Kalaboso para kay Villar“I know that mudslinging is

part of politics. I believe that thepeople can separate the truthfrom falsehoods.”

Minsan na ring nabanggit niSenate President Juan PonceEnrile na “at one point Villarearned P26 billion from thepublic listing of his real estatecompanies.”

Aba,

TODAY, February 3, 2010, I start my column “Magkaisa Parasa Bayan” (MPB) on this paper. In this regard, I would like tothank Mr. Victor A. Caluag, Ms. Tonette Henson and Mr. MannyB. Marinay and Jonathan P. Vicente, the President and CEO,EVP for Sales and Marketing and Editor-in-Chief and Manag-ing Editor, respectively, of Commuter Express, for giving me theopportunity to write on this publication.

It’s a great honor and privilege to be given the chance towrite a column on the favorite newspaper of LRT and MRTcommuters.

Let me start by introducingmyself.

I’m Atty. Jay C. De Castro, thethird of four children of Benito S.De Castro of Candon, Ilocos Surand Julieta P. Capistrano of Lopez,Quezon. I’m a product of the pub-lic school system. I attended pri-mary education at the F. BalagtasElementary School (1969) in Sta. Cruz, Manila and secondaryeducation at the Manila High School (1973). I finished my Bach-elor of Arts degree in Communication Arts at the University ofSanto Tomas (1978) and my Bachelor of Laws at the Far EasternUniversity (1985). I took my oath as an attorney in 1986.

I am an idealist. I dream of creating a safe, peaceful, just, healthyand prosperous society for our children and youth. I am an ad-vocate of justice, good government and people’s welfare.

My idealism and advocacy led me to write a book entitled“Aklas ng Malakas (Mamamayan Laban sa Karahasan atKasamaang Panlipunan), a book on ethics, values and charac-ter development, for the creation of a responsible and concernedcitizenry, needed in the establishment of the said society.

I’m a former director of the Philippine Coal Corporation, asubsidiary of the PNOC (Philippine National Oil Corporation)[2001] and the Metropolitan Waterworks & Sewerage System[MWSS] (2002 to 2009). My appointment with GOCCs exposedme to anomalous government transactions, which I questionedand opposed, to the dismay and consternation of the directorsand officers of the said corporations.

My advocacy for good government and determination to fightgraft and corruption, earned me an award from the VolunteersAgainst Crime and Corruption (VACC) as Anti-CorruptionAdvocate in Government Service in 2005.

I am active in the government and private sector ’s campaignagainst proliferation of illegal drugs in the country. I wroteseveral articles against narco-politics in the Philippines andserved as speaker against the infamous Tiangge ng Shabu saPasig, where I denounced the police and local officials whocoddle drug pushers and manufacturers.

Due to my campaign against corruption and illegal drugs,my family and I were subjected to harassments and intimida-tions. In May 2001, my house in Sta. Mesa, Manila was firedupon and my car burned by corrupt politicians.

I write a column in People’s Tonight, entitled “MagkaisaPara sa Bayan,” and host a radio program, also entitled“Magkaisa Para sa Bayan” (DZRJ, 810 Khz, Sunday 10:00 to11:00 AM and DWBL 1242 Khz MWF, 5:00 to 6:00 PM), where Ipromote the ideals and teachings of Aklat ng Malakas.

In July 2009, we registered an NGO named Magkaisa Para saBayan, Inc. (MPBI), a non-stock and non-profit organization, thepurpose of which is to unite our people to create a safe, peaceful, just, healthy and prosperous society, through the propagationand promotion of the visions, hopes, aspirations, goals, idealsand teachings of Aklat ng Malakas. MPBI has a website called,magkaisaparasabayan.com, where the e-copy of the book maybe read. The site also presents an AVP, entitled “Ang Kalagayanng Ating Bayan”, which depicts the true state of our nation.

In fine, our column here in CE is additional medium throughwhich we can propagate the ideals, goals, aspirations and teach-ings of Aklat ng Malakas.

In aspiring to create a safe, peaceful, just, healthy and prosper-ous society for our children and youth, we will write about thecancer that afflicts our country, graft and corruption, which, wesubmit is the root cause of the poverty and misery of our people.

Towards this end, we will assail the corrupt in our govern-ment, no matter what their positions may be. Those who per-form their duties with honesty and fidelity, however, will berecognized, praised and exalted.

Through the mercy of God, and if we as a people, will uniteand agree to reform ourselves, in accordance with the teach-ings of Aklat ng Malakas, I strongly believe that the ideal soci-ety, we dream to create for our children and youth, could beattained and established.

Reyes’ ties with the feared Ampatuans goas far as appointing UndersecretaryZamzamin Ampatuan at the Department ofEnergy (DOE).

RESPECTED University ofthe Philippines economist andtelevision host Winnie Monsodsaid the C-5 road project was“unnecessary and wasteful.”

In her column at the Inquirer,Monsod categorically said theC-5 road project benefitted Villar.

She said the governmentwasted P6.96-billion in pub-lic funds in the road exten-sion, which she stressed wasa “duplication of the earlierManila-Cavite Toll Express-way (MCTEP) project, linkingthe South Luzon Expressway

(SLEX) to the Coastal Road.”She said the P6.96-billion

C-5 extension, which togetherwith the Las Piñas-ParañaqueLink Project (LPPLP), alsolinks SLEX to Coastal Road ,was bankrolled by the gov-ernment.

"It was totally unnecessaryto build a second one. Therewas a waste of scarce re-sources," said Monsod.

According to Monsod, theC-5 extension passes throughat least 50-52 hectares ofVillar's property holdings,

whose values increase signifi-cantly with the constructionof the project.

In report by abs-cbnnews.com, the websitequoted Monsod as saying thatin acquiring right of way, “thegovernment paid P168.1 mil-lion or an average P7,168 persquare meter for Villar-relatedproperties compared to onlyP22 million or P1,880 per sqmfor non-Villar properties.”

Villar has repeatedly de-nied he earned megabucks fromthe project.

Robert Lim Joseph, chair-man emeritus of the NationalAssociation of IndependentTravel Agencies (NAITAS),said the Asean open skiesagreement provides for recip-rocal rights and is fair and

equitable.However, vigilance must

be exercised at all times so thatthe agreement is implementedstrictly only within the regionand is not circumvented andabused, Joseph stressed.

“We must be very carefulwith the interpretation of theagreement,” said the manconsidered the foremost ad-vocate of fair skies in the in-dustry.

He said that this is because

some Asean companies likeSingapore Airlines remainsinterested in using the openskies agreement in flying todestinations beyond or out-side the region.

Joseph said the Aseanopen skies should only al-low Singapore Airlines, forexample, to fly from its homecountry to the Philippinesand to Thailand or Malay-sia and back to its originalport.

“RELUCTANT readers are just kidswho have so many entertainment options– the Internet, television, video games –they don’t see the values of reading,” saysJeff Kinney, author of the best-sellingnovel cartoon series “Diary of a WimpyKid” now a motion picture being filmedby 20th Century Fox that will open in Phil.theaters come April 3.

The book slowly made its way to beingin the best-seller list that started at No.391 last April 2007 and steadily crept itsway up. The book benefited much fromthe word-of-mouth recommendations thatby the end of August 2007, Wimpy kidjumped to No. 81.

By the time Kinney released his secondWimpy book entitled “Rodrick Rules,” ithurled onto be No. 7 in the best seller listof which he shared the year’s (2008) top25 best selling authors including BarackObama and Stephanie Meyer (“Twilight”series).

The books have been translated into 28languages such that the language barrierhad been broken for most parts of the

world turning non-readers to avidbookworms overnight. Having climbedonto the bestseller list, the book was notspared from criticisms as well. ButKinney explains, “Greg isn’t a characterto be emulated. But I think the kids getthat. They’re more sophisticated than wethink. They laugh at Bart Simpson, butthey know they’re not supposed to be likeBart Simpson.”

“Greg is like Holden Caulfield (charac-ter from J.D. Salinger’s “Catcher in theRye”), what he doesn’t like in others he’sguilty of himself. Kids recognize that. And when you identify with something, you can rise above it. I’ve also usedwords I wouldn’t want to hear from myown kids. But some of which are justtypical words that elementary or middleschool kids use like ‘morons,’ ‘booger’and ‘farted’ – though not on the schoolspelling lists. I used such words to makeGreg’s voice sound authentic. Greg isn’tperfect and kids know that and I thinkthat’s why they like him,” Kinney finallynotes.

“WHO among the presidential candidatesis ‘(wo)man enough’ to stand up for repro-ductive rights?”

This is the question posed today byAkbayan party-list Representative WaldenBello to all the contenders for the 2010 presi-dential elections in the midst of a growingdebate concerning House Bill 5043 otherwiseknown as the Reproductive Rights bill.

Bello said the opposition’s political som-ersault as well as the softening of some presi-dential aspirants’ stand on the controversial

bill is disheartening. He described it as“un(wo)man-like” and a “big setback for anation aspiring for the advancement of plat-form-based politics this coming election.”

“While I strongly oppose male chauvin-ism especially as this important bill is beingtenaciously resisted by those that benefit frompatriarchy, fantastic fallacies and archaicbeliefs, I think it is justified, even politicallycorrect to say that those who turned tail, op-pose or have vague stands on the RH bill arebeing unmanly or unwomanly,” Bello said.

Our Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadPhilip Pullman is a gifted writer of fantasy books.

His Dark Materials trilogy includes The Golden Com-pass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass andis very popular among young readers. But below thesurface of these sympathetic characters and compel-ling subplots is a sinister purpose. The story culmi-nates in a great war against God.

In these books, Pullman views the fall of Satan asa righteous cause for personal independence from God’s“tyrannical” control. He implies that Satan’s attemptto usurp the throne of God was the right thing to do!

In the book of Revelation, we read of the endtimes:“War broke out in heaven . . . . [And Satan] was castto the earth” (Rev. 12:7-9). That future war is beingpreceded by an earthly conflict on the battlefield ofour minds.

We must recognize Satan for what he is—a liar(John 8:44). His strategy is to take God’s words outof context and twist them into falsehood (Gen. 3:1-7). Our best defense against him is to hold firmly tothe truth of God’s Word (Eph. 6:10-18).

Our loving heavenly Father is “not willing thatany should perish” (2 Peter 3:9). But neither will Heforce our obedience. He leaves the choice to us. —Dennis Fisher

But just the same showbiz’s loss is politics’ gain.

PBL promises explosivegames starting February 16

THE Philippine Basketball League (PBL) enters its new seasonon February 16 with eight competitive teams and a promise that thecountry’s oldest amateur league is here to stay.

Commissioner Chino Trinidad said this during Tuesday’s PSAForum at Shakey’s UN Avenue as he aired confidence that the com-ing tournament, known as the PG Flex-UK Derm Open Conference, will be as good and exciting as the previous tournaments.

The PBL faced a very difficult challenge last year with old teamstaking a leave of absence due to various reasons.

But Trinidad said it only opened the doors to other commercialand school-based teams that have long wanted in.

”The BL has always weathered any crisis that came its way. Aslong as you see people who want to fuel the league, then the tradi-tion continues,” said Trinidad, who’s in his 10th year as commis-sioner.
