important detail, here’show the night went. The Magis faithful started trickling in asearly as 6 pm and by 7 pm theplace was filled to the brim. Theorganizers had to advance theprogram since the house wasalready full before the 8 pmscheduled start. The deliciousdinner was served promptly andorderly, thanks to the crew ofRJ Bar.

Most of Magis who’s whocame in black and/or white attire, a fitting tribute to the lateKing of Pop Michael Jackson, for whom the theme wasconceptualized (a brainchild of Leony Parada). And who cantop the attire of M.E. 95 led by Tony and Bambi Narciso? The whole class came as angels and demons complete withhalos and lighted horns. Halloween came early, huh? Forthat, they won hands down the best attired group category.Congrats, guys.

Surprise and superb performances came one afteranother, and were applauded generously. Mike Magpayo didstand up comedy ala Jay Leno that elicited laughter from thecrowd. The Magis Beatles composed of Leony Parada, EliPrieto, Apin Llamas and yours truly rendered a couple ofMichael Jackson hits: I’ll Be There and Billie Jean. LeonyParada’s dance number brought the house down. And since

the crowd shouted for more, yours truly sang Words by theBee Gees for our encore. Lovely audience.

A number of raffle prizes were won by about a dozenlucky winners; the top prize of an overnight stay for two at a5-star resort at Laguna was won by, who else but Tony delRosario! Why am I not surprised? As I’ve always maintained, good people are blessed.

Just when you thought you’ve had enough, the country’snumber one retro band, the 8-Track Band, provided the fittingclimax to a night no one wanted to end. Grabe, I tell you. This

fantastic band led by LindaSantos’ brother Larry Mallari, rocked the whole place with narya soul not dancing to theirnumbers, and with gusto at that! The dance floor was not enoughfor the revelers; many had tomake do and dance right on theirseats. This band where ClaroSantos is the lead guitarist is trulyawesome.

Four members joined the sing-a-long portion of the 8-Track Band. Three belles graced us with their smooth andsoothing voices. But Steve Vistan of M.E. 98 shepherded byJun and Mila Sison grabbed the limelight. His rendition ofTom Jones’ Delilah left the house shouting for more.

Credits should go to the Community Service Ministrychaired by Miles and Evelyn San Pedro for an outstandinglabor of love. Kudos to the event chair couple Apin and ChieLlamas.

This A September to Remember affair is surely anevent that will be very hard to forget, believe you me. Aguaranteed talk of the town.

On behalf of the Community Service Ministry we extendour heartfelt and sincerest thanks to all the donors, supporters, performers and members of Magis Deo Community. Till weserve again.

EverydayPeople

No, this isn’t about the late 60’shit of Sly & the Family Stone. But yes,it is about the chores of everydaypeople.

Fresh from the feast tendered byJun & Mila Sison, the Central SectorBCGGs immediately flexed theirmuscles by conducting the second ofthe five-week ten-module seminar atPateros parish church for their outreachprogram on values formation.

Spearheaded by Mila Sison, speakers Leony Parada (withsupportive wife Mia) and Henry Cruzdelivered apt talks on Kalinisan andKaayusan in their homes and in theircommunity. The auditorium was packedwith 54 attendees from our Suyuangroup. The group discussions werelivelier than the last. Speaks well for thespeakers, don’t you agree? Completewith PowerPoint presentations andvarious paraphernalia, the attendeesactively participated in all of theexercises.

All were filled with a fresh outlookof our everyday routines. Chores thatwe normally take for granted were givena new and deeper meaning that willsurely make a positive difference in ourdaily lives. And who to better talk aboutthe subjects than Leony and Henry?Muchas gracias, amigos.

Apin Llamas kept everyonerefreshed with his drinks while Arnel &Bernie Isip filled us with delicious breadfrom Pantoja. Regie and Daisy deGuzman tended the registration. Rolandand Bel Tiongson came with their cutedaughter Tricia and Anton (yes, he’s thechubby and lovable one). Ramie & MimiSantos, Rey & Nitz Eslava, Cesar &Delsa Sanggalan, Pam Narciso, Marilynand yours truly provided the moralsupport.

A blessed Sunday morning ofAugust 30, 2009 was once again well-spent and offered to our Lord by theconsolidated and united efforts of theCentral Sector BCGGs. Indeed a showof force dedicated to God.

Zarah Gagatiga, Mt. Olivet BCGG

When our shepherd couple Ed andSol Macalalad informed our BCGG earlythis year that we would soon have ourfirst interface with another BCGG, I wasexcited. The natural extrovert, I lookedforward to meeting people, to knowingnew faces and enriching my social life.It meant new friends and it offeredpossibilities. I saw it as an opportunityto learn, and eventually grow, from themany life stories that other coupleswould be sharing.

My husband Domeng, on the otherhand, feebly welcomed the thought ofsuch an encounter. He is the shy one,you see. But, there we were on our firstinterface with Emmanuel, listening andsharing, bearing light and tasting the salt.A month later, the Ebardos, along withthe rest of the BCGG Philippians, welcomed us in their cozy home inBicutan.

So far, the interface has been apleasant and meaningful experience forDomeng and me. In fact, we bothmarveled at the steadfast faith of theelder couples in Emmanuel andPhilippians. We stayed up all nighttalking about our impressions on theirlife-affirming journeys. Theirs was nota tell-all tale alá talk show extravaganza. In bits and pieces, we figured out howfaith and hope work in the lives of

people; that suffering is an act of love;that in moments of one’s fragility, onecan see the loving face of God. Theirtestimonies were edifying.

Here we are at the early stages ofour married life, going through hills andvalleys, groping our way in darkly litpaths and falling more than once in mudpits, complaining about and regrettingpast mistakes that can never be takenback. Our elders, meanwhile, have so

much to be grateful for having enduredthe trying moments in their marriage andfamily life. Surely, if they can survive,we will too in God’s love and mercy.

Another insight I gathered from theinterface that touched me so was therealization that Domeng and I willforever be parents. Our kids may growand leave the nest, but wherever theyare and whatever they may become, weremain their mother and father.Eventually we will let go of Nico and

IlluminaIlluminaIlluminaIlluminaIlluminatingtingtingtingtingInterfInterfInterfInterfInterfacesacesacesacesaces

Zoe. When the time comes, it will hurtand it will give us many sleepless nightsthinking about their welfare and well-being. We will merely hold on tomemories of their childhood, remembering the joys and pains ofrearing them into responsible and God-fearing citizens. When the time comes, however, that they need our help, wewill do our duty as parents no matterwhat.

The bond is strong at the level ofour own BCGG. And yes, we will remainloyal to it. I suppose it is the same withthe others. Yet, there is a biggercommunity in Magis Deo to break breadwith. Only when we break can we letour light shine, we truly become couplesfor others. Domeng and I are blessed tohave seen the light in other BCGGcouples of the community.

It’s about time we lift the coveringof our lamps.

Do not kiss your children so theywill kiss you back, but so theywill kiss their children, and theirchildren’s children.

If we don’t pay attention we pay later.

Most of us are the load we are carrying.

Life has depths which only time explores.

Life and DeathIn 1985, I joined the Volunteers for

Cory during the late President CorazonAquino’s run for the presidency. In 1986,I was present in 4 big rallies for Tita Coryat the Luneta. I am a big and die-hardCory fan. My eldest daughter has apicture when she was just a few monthsold in February 1986 with a yellow bandon her head. I have my picture wearing ayellow shirt in our company magazinewith me holding an M-16 armalite riflewith my brother and 3 soldiers besideme in one of those huge Luneta rallies. When we couldn’t find some popularpersonality at one rally, I chased SubasHerrero, a not-so-popular TV personalityat that time, for a picture. Per Tita Cory’surging, I was one of many who boycottedcompanies and establishments whosupported the late dictator. I rode in acar with my brothers and toured MetroManila, blowing our horns and flashingthe Laban sign during the night whennews spread that the dictator had fledthe country. I collected paraphernaliaincluding a piece of chicken wiresupposedly cut from the Mendiola orMalacañang barricade. I did my share. And, I followed through Cory’s life evenafter she left the office.

_______________

At President Cory Aquino’s funeral,we, in the family, all cried with the Aquinofamily and with the nation who mournedher death. I came home after working inthe morning, so I could also give time tomourn and watch the proceedings andeven participate. We wanted to besomewhat realistic about our involvementand waited for the cortege to pass bySucat Road. A few minutes before it wasscheduled to pass by, I left home withmy 2 daughters for Sucat. As the cortegepassed by, I flashed the Laban sign alongwith hundreds of other people who didthe same and continued to do so as theAquino family and others in severalbuses passed by. My daughter Fiona, who tagged along with me closely as wewaved ourselves in the crowd asked me,“Why are you flashing the loser sign? So, I quickly explained that it is not the

loser sign. With Cory, it is the “laban” (orthe “fight”) sign.

Two Deaths, a Funeral and a Movie. That’s not the title of a new movie. That’san experience I went through in quicksuccession. In a span of 3 consecutiveweeks, I was in the wake of 29-year oldGerald Raymundo, one of our employeeson one week, and in the wake of 26-yearold Earl Torres, the son of a friend, thefollowing week. Then, again the followingweek, I was in the wake and eventuallyat the funeral of my uncle, who I call PapaYayong, my dad’s younger brother. Bothyoung guys died of brain tumor and/orbrain cancer, suspected to be both diet-related. I know nothing about the kind ofpeople these two young guys were.Papa Yayong was 78 and died ofcomplications from a heart problem. Hewas a generous and a very spiritualperson.

_______________

A few days after my uncle’s death,I reflected on my last conversation withhim and his acceptance of his imminentdeath, his simple acceptance of theLord’s invitation. Two days after his 78th

birthday in August, my family and I visitedhim and brought food to somehowcelebrate his birthday and to cheer himup. In a very short conversation, he askedme what the age of my dad was whenhe died. When I told him my dad was78, he replied curtly, “I am 78.” Threeweeks later, he died.

_______________

I reminisced on my uncle’sgenerosity and how he helped my brotherfinancially during his seminary days. Ithought that our l ives would bemeasured, among others, by the way wetake care of our families and how we bringup our children. Surely, my Papa Yayonghas lived up to God’s measurement inthis area and has passed with flyingcolors. Papa Yayong’s death has givenme the opportunity to reflect and to reviewmy own life. As when he was alive andproductive, he did me and my family a

favor. Even in death, he is doing me afavor. I thank God for giving me and myfamily Papa Yayong, an example ofgenerosity, spirituality and fatherhood. Ithank Papa Yayong for having touchedmy life and allowed me to try to bring myown life to the same fullness that hehimself lived.

_______________

On the same day I attended thefuneral of my uncle, I watched the movie“Taking Chance” at home. “TakingChance” is a true story about theexperience of a US marine colonelescorting the body of Marine Pfc. ChancePhelps. Phelps was a Private First Classin the United States Marine Corps whowas killed in Iraq as the convoy he wasescorting came under heavy fire. Despitebeing wounded, he refused to beevacuated, and instead manned hisM240 machine gun to cover theevacuation of the rest of his convoy. Uponwithdrawal, he sustained his fatal woundto the head. His remains were escortedhome by Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, whoseaccounts of the escort were recorded inan article he wrote entitled “TakingChance.” Phelps was 19 years old.

_______________

In all these experiences related todeath, somehow, I had an appreciationof my own lack of preparedness andpossibly my having not lived enough andfully. I am sure Gerald and Earl did welland served their purpose as breadwinnersand being a good son and brother whenthey were alive. Chance Phelps savedlives and sacrificed his life. My unclebrought up a daughter and 3 sons, whoare now good citizens and goodChristians, while also helping otherpeople.

Clyde D. Abapo, Jeremiah BCGGSCENES AND SIGNS OF FAITH

Models of Faith

I’ve had close friendships and sharedexperiences with people, especially inmatters of faith. They are not perfectpersons, but their thoughts, actions, andways of life define their true character.Their faith in God is reassuring and asource of inspiration. Apart from mymother, who is now at peace with God,the rest of them I have not seen in years.

Dick Santos – He was the salesmanager of a tin can factory when I methim in the mid-seventies. Being an activemember of the Opus Dei, he invited meto a mass celebration in honor of itsfounder, after a factory visit of hiscompany. Along the way, he shared aboutthe size of his family and his strongopposition to birth control. “I follow God’swill. He knows when pregnancy stops,”he said. Half an hour into our trip to theChurch, his car suddenly stopped. Hetried to start the car several times, butthe engine still wouldn’t run. Then hechecked all the panel gauges and wentthrough all the wirings of the engine. Aftera few more minutes of silence and prayer, the car started and we were finally ableto attend the mass.

Tony Enriquez – We were groupmates in the subject Development ofEnterprise at the Ateneo Graduate

School. Being fellow Cebuanos, webecame friends. Our closeness wascompounded because we often see eachother at mass in the early afternoon, usually celebrated by Father Bo. Fifteenyears later in the mid-nineties, I met himat lunch upon his invitation. This time heoccupies the position of Vice-President,Asia Pacific Region, of San MiguelCorporation. In our conversation, Imentioned to him about the M.E.weekend. He welcomed the idea but his

busy schedule and constantmobility made it impossible. When we parted minutes before 1 PMhe said, “I don’t forget my prayers and Ihave good vibrations with the Lord.”

Boy Dulangon – Boy was myclassmate from first year to fifth yearwhen we graduated from our MechanicalEngineering course. We became closeto one another, not only because we bothbelonged to the top ten of the class, butbecause we have a common religiousbelief. I found him to have some wisdom

but not every man really lives.” Perhaps,an even more appropriate reminder forme was a label on my uncle’s coffin, which said, “In every act of love, you comeface to face with God. – St. Teresa.”

A kindergartner was practicingspelling with magnetic letters on therefrigerator: cat, dog, dad, and mom hadbeen proudly displayed for all to see.

One morning while getting ready forthe day, he bounded into the room with

his arms outstretched. In his hands werethree magnetic letters: G-O-D.

“Look what I spelled, Mom!” with aproud smile on his face.

“That’s wonderful!” his mom praisedhim. “Now go put them on the fridge soDad can see it when he gets hometonight.”

The mom happily thought that herson’s Catholic education was certainlyhaving an impact. Just then, a little voicecalled from the kitchen: “Mom, how doyou spell ‘zilla’?”

in his words of faith. “Ang atong ginoopareho lang sa atong amahan.Manggihatagon sa anak nga matarongug masunurun” (Our father in heaven issimilar to our human father. He easilygives in to a child’s request if he is goodand obedient). Although we saw eachother a couple of times after we bothpassed the board exam in 1969, nothingwas more meaningful than when we metagain during the college graduation atthe Ateneo de Manila University, where

both our daughters werehonor students.

Mar Sagarino – Hewas my high schoolclassmate. When wesaw each other afterthirty years, he was withthe Finance Departmentof San MiguelCorporation. I admire notonly his honesty, butalso his sharing of hisexpertise by heading thefinancial activities of theirparish. An activemember of Couples for

Christ, he is a good example of simplicity, sharing and service.

Mama Lucing – No other personon earth sowed the seed of faith in meas much as my mother. After hermenopausal stage, I came to realize hertransformation from a traditional Catholic-in-name person to that of a devotee, fullof spirit in serving the various activitiesof two churches, namely our San NicolasParish and the Basilica del Santo Niñode Cebu. I did not bother to ask her (Imust have been eleven or twelve yearsold at that time) but what I learned laterwas that she was suffering fromemotional imbalance and the cure wasprayers and unlimited service to Godthrough the Church. Through the yearsuntil her death, she went to the dailycommunion in mass if her healthallowed. She prayed the rosary everynight and every morning when she wokeup. Whatever success or achievement Ihad, I silently attribute it to myself (ego),but her words were comforting andinspiring. “Gilamdagan ka sa EspirituSanto” (You are being enlightened by theHoly Spirit).
