Course description

This Tour will cover:• The different species and forms of

rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias in cultivation locally, nationally and globally.

• Growing conditions: the how, what, when and why of getting it right.

• The plants’ history, botanical classification and the conservation importance of several threatened species.

• Field study of the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden’s renowned collections.

Special requirements

The session will involve practical activities so appropriate footwear (closed shoes, no sandals) Plant material cannot be brought to the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden Nursery as it may harbour soil and plant pathogens which could contaminate the nursery and gardens living collection.

Robert Hatcher

Rob has worked in the horticultural industry for over 30 years. Currenlty he is Horticultural Supervisor at the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, overseeing the internationally renowned Rhododendron collection. During his time at the Gardens he has also been responsible for the curation of the Camillia and Magnolia collections. Rhododendrons have been a passion for Rob since being introduced formally to the genus in the early 1980s. His extensive knowledge of Rhododendrons has been acquired over decades of curation and research. He has held office as the State and National President of the Australian Rhododendron Society, has been an active member of the Rhododendrons Species Foundation since 2008 and has presented papers at two International Rhododendron Conventions.
