Special Article Collection of Fashion and Textiles on

“Sustainability and the Triple Bottom Line within the Global Clothing and Textiles

Industry”

The Fashion and Textiles journal is a research journal that aims to advance knowledge and to seek new perspectives to fashion and textiles worldwide through publication of high quality original research articles, review papers, editorials, case studies, book reviews and letters to the editor. The scope of the journal includes the following four technical research divisions: textiles science and technology, clothing science and technology, economics of clothing and textiles/fashion business, and fashion design and history. The journal is pleased to announce a call for papers for a special collection on the topic of sustainability and the triple bottom line in the global clothing and textiles industry to be co-edited by Kim Y. Hiller and Joy M. Kozar. The clothing and textiles industry accounts for approximately $2 trillion in global revenue. Unfortunately, the industry’s penchant for natural resource consumption and toxic chemical use poses remarkable threats to environmental sustainability. Additionally, labor issues within the production of clothing and textiles, including forced labour, child labour, low wages, excessive hours of work, discrimination, health and safety hazards, and lack of worker representation for negotiations with management also generate serious social and economic sustainability challenges. Fortunately, current industry activity responding to the sustainability challenges suggests a growing commitment to sustainable practices. So while the environmental, social, and economic consequences associated with clothing and textiles supply chain are serious, there are promising signs that a significant paradigm shift towards sustainability and a focus on the triple bottom line is beginning. The objectives of this special collection will be to advance knowledge related to current sustainability challenges within the global clothing and textiles supply chain and seek new perspectives on initiatives within the industry to advance sustainability and the triple bottom line. Articles submitted to the special collection can relate to sustainability within any aspect the supply chain (from design, to production, distribution, marketing consumption, and disposal). Topics for this special issue may include (but are not limited to) the following:

Historical perspectives on sustainability issues in the clothing and textiles industry

Theoretical explorations of sustainability and the triple bottom line

Labor issues within the clothing and textiles industry

Counterfeit clothing and textile products

Fiber and textile production and environmental impacts

Water issues within the clothing and textiles industry

Climate change and the clothing and textiles industry

Company codes of conduct, factory monitoring, and other socially responsible manufacturing strategies

Sustainability and consumer behavior

Environmental life cycle assessment

Social life cycle assessment

Environmentally preferable fibers and textiles

Sustainable economic growth and business models

Sustainable design strategies and paradigms

Environmental and social communication of sustainability claims

Sustainability indices Full papers are due December 1st, 2015. Papers are accepted only in English and formatted according to APA 6th edition. Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; 150 word abstract; 3 to 5 keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendixes (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual sheets); figure caption(s) (as a list).
