CALL FOR PAPERS MIND THE GAP: CROSSING BORDERS IN HERITAGE AND CONSERV ATION Carleton University Heritage Conservation Symposium Hosted by the School of Canadian Studies March 22, 2014 “Mind the Gap” is a one-day student-run symposium exploring the gaps between ‘heritage’ and ‘conservation’, as well as the challenges and potentials of multidisciplinary approaches to heritage conservation. The 2014 Heritage Conservation Symposium will engage students and professionals from a variety of fields in a dialogue that will address some of the gaps at the intersections of different conservation value systems, territorial borders and professional disciplines. POTENTIAL THEMES: 1. Territorial borders a. What are successful models for cross-border conservation? b. How do broader design and integration concepts develop? 2. Interdisciplinary borders a. What issues are emerging as disciplines define themselves? b. What is happening at the margins of these disciplines? 3. Language and culture a. How can we connect our languages and vocabularies? b. What stakeholders are left out of interdisciplinary dialogue? Alternate themes are accepted and encouraged! SUBMISSIONS Submissions are encouraged from heritage professionals as well as students working at the Masters and Doctoral levels from different disciplines. Submissions in French are welcomed: applicants can choose to present in either language but simultaneous interpretation will not be available. Please submit a 250-300 word abstract of proposed papers along with the working title, contact information and short CV (150 words) by December 31, 2013. Final papers should be a maximum of 2,000 words for a maximum 20-minute presentation. “Mind the Gap” is a one-day student-run symposium exploring the gaps between ‘heritage’ and ‘conservation’, as well as the challenges and potentials of multidisciplinary approaches to heritage conservation.
